Summary: Further specialized research has been carried out into the taxonomy and ecology of certain zooplankton groups such as Tintininna, Radiolaria, Cyclopoida, Chaetognatha, Calycophora, together with the study of distribution of biomass in the Southern Adriatic and the Otranto Strait based on the samples collected on cruises of R/V "Andrija Mohorovičić" from 1973-1990. The analysis of the ecological study in the Bay of Gruž has been completed after several years, while the work on the previous complex research performed in the Bay of Mali Ston and the Sea Lakes of Mljet is under way. Test research of the efficiency of the "Adriatic" sampler has been started. Four cruises were undertaken during 1992. (April, June, September, November) by R/V "Bios" at nine stations in the north-eastern part of the Southern Adriatic Pit. For the first time all plankton groups of the deep-sea profile in the Southern Adriatic Pit have been included in the research conducted through contemporary methods, which is very significant in determining of ecological processes in plankton community of this region.

Keywords: Zooplankton, microzooplankton, mesozooplankton, phytoplankton, bacterioplankton, distribution, taxonomy, biomass, nutrients, Adriatic Sea.

Research goals: Studies of biogeochemical processes of pelagic of seas and oceans which have been intensified recently require good knowledge of microdistribution of all planktonic organisms. The basic problem occurs in the manner of taking the representative sample for certain zooplanktonic community and determining its size. For that purpose, a new type of a sampler has been constructed for quantitative research of the major communities of microzooplankton in a given layer. The sampler has been described under the neame of "Adriatic" (Kršinić, 1990). This sampler gives opportunities for more detailed research into pelagic world, study of trophic relations in plankton and of the influence of physical-chemical factors influencing microdistribution of plankton. For this reason, wider testing research should be conducted under various ecological conditions to establish the efficiency of the sampler, with a view to its possible wider use. Ecological research of relations of the smallest fractions of plankton (microzooplankton - heterotrophic nanoflagellates - bacterioplankton), known as "microbioal loop" in ecological terminology, could contribute significantly to science. This issue also concerns the field of eutrophication, transport and regenerations of organic matter, which is of paramount interest in the study of ecological balance in the ecosystem of the Adriatic. Regenerative power of the growth of phytoplankton (and production relations as a whole) will be studied through regular measuring of concentration of nutrients. Complex research of plankton in the north-eastern part of the Southern Adriatic Pit is to be undertaken, in order to determine the influence of the deep Southern Adriatic on processes in the Middle and Northern part of the Adriatic. The research presents an contribution to the understanding of the structure and function of the Adriatic Sea and the basis for the future protection.
