Summary: Thirty-six beech stands located in Croatia have been
analysedusing 6 polymorphic enzymatic loci. Three of them (PX-1,
PX-2,GOT-1) seem to be more or less influenced by selection sincetheir
allelic frequencies are related to climatic conditions. Thetotal gene
diversity is higher for only 1 out of 6 loci in thecontinental region.
Discriminant analyses on allelic frequenciesshow that in Mediterranean
Seslerio-Fagetum which grows in ratherdry conditions, is an association
apart; and a significantdifference exists between 2 groups of Mediterranean
beechwoodslocated in the highlands and on the plain, respectively. Ageneral
tendency towards a heterozygotic deficit occurs with thesame significance
in both regions. Multilocus F-statistics revealthat the total genotypic
differentiation and its 2components(intra- and interpopulations) do not
differ between the2 regions.

Summary: The extaracts of the root and leaves of P. kitaibeliana
Schottwere analysed in comparison with the official drug Primulaeradix. It
was revealed that the root of P. kitaibeliana had aboutfour times stronger
hemolytic activity than Primulae radix. Twomain saponins that correspond
chromatographically to those ofPrimulae radix were isolated from the P.
kitaibeliana rootextract. Upon hydrolysis a mixture of aglycones was
obtained. Oneof the sapogenins corresponded to the reference
substanceprimulagenine A. Using tlc and authentic substances,
glucose,galactose, rhamnose and glucoronic acid were identified in thesugar
residue of the less polar saponin, while the second saponinposseses also
xylose in the sugar chain.

Summary: Studiing the evergreen plant cover of the Lošinj
archipelago, itwas established that special characteristics were given to
it bythe presence of a certain number of types characteristic to
thedeciduous thermophilous vegetation. The presence of deciduouselements in
the evergreen vegetation shows that the evergreenvegetation is at its
northern border. The fact is evident in thefloral and vegetation
composition, especially evident with each,even minimal change of relief. It
is exactly these facts thathave made us draw the northern border of the
zonal range of theholm-oak forest in the Adriatic region. The fact that
theholm-oak and macchia belt goes further north from the belt -coast of
Istria- is conditioned, in our opinion, by thegeomorphological conditions
and not by climate in general.

Summary: Phytosociological research conducted on the grassland and
forestvegetation of the island of Brioni showed that the intensivegrazing,
trampling and dropping of dung throughout the year dueto overstocking of
the game per a surface unit - about 10 head ona hectare instead of 1.5 -
caused important changes in the floralcomposition of the grasslands. Due to
anthropization, theoriginal vegetation has been replaced by various forms
of theruderal vegetation. The excessive grazing, trampling and droppingof
dung have brought about changes not only into the floralcomposition but
also in the proportion between particular plantgroups which are
characteristic of the settled grassland thatdevaluate it from the
agronomical point of view. It issignificant that some changes which are
pronounced in the floralcomposition can also be noticed in the soil as
indicated by somesoil analysis that show a higher total nitrogen content in
thesoil.

Summary: For the islands along the Western coast of Isrtia it has
been found that there bz the degradation of jasmine forests a special tzpe
of a dense and impassable 1 to 7 meters high macchia is developed in whoch
Rhamnus alaternus, Pistacia lentiscus and Phillzrea latifolia s.l.
dominate. There, however, the jasmine and a certain number of spesies which
normally accompanz it are missing, so these stands are detache as a
separate association Pistacio-Rhamnetum alaterni. This association belongs
in the alliance Quercion ilicis because by its floristic composition it
differs significantly from the asociations of the alliances of the order
Pistacio-Rhamnetalia.
