Summary: In this paper has been analysed a recent geomorphologicalprocesses in coastal area of Rijeka Bay (Northern Adriatic). Therapidly sea-level rise started from the end of last Wurm glacialage. Therefore the erosion base, the relif energy and theintensity of the erosion and the sedimentationhave changed. Thelower parts of the numerous valleys have been submerged. Therapid sedimentation began near the Rječina River mouth. In thelast milleniums there is expressiv work of abrasion andbioerosion. The initial forms of the abrasion platform has beenformed. The process abrasion is very selective. It primarilydepends of geological structure and hardness of rocks in thelittoral zone as well as of the local maritime conditions. Arelief of the greatest part of the coastal area of Rijeka Baydepends primarily of local structural and tectonic rock fabric. In littoral zone of carbonate composition we have been seenprocesses of bioerosion. The processes of bioerosion areapparently in the carbonate rocks of littoral zone. The gulliesare active on slopes of Učka Mountain and island Cres, but thisare mainly fossil in northern coastland and island Krk.

Summary: Rijeka, the biggest town and the main port on the Croatian coastof the Adriatic sea, is situated in the Kvarner bay at the mouthof the river Rječina. The Old town was constructed on the wrecksof the Roman town called Tarsatica. Rijeka was severely damagedby the earthquake in 1750. That was the opportunity to extend thecity boundaries and to begin with the town -planning regulationof the New city (Civitas Nova). Then the raising of the levelstarted by shooting material into the sea west of the mouth ofthe Rječina. In this paper we present the geological andgeotehnical properties of the materials in the embankment, betwenthe old mouth of the Rječina, which was formed at the end of 19thcentury. All the results of site investigations in this area havebeen examined. The dimension of stone fill penetration intomarine sediments has been determinated. The stage ofconsolidation in the embankment was determined from thesettlements of bench marks originating from continued series oflevels in 1953. and 1985. The conclusion has been drawn, from theresults of geotehnics site investigations, that liquefaction inmarine sediments is possible during the earthquake with themagnitude M=6 and intensity I=VIII MCS.

Summary: Rijeka harbour cannot accept all the cargo gravitating to it.Complex investigations are necesary for building the harbour andup now several locations have been taken into consideration.Factors which influence the choice of the location are of varioussignificance. All the natural conditions of the terrain have beentaken into consideration for the area of Bakarac, to find theproject solutions which will enable the optimal use of the areafor economic building and exploiting the harbour objekts. Thedeveloped relief and the depth of sea area limited factors forthe building of harbour. The necessary areas could be obtained byraising the level by shooting material on the sea bottom andcutting of the continental parts of the terrain. The rockscomposed of limestones are stable in the natural conditions nadunder the influence of engineering works. They are favourable forembankment material under the sea level. Contrary to that theflysch sediments present unsatisfactory category of the rockmaterial concerning the stability and usage. The geologicalstructure and the tectonics as well as the complex works on theplace of the future harbour make the engineering workscomplicated.

Summary: The Raša river is one of the three largest Istrian rivers. Istriais a peninsula in the north-eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. Awide valley was formed on the mouth of the Raša river which is apotential location for the harbour and the industrialdevelopment. The development of the relief, the process ofsedimentation and the geotechnical properties of sediment body inthe valley of the Raša river is presented in this paper. Thevalley was formed by the erosion of the river into the carbonatebedrock. After the sea level rise in Holocene, the estuary wasformed and then the sedimentation of the suspended deposits, started which originates from the flysch background. Thesedimentation took place in the estuary environments. Withintensive sedimentation the mouth of the Raša river was shiftedfor approximately 4 km in the last 240 years. The sediment bodycontains mainly silty and clay material with 30 to 50 percent ofclay particles. The process of consolidation by gravitationalcompaction in the sediment body is stil not finished. Theunfavourable compressibility properties of the sediment depositwill be the main problem for the construction of the futureframes.

Summary: The coastal area of Rijeka city, witch today for its the most part belongs to the city port, is the result of the embankment of the sea bottom. Because of the unfavorable geotechnical properties of frames in the long term period consolidation appear important deformations witch should be counted upon in the stage of desining. Therefore, for the requirement of design and building of frames, on the embankment part of the city of Rijeka had been done several geotechnical researches with scope to establish geotechnical properties of the soil. The greatest part of data is about the results of unvestigations inside the layers of marine sediments, this paper presents a part of those. Based on these informations arises the question about the right technology of obtaining new surfases in the coastal area.

Summary: The paper deals with the geotechnical issues regarding further expansion of the Port of Rijeka. The history of construction and expansion of the Port of Rijeka referred in the first place to the taking of new land or raising the level of the sea bottom by shooting earth. The original layers of the bottom of the see in front of Rijeka have rather unfavourable geotechnical characteristics. Therefore the construction of the port has been rather time-consuming and costly. The effects the engineers of the time were unable to foresee are apparent nowadays. Regarding rather requiring plans of the urban area and port development the paper deals with the recommendations of correctly geared expansion of the port from the geo-engineering aspect, warning of possible negative repercussion of incorrect methods of construction.

Summary: A lot of cities along the Croatian Adriatic coast are human settlements in continuation since antique ages. The permanent rise of the sea level and the simultaneous sinking of the land caused the withdrawal of the shoreline. this phenomena created troubles to inhabitants of the coastal settlements. Consequently, the builders of that time resisted to this process in various ways. The conditions of foundations changed in the course of the millenniums continuosly, thus often the area of footing was risen to higher levels. The changes caused in the urban area due to the rising of the Adriatic sea level, are presented in this paper.

Summary: The characteristics of flysch slopes of the south Adriatic coast are the block paleo-slides and the strong earthquakes. Nowadays the blocks of rock masses occur on the flysch basement. The stability of these blocks is questionable and on some of them also buildings have been constructed. Possible reactivation of some paleo-slides by a strong earthquake is assumed. The predisposition for such an occurrence is when the slope consists of the elements of contrasting physical and mechanical properties and when there is the distinction of two media of quite opposite hydrogeological features. The potential slip surface was formerly active on the contact of two geotechnical media - a block mass and a ductile flysch basement representing a seismic footwall. Locations in Dubrovnik and Montenegro coastal regions have been used as the illustrations and accordingly the parameters of the earthquake of April 15, 1979 are adopted in the stability analysis. For the purpose of seismic stability computation physical and mechanical features of the flysch lithological elements relevant for the selection of the most appropriate method of computation are previously discussed. The sliding block method has been aplied.

Summary: Mechanical properties of three carbonate-rock types originating from the Upper Cretaceous are compared: limestone, dolomite and tectonic dolomitic breccia. Two siye ranges have been considered: intact rock sample and rock mass. Rocks have been crearly defined acording to their significant physical and mechanical properties. In the intact rock range, the limestone quality is higher when compared to other rock types, as its strenght is greater and its moduli are higher. In the rock mass range, the inversion tendencies were observed, resulting in the increased quality of both the dolomitic rock mass and tectonic dolomitic breccia.

Summary: Regional characteristics of Dubrovnik and Montenegro zones of the Adriatic coast are the existence of block paleoslides and the occurence of strong earthquakes. Rock blocks on the flysch slope are found at present. Various buildings are constructed on some blocks. The aim of the paper is to analyse recent state of block stability and the possibility of reactivation of landslide due to earthquake. The clear differentiation of the engineering geology elements of the slopes, which represent the area of high contrast of physical and mechanical characteristics, follows the hydrogeological division on permeable and impermeable rocks. The possible sliding surfaces were once the mechanically active planes and at the same time are border-lines between two geotechnical media - the rock block and the quasiplastic base. The flysch complex is adopted as the seismic footwall. The paper includes stability analysis under seismic conditions with the parameters of the Montenegro earthquake in 1979.

Summary: In the paper general engineering-geologic conditions in Croatia are represented. Regional distribution of landslide occurences depending on geologic feature, configuration, hydrogeological and climatic conditions has been discussed. Also, the influence of the region seismicity upon the slope stability is reviewed. The experience obtained so far on the engineering-geologic mapping for the purposes of geotechnical works is described. The paper also discusses the method of data collection, monitoring, analyses and presentation of the data. Due to the regional representation of landslide types, the characteristic instability models can be adopted for particular regions. The damages caused by landslides, the social-economic aspects as well as the conventional methods of repair are considered. Thus, a basis for zoning after slide hazard and risk will be established. All the data are planned to be covered by GIS-technique. At present, in the Republic of Croatia, the Zagreb region endangered by landslides is of particular interest and it is intended to be used as a pilot region for zoning methodology. The work on the landslide inventory continues in accordance with the current data processing requirements. The mentioned approach and the experience so far would be used to provide better solutions of the problems in the field of geotechnical engineering.

Title: Engineering Geologic Characteristic of the Coastal and Submarine Zones of Rijeka Bay

Summary: This thesis deals with scientific analysis of the coastal and submarine zones of Rijeka Bay as a part of Kvarner channel area of the North Adriatic. Great climatic changes and oscillations of the sea level during Pleistocene were, along with tectonic movements, significant morphologic factor. Morphological characteristic of the relief and geological structure of rock system in the RijekaBay as well as significant seismicity, suggest very lively recent tectonic activity. Relatively abrupt changes in the erosion base followed by climatic changes and tectonic movements, caused periodically intensive denudation. All the rocks in the Rijeka Bay area can be classified in three litogenetic complexes: carbonate, flysch, fluvial and marine sediments. Carbonate complex terrains are generally suitable for the most types of construction from the point of stability, deformability and bearing capacity. Limiting factors are usually very irregular relief and steep slopes. Stability problems with flysch slopes are present in natural conditions and particularly in construction cust. Fluvial sediments are generally less suitable for construction due to changeable deformability and often small bearing capacity. Submarine slopes are characterized with extremely different engineering geological conditions. Sea bottom is mostly unsuitable for construction due to the thick fluid mud and finegrained sand which is subject to liquefaction.
