Summary: A vegetation map is a work that shows the plant world of a
specific area, following precise principles of geobotanical science. The
mapping procedure is based on approaching the plant world from the
standpoint of its unity in plant communities that are the reflection of
paterns that rule in specific phytogeographical areas. Vegetational mapping
of these communities, that are made up of specific forest types, meadows,
pastures, rocky ground, reeds, agricultural land, etc., shows most visibly
the synthesis of vegetation research - vegetation maps. The vegetation map
is directly used as a base for regional planning, road building, medicine,
etc., or indirectly for making of different thematic maps that are deduced
from the map of real vegetation.
Keywords: Vegetation map, real vegetation, Croatia
Research goals: The objective and purpose of a vegetation map is to
show the plant cover on the principle of plant communities. In other words
to determine the vegetation at every point of a certain plant area,
determine the phytosociological and ecological features, and systemic
association of every single plant or a group that forms a separate plant
unit, and show these elements on a vegetation map. It is necessary to
undergo both phytosociological and phytogeographical research, to be able
to map out the vegetation. This means that it is necessary to record the
state of the vegetation at the moment of research and mapping process. The
result of such work is a map of the real vegetation, where the flora
manifests itself as a specific grassland, underbush or forest as a final
phase of development of the plant world of our climate. Showing in such a
manner a specific vegetation unit on a wider scale, and establishing the
area of its range, one can, at the same time establish the belts where some
vegetation and climatic conditions prevail; the so called isopotential
zones which are of special significance in the application of vegetation
maps. When we look at the vegetation map from this point of view, then its
aim is clearer to us; to show the vegetation at every point
phytosociologically, ecologically, phytogeographically, to make apparent
its static and dynamic components, development tendencies of the
vegetation, to show the scope of influence of anthropozoogenic factors, but
at the same time show the potential of every point. In the framework of
mapping, this is the fundamental purpose of a vegetation map. A map can
fulfill this task only if it is done through fundamental research.
