Summary: The project is designed to investigate the relationship
between the emersion phases (subaerial exposure phases) and the bauxite and
terra rossa deposits in the Dinarides. The research is closely related to
the development of the carbonate platforms (Triassic to Tertiary in age) in
the Dinarides. Concerning the fact that bauxite and terra rossa are closely
related from the genetic viewpoint, special attention will be given to the
fosill and recent terra rossa deposits and their parent materials. The
effects of paleogeography, duration of subaerial exposure phases erosion
and tectonics to the mineralogical and chemical composition of bauxites,
their parent material and geotectonic position will be evaluated.
Keywords: Dinarides, Carbonate platform, bauxites, Terra rossa, parent materials, paleogeography, paleorelief, paleosols, mercury, rare earth elements (REE), genesis
Research goals: The main task of the project is to investigate
mineralogical and chemical characteristics of the bauxite and terra rossa
deposits and to establish their mutual genetic relationships. Our
intention is also to establish possible relationship between parent
materials of some bauxite horizons and volcanic activity. The scope of
investigation of recent and fosil terra rossa is to establish genesis of
these materials and to define their micromorphological characteristics.
The research of sedimentological and petrological features related to the
carbonate platform is designed to obtain relevant facts on biofacies and
litofacies characteristics of sedimentary rocks.Investigation of rhytmic
and cyclic sedimentation, environmental aspects of sedimentation,
sea-level changes and tectonics are also performed. As the result of all
the factors mentioned shorter or longer emersion phases occured with the
formation of bauxites. The results achieved so far have been published in
major number of publications. They are also included in the reports of the
international project IGCP-287 and will be published in a special
publication of an important world publisher.
