Summary: In oder to investigate the role microphytes in the process
oftuff deposition in the Plitvice National Park area,qualitativeand
quantitative analyses of perifiton were carried out.
in oder to asses the role of periphyton in carbonate depositionof the
PlitviceLakes system, we have (1)conducted a series ofexposure experiments
testing the interdependence betweencarbonate deposition and periphyton
growth, and correlating thequalitative and quantitative composition of
periphyton withcarbonate accumulation, (2) recorded the seasonaly of
periphytonsettelment, and the successional changes in the composition,
and(3) correlated the results with physico-chemical properties ofthe water
on the habitats studies.
The relationship between carbonate deposition and periphyton wastested by
exposure experiments (microscope slides). Glass slideswere submerged in
stream water (exposed 30,60,90 and 365days) for 7 localities along Plitvice
lakes. The investigationwere carried out from spring 1985 to spring 1990.
An intense encrustation of thalli with microcristaline calcitewas foun in
foolowing genera of Cyanophyceae (Chamaesiphon,Homoeothrix and Hydrococcus)
andBacillariophyceae(Achnanthes,Synedra, Cymbrlla and Gomphonema).
The obtained results indicate the complex interaction of severalfactors
responsible for tufa formation. in additional tophysico-chemical and
geological factors, the qualitativecomposition and density of microphyte
community seems to be ofmajor importance in the process of calcite
precipitation.
