Summary: The bauxite bearing regions of the Dinaric Alps (Dinarides) are predominantly characterized by Mesozoic and partly by Paleogene carbonatic and clastic sediments. Mesozoic carbonate sediments of several thousands meters thickness accumulated, permanently subsiding, in shallow water environment on a spacious carbonate platfor. As a consequence of various geodynamic movements, through the Triassic to the Miocene in the Dinarides there existed dry-land surfaces of variable duration, what went along with the development of palaeokarst and bauxitogeneous processes. Therefore, in that region the bauxite deposits occur in various stratigraphic positions, with essential differences as to the chemical composition, mode of occurence, and deposit type. That diversity of the bauxites in the Dinarides we tried here to present in the form of simplified characteristic stratigraphic profiles and tables for each stratigraphic bauxite horizon.

Summary: The paper presents the stratigraphy of Paleogene strata from the central part of carbonate Dinarides. The carbonate and the clastic rock units were studied. Their contact with underlying Senonian limestone is marked by unconformity as a result of Laramian tectonic phase. The unconformity is denoted by the abundance of bauxite deposits. The abundance of calcareous nanoplancton species as well as bentic foraminifera points at the sedimentation of Paleogene strata during the Eocene period. The succession of sediments with easily recognizeable transgressive, inundation and regressive features has been established. Lithostratigraphical characteristics enabled the distinguishing of larger lithofacies groups. The simultaneousness of carbonate rocks with lower part of clastic succession as well as the transitional lithofacies have been approved. The simultaneous overburden of bauxite deposits regardless of its lithology (carbonate of clastic) speaks in favour of the unite bauxitebearing phase.

Summary: Minor bauxite deposits and occurrences were formed in tectonically disturbed environments in the middle part of the Adriatic geotectonic unit in Dinarides, contemporary with the clastic Jelar-beds in the Late Lutetian time. Uneven chemical composition of these Eocene bauxites, their sporadic occurrences in developed paleorelief as well as characteristic petrographic composition of the immediate overlying rocks point out at different genetical conditions.

Summary: In the paper the results of many years of archival and field investigations in the history of bauxite mining of the three authors are presented. It was established that in Istria in the valley of the river Mirna beneath the Castle of Sovinjak bauxite was exploited already 400 years ago, and that 1808 about this ore the first scientific account was published. Accordingly, the statements in the professional literature that the first bauxite ore for the first time was scientifically described 1821 have to be revised. About this necessary revision here the essential proofs are produced.

Summary: Pyritized bauxite was exploited in the valley of Mirna river in Istria already 400 years ago. It was used as a raw material for production of vitriol and alum. The pyritized byuxite contains both pyrite and marcasite. The conditions of their formation are interpreted in terms of the pH of the micro-environment and the concentration of sulfur and iron. Two phases of pyritization of bauxite have been recognized. Sulphur from the first phase of pyritization originated from organic matter of hyngingwall sediments, while during the second phase sulfur mainly originated from the sea water. Pyritization is in some places accompained by diasporization.
Keywords: pyritized bauxite, diaspore, Paleogene, old bauxite mining, Minjera, Istria.
