Summary: In the area of a part of Vinodol and Gorski Kotar the analysis ofthe disposition of the longitudinal, normal and reverse faultswas accomplished. Certain regularities were noticed in thedisposition of the faults, and the areas with the domination ofthe faults of definite character were separated. The areas withthe dominant normal faulting, i.e. tectonic subsidence, weretreated as the probable zones of crustal underthrusting. On the basis of comparison to the microstructures on thegeometrized geological cross-sections the construction of theforms and depths of the "main" and joint crustal underthrustingzones were accomplished.

Summary: The paper presents the stratigraphy of Paleogene strata from thecentral part carbonate Dinarides. The carbonate and the clasticrock units were studied. Their contact with underlying Senonianlimestone is marked by unconformity as a result of Laramiantectonic phase. The unconformity is denoted by the abundance ofbauxite deposits. The abundance of calcareous nanoplancton species as well asbentic foraminifera points at the sedimentation of Paleogenestrata during the Eocene period. The succession of sediments witheasily recognizeable transgressive, inundation and regressivefeatures has been established. Lithostratigraphical characteristics enabled the distinguishin oflarger lithofacies groups. The simultaneousness of carbonaterocks with lower part of clastic succession as well as thetransitional lithofacies have been approved. The simultaneousoverburden of bauxite deposits regardless of its lithology(carbonate or clastic) speaks in favour of the unitebauxitebearing phase.

Summary: The exploration of bauxite deposits in the region of thecarbonaceous Dinarides has been performed by using differentgeological and geophysical methods. Deposits laying shallower ordeeper below the roof sediments have so far most often beendiscovered by expensive drilling methods in a corresponding grid.Complex geological explorations have led to a series of valuabledata thus enabling the application other much more economicalmethods as well. In the region of the bauxite sedimentary basinMesihovina - Rakitno, western Herzegovina, at the site of StudenaVrila - after extensive geological explorations - a conclusionwas drawn that the shallow seismic reflection geophysical methodas well might be successfully applied in locationg new bauxitedeposits. In the paper, the geological framework of the bauxitedeposits occurrances, stipulating the selection of this methode, will be presented. Measurements were performed on a known deposit(L-84, Povaljenica), completely defined by exploration drilling. The obtained results justify the selection of the shallow seismicreflection method as one of the methods for exploring bauxitedeposits beneath the roof beds.

Summary: The Holocene , Upper Pleistocene and Middle Pleistocene sedimentsin the eastern part of the Drava depression the substratum ofwhich is determined by the conditional EK marker Q', are composedin the lower part mainly of silts and clays and in the upper partof sands. The thickest parts are about 400m. The collected data show the quaternary tectonic activity afterthe sedimentation of the marker horizon Q'. In the area betweenthe boundary faults of the valley, the faults of the systemE.N.E.-W.S.W. (N.E.-S.W.) influenced directly the sedimentationand the folding. The horizontal component of the left wing movement is visiblealong the diagonal system of faults. The vertical movement havealso been determined. The greatest amplitudes were along theboundary South fault of the Drava valley, up to 350m for theperiod of Middle and Upper Pleistocene, or 90m for UpperPleistocene.

Summary: In the Eastern Slavonia (Croatia) there is a scarse drilled area of about 6000 square kilometers, situated to the east of the wellknown oil and gas bearing depressions. In the same area extensivegeological and geophysical exploration has been undertaken andthe results are summarized in a set of special maps such asgeological, tectonic, neotectonic, structural, andpaleogeological maps. Each of these maps is a source of one ormore attributes analyzed by an expert system based on theAssistant Professional shell. These attributes, as parts of thelearning examples were used for predicting the hydrocarbon fielddistribution on a quadratic grid. It is shown that it issufficient to prepare a set of solved decision problems, confirmed by drilled wells, and use them by the AssistantProfessional expert system shell in order to generateautomatically decision rules for drilling in an oil field.

Summary: The study of subsurface Middle Pleistocene deposits was performedusing subsurface mapping methods. These sediments consist ofunsorted gravels of lithoarenite pebbles mixed with sand andsilt. To the west of the confluence of Krapina with Sava they areunconformable upon Upper Pontian layers, filling up a furrow-likedepression in the paleorelief. These deposits form a plano-convexshaped lenticular body, produced by the transport of detritusfrom the nearby dry land areas into a shallow sweet waterenvironment. Deposition occured during the Mindel/Riss interglacial stage, andone part of the Riss glacial, before cooling and draught hadreached their peak. The swamps of the conterporaneous periglacialbelt were then drastically reduced in size or dried up. Suchconditions probably persisted until the end of Pleistocene, asthe Wurm glacial is distinguished by the coldest, driest weatherthroughout the Quaternary. A sudden thaw and tectonic movementsin the Holocene enabled intensive fluvial transport anddeposition of well graded gravels, with rounded pebbles(primarily composed of limestone), which directly covered eitherPontian or Middle Pleistocene deposits. In comparison with olderclastics, they represent a different mode of sedimentation andmore distant source for the greatest mass of detritus.

Summary: The lake of Vrana on the Cres island is the largest waterphenomenon of Adriatic islands. Clarification of the genesis andhydrodynamic model of the lake is of exceptional importance forrational protection of the lake area and for the best using ofthe lake water in the water supply of the Cres-Lošinj group ofislands. There is a dilemma about lake recharge system only fromits local catchment area, regarding partially known limnologicalcharacteristics of the lake and huge amount of fresh water whichfills depressions in karst relief. The concept based onexclusively local catchment area limits the possibility of usingthe nature resource and by that of economical development of theislands, which is without enough exact elements dangerous toelaborate.

Summary: Coal mining tradition in Istria is 180 years old. The onlyexploitable mine there is the "Tupljak" pit where there arebalanced reserves. A part of the pit is open and completelyprepared for excavation (section II). Current production amountsto 120,000 t yearly and it is planned to keep it such by 2000,after which the pit closing down is supposed. The nextexpoitation field (section III) is reached by mining activities. The possibility of exploiting these reserves as well is pointedout, what may prolong the mine life time till 2007, butjustification of these tendences needs to be proved yet bytechnical-economic analysis.

Summary: Within the overthrust zone on the NW slope of Mt. Medvednica the formation of autoclastic rock fabric is frequently observed within the volcanic-sedimentary rock complex. The presented examples suggest that the polyphase deformational process characterized by fragmentation and shearing, affecting the rocks with certain rheological properties, could result in autoclastic rock fabric formation. Frequently, shearing involve rotation of fragments and the entire rock closely resembles those of sedimentary origin.

Summary: In the western part of Sava depression (SW region of Pannonian basin), in heavily drilled range of Žutica field, sandy-silty-marly deposits of Genetic Stratigraphic Sequence Poljana, mainly the Poljana sandstones of Kloštar Ivanić formation (Lower Pontian), are between 50 and 170 m thick, and have a dendritic palaeodrainage pattern characterized by the three major channel sandstone bodies. An efficient correlation of the shape of SP-curve with the vertical grain-size profiles and laboratory measurements of porosity and permeability, enables an insight into the internal architecture of sedimentary bodies. Their spatial depositional framework is displayed with isopach, net sandstone and log-facies distribution maps. With interpretation of the high-resolution dipmeter measurements deterministic elements are introduced into model of concurrent deposition of sand in bathymetric lows, silt on the slopes and mud on the rises or the bottom of the sea. The applied procedure of palaeogeographic analysis - high-resolution stratigraphic mapping, contributes to synergistic management of sandstone reservoirs all the way from exploration process, through the stage of reservoir development to the final improvements in hydrocarbon recovery.

Summary: In the broader area of Beničanci underlying the Rs7 marker, Lower and Middle Miocene breccias, breccia-conglomerates, coarse amd medium grained sandstones, calcarenites/calcrudites and mixed coralinacean sandstones have been determined. In respect of their genesis and shape of sedimentary bodies, the rockfall and debrite breccias are differentiated from the tectonic ones. Both types are mostly composed of limestone and dolomite, but also contain fragments of metamofphic and igneous rocks. The breccias are the main oil-bearing rocks of very good reservoir properties. Breccia-conglomerates and conglomerates are near shore transgresive marine deposits.

Summary: In the of the carbonate Dinarides there are numerous bauxitedeposits of Paleogene age which were formed during the Laramianphase of the Alpine orogenic cycle (e.g. bauxite deposits ofIstria, Dalmatia, Herzegovina...). Different types of Upper Cretaceous limestones and sporadicallypaleogene limestones are the footwall of bauxite deposits. Theoverburden consists of Paleogene clastics and limestones. It hasbeen observed that deposits with lithologicaly differentoverburden are also of different stratigraphic position or age. Thus, the deposits with carbonate overburden are said to be ofthe older and those with clastic overburden of youngerstratigraphic age. By some authors there are at least two andeven three or four bauxitic levels of Paleogene age. Biostratigraphic investigations in Herzegovina confirm the samestratigraphic age of clastic and carbonate overburden and thus, they represent lateral equivalents. Sedimentological investigations account for very complexpeleogeological relations in, as it is believed, the unitesedimentary basin. The groups of transgressive, inundation andregressive lithofacies are established. Locally, some smaller bauxite deposits of Paleogene age areregistred with foraminiferal limestone in the basis, whichreferred for hiatus in marine sedimentation regime that lastedfor a much of Paleogene period. By the synthesis of collected data it could be supposed that themosst Paleogene bauxite deposits are of the same stratigraphicposition thus belong to the same bauxite forming phase.

Summary: In the broader area of Beničanci underlying the Rs7 marker, Lower and Middle Miocene breccias. breciaconglomerates, coarse and medium grained sandstones, calcarenites/calcrudites and mixed coralinacean sandstones have been determined. In respect of their genesis and shape of sedimentary bodies, the rockfall and debrite breccias are differentiated from the tectonic ones. Bothe types are mostly composed of limestone and dolomite, but also contain fragments of metamorphic and igneous rocks. The breccias are the main oil-bearing rocks of very good reservoir properties. Breccia-conglomerates and conglomerates are near-shore transgressive marine deposits.

Summary: In the western part of Sava hydrocarbon-prone depression, inheavily drilled area of oil and gas field Žutica,sandy-silty-shaley deposits of Genetic Sequence of Strata Poljana(Neogene) have been analyzed, subdivided into Genetic Incrementsof Strata - GIS A1-A3, GIS A and GIS A' which are bounded byEK-markers. The principal source of data were electrical log-measurements ofsome 300 wells, esp. the Spontaneous Potential. Subseqentcalibration on cores including the results og granulometricanalyses and analyses of porosity and permeability is preformed. The geometry of sedimentary bodies is shown on schematiccorelation profiles and thickness maps of both the genetic unitsand sandstone reservoirs contained in them. The internalarchitecture of sedimentary bodies is shown by he means ofelectrofacies maps. The depositional model is tested accoding towhich the layers of GSS Poljana were formed by concurrentdeposition of sandstone in topographic lows, siltstone on theslopes and shale on the rises of the bottom of the sea. That'swhy these deposits seem to contain no unconformities. Detaileddendritic palaeodrainage pattern is shown, characterized by thethree major channel sandstone bodies: major basinal channel onthe SW edge of the oil and gas field, tha main local channel inthe middle of the field, and the northern channel brimming thefield from the NE.

Summary: On the basis of the facies characteristics of the sediments, their relation to mafic rocks (ophiolites) and the characteristics of predominant structural fabric, within the complex two units have been delineated: - the ophiolite complex having characteristics of typical ophiolite sequence. The complex shows the preservation of internal continuity of strata and primary contacts between sediments (radiolarites and micrites with lenses of chert) and associated pillow and layered basalts; - the ophiolite melange complex consists of basalt, diabase, gabbro and greywacke blocks accompanied by mostly limestone blocks originating from different stratigraphic units, all of these been chaotically mixed and embedded by pervasively sheared siliceous shale matrix. Based on lithofacial characteristics of the sediments that belong to the first unit and their genetic association with the pillow and layered basalts, that are considered to build up the top parts of typical ophiolite sequence, the deposition in the differentiated oceanic basin is interpreted, marked by autochtonous pelagic sedimentation during the Late Triassic - Early Cretaceous. In the scope of new paleogeography of broader Alpine-Mediterranean area in the Eary Cretaceous, the formation of the second unit is interpreted, within the accretionary wedge in subduction complex formed by and active arc-trenc system characterized by the greywacke and ahale deposition. During the Cretaceous period, the parts of the ophiolithe sequence (basalt, diabase, gabbro and radiolarite), and trench-fill deposits (greywacke and shale) had been incorporated into the accretionary wedge where they were later mixed with carbonate rocks derived from oceanic sea-mount(s) and various cretaceous sediments. On the basis of lithofacies characteristics of the later the evolution of depositional environments ranging from shallow marine to basinal are supposed. The termination of subduction process is marked by the Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene flysch deposits.
