Summary: The top layer of the mud (sediment) in lakes and rivers have a high content of organic nutriens and, therefore colonized by a very large number of microorganisms. Due to microbial activity the organic matter are broken down and gradually diminishes. In the sediments of eutrophic water microbial activity in the degradation of organic matter leads to the formation of anaerobic zones, where denitrification and desulphurication occur. The main source of the degradable organic matter in sediments are planktonic copmmunities, where the phytoplancton play an important role. T eutrofication and degradation of the lakes depend on the organic contens of sediment and microbiological activity on the bottom. Sediment is the main ecological niche in all inland waters.

Research goals: To detect the remineralization of organic substance of autohtonus origin (phytoplankton) in some lakes in Croatia, with particular attention on the bacteria-producers of hydrogen sulhide from proteins and sulphates. The observe and compare the microbiological contens of the sediment, and the trophic grade of the lake. Thermophilic bacteria in sediment as as the indicators of the anthropogenic influence (manure).
