Summary: Poceses that may have influence on exchange of matter in semi-enclosed bays were studied in the Kaštela bay and Split and Brač Channel. Special attention was given to the exchange of the nutrients between sediments and bottom waters. The microbial food chain and its role in transport of energy and matter to the higher trophic layer, as well as its contribution to total production of the studied ecosystem was studied too. Using the developed hydrodinamic numerical model temporal variability of currents field in the studied area was determined. Distribution of some heavy metals in sediments of the Bay was determined, as well as in some marine organisms.
