Summary: 1) LIVER GLYCOGEN STRUCTURE. Mentionable is the finding
that the glycogen particle exhibits three tiers of branching i.e. during
the growth of a particle branching commences three times until final size
iz reached. 2) GLYCOGEN IN BLOOD. After having assayed glycogen content in
whole blood in diabetics of different types and sexes, pregnant women,
newborns and control subjects (N=330) the erythrocyte glycogen content was
measured in the same populations. Erythrocyte glycogen shares with 8-20%
in the whole blood glycogen. First series of the glycogen assay in
platelets have been carried out.
Keywords: Glycogen structure, average chain length, mechanism of growth of glycogen particle; Blood glycogen, erythrocyte glycogen in diabetes, pregnancy and in neonates.
Research goals: 1) It is intended to better elucidate the mechanism
of growth of glycogen particles during their growth from primer to the
final size of the particle. Study of particles of the increasing size
should give useful data (as the way of approach) in judging what actually
proceeds during the particle's growth. Labelled precursors could help here
too. 2) The distribution of glycogen
among blood cells is still not known. It is to be assayed for to know the
share of glycogen in erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets in the whole
blood of control subjects and those populations with impaired or loaded
carbohydrate metabolism (diabetes, pregnancy, newborns, glycogenoses).
