Summary: European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) and Mediterranean mussel(Mytilus galloprovincialis) have been cultivated for many yearsalong the coast of Croatia. About 16 additional mollusks, mainlyEuropean date mussel (Litophaga litophaga), Noah's ark (Arcanoae), bearded horse mussel (Modiolus barbatus) and banded murex(Phyllonotus trunculus) have been gathered from natural beds forfood and other uses. Oysters and mussels were one cultivated inat least 30 sites in Croatia, but for various reasons most ofsites were abandoned. In last 30 years, Limski Bay and the Bay ofMali Ston have maintained production, and a few years ago Zadarand Šibenik were brought back into production. During the past 20years, the Mediterranean mussel followed by oyster are the onlymollusks landed in quantity.
Keywords: Mollusk, Croatia, Adriatic Sea, species, distribution, cultivation.

Summary: The rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis M) was cultured onphytoplankton monocultures(Dunaliella tertiolecta, Tetraselmissuecica,Nannochloropsis sp.; Phaeodactylum tricornutum), naturalnanoplankton and bakers yeast. Biochemical composition ofrotifers harvested at exponential, stationary and death phaseswas determined. The moisture content declined in all samples intheir stationary phase of growth. Ash levels were highest at thedeath phase. Lipids and carbohydrates were observed to declinebetween the exponential and the death phases. Protein levelsincreased in the stationary phase. Growth rate, doubling time, lipid, carbohydrate and protein content of rotifers fedPhaeodactylum tricornutum and Nannochloropsis sp. indicate thatthese monocultures are the most suitable diets for the rotifer.Rotifers fed on these algae are expected to satisfy thenutritional demand of fish larvae.
Keywords: Brachionu plicatilis, biochemical composition, feed, dietary effect.

Summary: 1. Rubidium transport and inorganic osmolyte permeabilities werestudied in isolated, perfused Carcinus gills. 2. The gill permeability coefficient calculated from theunidirectional ion fluxes in the perfused gills in dilutedseawater indentical to the bath showed more cation than anionselectivity, showing the following permeability rations P Rb:PNa:P Cl=1.7:1.0:0.2. 3. Net Rb selective fluxes (J b-a) from the haemolymph across thebasolateral and apical membrane surfaces into the beathingsolution were inhibited (51%) by basolaterally applied ouabain(0.005 M). 4. The results suggest the presence of ouabain-sensitive activeRb secreation where the mechanisms are basolaterally located. Netrubidium fluxes were not changed by externally applied 10 -4 Mamiloride.
Keywords: Ion permeability, Rubidium flux, Carcinus meneas.

Summary: The coastal Mediterranean zone is under increasing demographic, industrial and environmental pressures that risk the economic investment and living resources of its coastal nations. We are therefore faced with the challenge of developing a strategy of sustainable exploitation for the whole Mediterranean Sea, and this requires a new strategic partnership between marine scientists, managers and decision makers from all the Mediterranean countries.

Summary: The potential of the Mediterranean environments for thedevelopment of aquaculture has only recently been fullyrecognized prompting almost all the countries of the region tostart implementing or to plan substantial aquaculture activities. For the future, limits for the sites practical for culturepurposes shoulkd be extended to include not only lagoons, estuaries and sheltered coastal zones but the offshore zones too. The programme proposed is designed primarily to help thegovernments of the Mediterranean countries, but also to helpexisting and potential procedures to plan and carry outappropriate projects, avoiding risk of production collapse causedby environmental disturbances.

Summary: More than other aquaculture activities, mollusk cultures aredependant on the resources of the aquaciulture site itself, inparticular on water quality and plankton usedfor food. This meansthat the quality of the environment must provide these resourcesin appropriate amounts and quality. The maintenance of theseinitially suitable ecological conditions is a limit fordevelopment of mollusk culture. It has been recently recognizedthat too dense mollusk cultures themselves are capable toendanger both, environment and production.

Summary: The Bay of Mali Ston, 60 km NW off Dubrovnik, is naturalsetting and growing area for various mollusk species. Inaddition, oysters have been reared hara since the times of RomanEmpire and the Middle Ages. In this bay plankton is abundant, thesalinity, due to numerous submarine freshwater springs, isrelatively low, and temperatures are favourable. Among few baysalong Croatian coast in which bivalves have been reared, the Bayof Mali Ston is the most suitable. Against the fact of Serbianaggression and destruction of aquaculture instalations, todayculture of oysters and mussels are still going on and even cageculture of seabass has been introduced. There is potential forfurther development, and what is more important, the bay is stillunpolluted. Because of the expected increase of production of cultivatedshellfish and fish it is necessary to undertake research helpingwith rational development and safe production withenvironmentally sound management.
Keywords: Mariculture, shellfish, fish, coastal area, Bay of Mali Ston, Croatia.

Summary: It is a proposal project to study foraging orientation by medusae in two contrasting marine ecosystems. This issue is important because, while medusae are significant predators in marine ecosystems (often on important fish stocks), we have no understanding of the way in which they locate prey for feeding. We believe that chemical orientation during foraging may enable medusae to locate the prey.
