Summary: This paper gives an estimate of possible impacts of climaticchanges on the socio-economic structures and acticities, and onthe distribution and the dynamics of population in Mediterraneancoastal areas. Special attention has been given to humansettlements and major activities (agriculture, forestry, industry, energy, tourism, transportation, fisheries, andaquaculture) and to the possible implications of climatic changeson them. Furthermore, where the available data permit, the studygoes into greater detail with the coastline and the coastalbeltof the region (the areas influenced by the Mediterranean climateor influencing the Mediterranean environment).

Summary: In summer 1992 unusually low sea water temperature were recorded from both the coastal and open sea along the eastern Adriatic coast. In Kaštela Bay bottom temperatures were more than 1 degree C lower than average of 42 year monthly measurements. In cintrast surface temperatures were unusually high (cca. 26 degree C). This situation was presumed to be consequence of the absence of wind throught summer, and the lack of mixing. For the first time in 12 years a red tide bloom of L. polyedra did not occur. This may be related to the exceptionally low bottom temperature limiting the excystement of resting cysta of L. polyedra. A. minutum occured in bloom proportions in 1992 instead of L. polyedra. This A. minutum bloom lasted for about a week as distinct from L. polyedra bloom which have persisted for three months.

Summary: The paper presents the possibility of using methods ofmulticriterional analysis for estimating and ranking pollution incertain urban and suburban zones and along the coast, based onmonityoring air and sea quality. Certain parameters which definethe environmental characteristics are treated as criteria to beused for tghe estimating and ranking by by applaing a group ofPROMETHEE methods. In order to get a complete insight into the"behaviour" of the pollution parameters, a pŠrogramme packageGAIA (Geometrical Analysis for Interactive Aid) is used, whichenables the geometrical presentation of criteria and makes avisual display oc clustering and "two dimensional behaviour" ofpollution parameters. Direct interpretation of of the degree ofpollution on the geographical maps whics is realised by usinpcArc/Info software, makes possible on-line use of this systemfor the needs of the city authorities so that decisions on wetheror not to ban swimming or reduce ceratin industrial activity canbe made.

Summary: Spatial distribution of faecal pollution indicators and the levelof pollution in the Kastela Bay were studied under differentmeteorological conditions typical for this area: sirocco (SE),bora (NE) and maestral (SW) winds and calm. Spatial distribution of faecal pollution indicators in the Baypoints to the essential differences in spreading of waste watersfrom main pollution source (eastern bay part) under each ofstudied meteorological situation. The situation with maestral wasfound to be most favourable from the viewpoint of microbialpollution since the waste waters do not spread from the easternbay part. During bora the concn. of faecal pollution indicatorsis reduced in the eastern part being uniformly distributed allalong the northern coast of the bay. Their concn. is alsoconsiderably increased along SW coast. During sirocco the valuesof faecal pollution indicators are rather high all along thenorthern bay coast and very low along the SW coast. During calmthe level of pollution is particularly high in the wider area ofthe eastern part of the bay.

Summary: Year-to-year fluctuation in the abundance of zooplankton andbacteria were examined. Thre main patterns of year-to-yearchanges in abundance were extracted by Principal ComponentAnalysis: (1) Cyclical oscillations with 5.5 yr periodicity. Thispattern is well correlated with salinity and southerly weathertype (lower atmospheric pressure, south-easterly wind and higherprecipitation) and can be accounted for by the water exchangebetween the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea. (2) Long-termtrend of increasing abundance presumably due to the openAdriatric eutrophication. (3) Oscillations with 7.3 yrperiodicity. This pattern is well correlated with temperature.

Summary: The vertical flux of mercury to sediments in the vicinity of thechlor-alkaline electrolyse plant was measured by sediment trapsin spring and autumn 1986. The differences in mercury fluxbetween spring and autumn were significant. Depending on thedistance from the coast (10-500 m), the flux was 500-50ugHg/m2dand 1800-150ug/m2d, in spring and autumn, respectively. Total mercury concentrations in sea water were, depending on thedistance from the coast, 330-40ugHg/m3 for the spring measurementand 380-180ug/m3 for the autumn measurement. Assuming ahomogeneous distribution of Hg in the water column overlaying thebottom and first order kinetics of mercury removal by settlingparticles, the average mercury residence time in water wascalculated to be about 20 days.

Summary: Trace metals (cadmium, chromium, lead and manganese) and organicmatter content were determined in sediment samples taken in theGruz Bay. Organic matter content was very high, ranging from 8 to28%, in all parts of the bay. The highest level was recorded inthe vicinity of municipal and industrial sewage outfalls. spatial distribution of cadmium and lead significantly varied. The highest values vere recorded in the inner part of the bay. Since the effects of organic matter on metal contents has beenproved, the relationship between organic matter content andindividual metals has been determined.

Summary: Under the conditions of persistent and substantial input ofnutrients and organic matter of antropogenic origin to asemi-enclosed middle Adriatic basin (Kastela Bay), summer redtide with the dominance of the species Lingulodinium polyedra(Stein) comb.nov., has become quite ordinary phenomenon in itsmost hevily loaded part. An analysis of hydrographic, chemical and biological parametersrecorded at four stations during monitoring in 1989 shows surfacetemperature to be of great importance controlling bloomintensity. Their correlation could be described by anexponentyial equation applicable to all studied stations. Of nutrients, nitrate was important bloom factor in the vicinityof input sources, whereas no correlation could be established atthe most offshore station.

Summary: The paper analyses the selectivity of the basic formula of the method harmonic analysis of the tides considering the length of the sea-level time-series. It is demonstrated that the method for sufficiently long time-series eliminmates the error resulting from sea-air interaction. In the discussion the sufficient condition is given to consider a stochastic signal resulting from sea-air interaction as a continuous stochastic process in the sea -level time-series.

Summary: The earliest closure model for hydrodynamic equations is that proposed by Prandtl (1925). Modern theory of turbulence has demonstrated that this equation can be obtained from a balance of shear production, buoyancy production and dissipation in the turbulent energy equation. These results are reviewed and discussed. Some peculiarities when applying the results ob observations from the atmospheric boundry layer to the sea are discussed.

Summary: It is well known that the main periods of the Adriatic seiche are 21, 11, 8, 6... h. The seiche of 8 and 6 h periods Vercelli identified as free oscillations of the Adriatic considering it as the closed basin. The analysis of the modelling results and of the sea level data for Koper, Split and Dubrovnik showed that the seiches of 8 and 6 h periods are seiches of the Adriatic shelf.

Summary: Study of bactertial biomass and production as well as of the relationship between bacteriplankton biomass and total nicrobial biomass were carried out in the coastal and open middle Adriatic on a monthly basis from January 1980 to September 1982. Bacterioplankton biomass values in the open sea were twice lower than the values in the Bay. The proportion of bactetrioplankton biomass in total microbial biomass is significant, on the average 14.7 % in Kaštela bay and twice that in the open sea. The peak bacteriplankton production was recorded from both study areas in summer. The ratio of bacteriplalnkton production in Kaštela bay to that in the open sea was 1.3 in winter to 6.3 in summer.

Summary: Biomass and production of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF), as well as grazing on bacteria were measured seasonally in Kaštela bay (Adriatic Sea). Strong seasonality ofall studied parametrs was established with maximum values obtained during the warmer summer-autumn period. In that period bacteria showed a twofold higher production while HNF showed a threefold higher biomass and ninefold higher production then during colder winter-spring period. Moreover, bacterial predators showed sevenfold higher grazing on bacteria in warmer period. During the summer-autumn period bacterial carbon daily flux through predator organisms was highre than bacterial biomass pool, while in the colder period bacterial daily flux accounted only 8 % of presented biomass pool. These results suggests that during the summer-autumn period in Kaštela Bay, nbacteria could be an important link between primary production and higher trophic levels.

Summary: The coastal area of Split is under continuous impact of faecal pollution due to inappropriate sewage effluents deposition. Pollution effects on the bacteriological quality of Mytillus galloprovincialis was studied at nine stations in the coastal area of Split through the period 1984-93. Recorded number of faecal coliforms in mussels was well correlated with the pollution ofmarine environment. Their numbers exceed maximum permissible limit, frequently reaching extremely high values, throughout the studied area. This point to the fact that consumption of mussels from the Splizt area may cause serious risks from human health from the hygienic-epidemological point of wiev.

Summary: Correlation between bacterial and HNF abundance was not established across the year, probably as a result of predator-prey oscillations, and complex interractions with numerous feedbacks. The ratio between bacterial and HNF abundance ranged between 148 and 5225 with mean value of 1568, or expressedas carbon biomass ratio the mean value was 4.1. Both bacterial and HNF production were in maximum during summer and therefore, high correlation between them was established pointing at strong trophic relationship between these two groups of organisms. Expressed as carbon biomass HNF production accounted on average 39 % of bacterial production.

Summary: The Kastela Bay is well known as one of the most threatened areaon the eastern Adriatic coast. This is the results of diffrenetactivities planned and organized regardless of thecharacteristics of this environment. The increased level ofvarious human activities, as well increase of waste volumedischarged into the Bay result in increased competition betweenactivities for limited space; often in undesired effects on themarine ecosystems, with corresponding adverse effects on humansand human activities. The project on management of the Kastala Bay Area has to defineof optimum utilization of this environment on the basis ofscientific methods, as well as to propose the measures for itsrealization, taking the environment as a fundamental element ofdevelopment.

Summary: Northern Adriatic has characteristics of typical adjacent sea. It is shallow basin markedly affected by strong runoffs of fresh water the Po and other rivers. All these conditions have been considered to estimate possible pollution. To estimate the level of pollution of the sea water, marine organisms and sediments by organic pollutants, contents of dissolved organic matter and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were analysed in the sea water, while the contents of aromatic and polyaromatic hydrocarbons and clorinated hydrocarbon derivatives were determined in sediment and marine organisms. All introduced pollutants could be transported through the pelagic links by the organic matter and so all the levels in the ecosystem have benn considered.

Summary: cadmium and lead uptake from the fish food in liver and muscle tissue of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were investigated experimentally. The conditions as close as possible to rthose in natural environment were ensured by this experiment. The se bass was exposed to elevated concentrations of Cd and Pb. In fish exposed to eleveted concentrations, a linear metal concentration increase (in liver and muscle tissue) was established during the experiment. However, liver and muscle tissue respond differently during metal uptake. Athough at the end of the experiment Cd concentraton was much higer in the liver of exposed fish, bioaccumulation in the muscle tissue was faster. Quite an opposite trend was recorded for lead bioaccumulation. The results of this experiment confirmed thast the liver, as a central organ of metabolic process, may be a measure of an actual Cd and Pb load of an organism.

Summary: The aim ot the work was to determine whether there is an interaction between red tide organism and temperature, nutriebts, pH and oxygen saturation. The results shows that the nutrient concc. in Kaštela bay is sufficient and do not represent a limiting factor in the red tide development. It was found that the initiation and termination of red tide blooms in the bay depend on the sea water temperature. The red tide increases when the water temperature reaches about 20 degree C. Temporary and resting cysts of L. polyedra play an important role in the persistence and recurrence of red tide blooms in the bay.

Summary: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the bioaccumulatioinrate of cadmium and lead from the sea water in mussel gils, feetand the remainder of soft tissue. In addition, it was attempt tofind out the extent of influence of food, loaded by these metals,on their bioaccumulation by liver a muscles of sea bass undercage culture. It was experimentally established that therelationship between Cd mass fraction in mussel tissue and Cdmass fraction in the sea water is almost linear, whereas anincrease in Pb mass fraction in mussel tissue was notproportional to the increase of that fraction in the surroundingwater. Mussel gills showed the highest mass fraction of metals, soft tissue had slightly lower concentrations and foot thelowest. The rate of Cd and Pb bioaccumulation (by all musseltissue parts) was reduced with the age of mussels. Cd was foundto be more readily accumulated by mussels than Pb. Sea bas analyzed prior to the experiment showed that liver Cdaccumulation was 14.7 and that of Pb only 1.3 times that of themuscle tissue. In sea bass exposed to elevated mass fractions ofthe metals in the fish food, a linear increase of Cd massfractions in liver and muscle tissue was established during theexperiment. Liver, in particular, responded to the lovest Cd anPb mass fractions in the fish food. Fish exposed to elevated massfractions of Cd and Pb in fish food, accumulated larger massfractions of these metals during the experiment. Compared to thecontrols, relatively more Cd was accumulated by muscle tissuethan by liver. Quite an opposite trend was recorded for Pbbioaccumulation.

Summary: Mass mercury proportion is 0.8 mg/kg in the sediment at trhe bayinlet and 10.5 mg/kg in front of the chlor-alkaly electrolyseplant. Mean mass total mercury concn. in te sea water is 21 ng/lin the middle of thee bay and 51 ng/l in front of the plant. Thecoeficient of mercury distribution between suspended particlesand mercury dissolved in the sea water was obtained to be3.72xl0exp4 l/kg. Mean residance time in the sea water is 20 day due to particlesedimentation. The total ressidence time in the sea water of thebay is 12 days due to particle sedimentation and water transportout of the bay. As calculated by a mathematical model, at masss mercury input of3 kg/day for 35 years, mercury mass deposited in trhe sediment ofthe bay amounts to 5.9 tonns. This figure confirms to the figureof 5.4 tonns obtained by measurements. Upon cease of mercuryemission after 1990, model forecasted that about 1.3 tonns ofmercury would still be there in 2000 which means that the averagemass mercvry proportion would not exceed o.5 m/kg of drysediment.

Summary: The role of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates in themicrobial food chain was studied in Kastela bay during 1992/93.The seasonal, daily and vertical distribution of studiedparameters was analyzed. Bacterial production was determinedsimultaneously with two methods: (1) bacterial growth in apredator-free environment and (2) incorporation of tritium-markerThymidine, while grazing was obtained applying three methods: twomentioned before, and (3) radioactively labelled bacteria. The average biomass and production of bacteria and heterotrophicnanoflagellates suggest that these organisms fix a significantamount of organic carbon, and they potentially are an importantsource of organic carbon for higher tropic levels in the pelagicfood chain. This biomass production show a marked seasonaloscillations with maximum values during a warmer part of theyear. The strong trophic coupling of bacteria with heterotrophicnanoflagellates, and heterotrophic flagellates with ciliates wasestablished.

Summary: Sediment samples taken at six station in the Kastela bay weredivided into layers (5 cm deep) and fractionated by sievingtechnique. The following sediment fractions were obtained:>300um, 54-300um, 20-54um, and <20um. Organic matter and trace metals(manganese, chromium, lead, and cadmium) were determined in thesediment fractions, as well as in the unsieved sediment samples. Sediment samples taken nearby industrial zone generally showedthe highest organic matter and trace metals. Metal concentrationin the sediment is far less affected by fractiuon content than byorganic matter content. In all sediments layers, trace metalsconcentrations significantly increase with increase of organicmatter, particulary in the fine-grained fraction (< 20um). Thishas been confirmed by the values of correlation coefficients, andtheir significance. Organic matter content affects moresignificantly lead and chromium concentrations than cadmium andmanganese concentrations. High content of organic matter was found in surface sediment, andin the fine-grained fractions of all sediment layers. Thedistribution of lead and chromium in diffrenet grain-sizefractions shows that they are significantly associated withsmallere size particles, whereas manganese, and particularycadmium, do not show such distribution.

Summary: The aim of this work was to study possibility of using musselMytilus galloprovincialis foot, gills, and the rest of the softtissue as quantitative bio-indicators of cadmium and leadpollution of the marine environments. Three age groups of mussels were exposed to the eleveted Cd andPb concentrations in experimental basins for seven days. Asignificant increase of Cd and Pb in the foot, gills and therest of soft tissue was observed as of function of the exposuretime (particularly in younger age groups). It was found that Cdand Pb concentration are highely dependent on gills weight. Therefore, the gill of mussels is not suitable organ to be usedas bio-indicator. The same can be applied for the rest of softmussel tissue, becouse of well known effect of reproductive cycleon the metal level in the tissue. Cointrary, mussel foot issuitable as bio-indicator of metals pollution of the marineenvironment. Daily Cd and Pb uptake rate by mussel foot is linearly dependenton these metals concentration in the surrounding medium.

Summary: According to the climate change scenario for the Kastela Bayregion the expected temperature change is close to the globalvalue in all seasons. In winter and spring the prediced changewill be slightly below the global mean. In summer an autumn thechange is likely to be slightly greater than this, but not morethan 1 degree C per degree of global change. These scenarious suggest that precipitation will show an increasein all seasons except autumn. Assessments of the possible imapcts of expected climatic changeswere made on the basis of the existing state of knowledgeconcerning the characteristics of each domain, ecosystem or humanactivity. There are many uncertainties in the predictinsparticularly in the case of imapcts or natural ecosystems. Therefore, the possible impacts imapcts are describedqualitatively and, wherever possible, quantitatively. Actions toaddress the major expected impacts are proposed.
