Summary: Bacterioplankton was investigated at three coastal station
insouthern Adriatic (The Mali Ston Bay, the Gruž Bay and openwaters)
throughout 1988 and 1989.
Bacterioplankton population density in the southern Adriatic wasfor the
first time determined by direct epifluorescent method.Maximum
bacterioplankton population density was recorded inMarch. Increased values
were most frequently recorded in thesurface and near the bottom layers.
Mean annual ratio betweenbacterioplankton population densities at the
station investigated(Gruž : Usko : P-100 = 3.2 : 1.6 : 1) indicates
differenteutrophication levels. Free bacteria dominated inbacterioplankton.
The number of attached bacterial cellsincreased with depth and quantity of
detritus. Highestbacterioplankton volume biomass was recorded in March and
theincreased values in September. Mean annual phytoplankton volumewas 1.7
times that of the mean annual bacterioplankton volume, mean annual
bacterioplankton carbon biomass was 8.3 times that ofthe phytoplankton.

Summary: In the Adriatic during four cruises of the RV "A.
Mohorovičić" nine chaetoghath species were found. Species Sagitta minima,
S. inflata and S. setosa were present troughout the Adriatic, while S.
neodecipies. S. lyra, S. serratodentata, S.bipunctata, S. hexaptera and
Krohnitta subtilis were found only in the central and southern Adriatic.
The majority of the Sagitta minima, S. inflata and S. setosa population was
dwelling at the surface layer down to the 50 m depth. An oceanic species,
S. serratodentata was registred down to the 100 m depth, while remaining
species, S. neodecipiens, S. lyra and Krohnitta subtilis down to the 1000 m
depth. High chaetognaths biomass were determined in autumn. Species S.
inflata, S. lyra and S. minima contributed most to the biomass.

Summary: The Adriatic epipelagic mesozooplankton was investigated
during four seasonal cruises during 1989/90. The samples were collected
with a 53 um mesh netting Nansen net, by vertical tows from the botoom to
the surface in the northern Adriatic, and from 50-0 m and 100-50 m in the
middle and south Adriatic.
The qualitative and qualitaitve composition of the net zooplankton was
analysed. Microfraction (> 53 um) and mesofraction (> 200 um) of the most
important copepods were compared.
The highest total zooplankton values were noted at stations nearer the
western-istrian coast in August 1989 with maximum of 21849 ind. m-3 at
station 2. The total zooplankton densities decreased from northern to
southern Adriatic, and from coastal to open sea waters.
Copepods dominated zooplankton. Cladocerans were numerous in the northern
Adriatic during summer.
Of 57 copepod species identified, of which 45 were calanoids, 4
harpacticoids, and 4 cyclopoids, quantitatively the most important were 19
species.
The less frequent calanoid copepods were not found in relation to previous
investigations. The comparison between microfraction and mesofraction of
four quantitatively most important copepod groups and species showed that
the bulk of calanoid copepodid stages and adult cyclopoids passed through
the 200 um net. In order to obtain more precise assessment of zooplankton
density, the combination of sampling methods using 53 and 200 um plankton
nets with some other available methods is recommended.
