Summary: The knowledge on biology and ecology of economically important organisms in the southern Adriatic Sea is insufficient. It was planed to investigate distribution, reproductive potentiality, quality and applicability, as well as controlled cultivation of selected organisms in the laboratory. Combined research in the field and laboratory comprise comparison of ecological parameters, development of organisms and their dependence on specific ecological conditions in the coastal ecosystems. Project is in favor of farming development along the coastal region of the southern Adriatic Sea. Its result would support development of mariculture, rationale exploitation of natural sea populations and definition of natural protection criteria for rationale management of biological resources.

Research goals: Demersal and benthic organisms in the coastal marine ecosystem are principal biological resources for rational valorization of the related economy. Economically important organisms in the southern Adriatic are only two mollusk species, a few fish species, one crustacean and red corral. Goal of the project is to define biological and ecological characteristics of oysters, mussels, seabass, grouper and red corral, as well as to define their biological potentiality for future exploitation either in mariculture or in fishery. Furthermore, the goal is to improve cultivating methodology of nutritive species and species in mariculture projects. Also, the goal is to develop methodology for rationale exploitation of coastal ecosystems assigned for mariculture development, as well as to propose introduction of new species. Principal expected results are: - definition of time and space distribution and optimum settling of oyster and mussel spat in the Bay of Mali ston, - selection of appropriate species for laboratory cultivation and improvement of cultivation methods, - description of distribution of red corral in the southern Adriatic, - definition of species composition and spatial distribution of mussel populations along Croatian coast of the Adriatic Sea, - definition of optimal temperature span in laboratory cultivation and the use of temperature shock in cultivation of nutritive species for larval fish development, - establishment of methodology for introduction of cryobiology in mariculture process, - establishment of methodology for rationale use of coastal ecosystem for development of mariculture and related trophic capacity, - description of mollusk species along eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea.
