Summary: By decreasing sulphur activity coefficient in metal and bystabilizing of carbide structure, manganese influences favourablythe pig iron quality. By continuous adding of manganese ore tothe blast furnace charge, mathemetical dependence of manganeseand sulphur concentracion in metal in the entire interval ofconcentracion changes in the observed metals was noticed.Selective analysis of the dependence of high and low manganeseconcentrations in metal and sulphur shows that stronger manganeseeffect on sulphur concentration decrease is evident at theincreased manganese concentration in metal.

Summary: The external and internal quality of seamless tubes in the SisakSteelwork is unsatisfying. The tubes are manufactured fromingots, continuous cast blooms and rooled billets. The defectscoming from raw materials (semis) are more frequent on tubesrolled from ingots, due to the poor surface and in adequate topform. The major share of surface defects originates frominclusions caused mostly by worse pit refractories. A deepshrinkage cavity is caused by casting in big-and-dawn moldswithout hot tops. The surface of tubes from continuous castblooms is not much better because of the large frequency ofsurface inclusions and internal cracks.

Summary: Susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of tubing fromcommercial medium carbon Mn steel, as well as of experimental lowalloy Mn-V steel was exmained. Cathodic charging with hydrogenrevealed that by heat treatment of tubing better resistivity toHE is achieved. Fractographic analysis of stepwise cracking fromsolution saturated with H2S has shown the considerable role ofMnS inclusions in microstructure: they are trap-sites forhydrogen accumulation.

Summary: Lead and its alloys are the most suitable materials for the rheological modelling of hot rolling processes. With small additions of tellurium it is possible to change significantly the rheological properties of lead, a fact important for the maintenance of several similarity conditions. The importance of the properties of material on the kinematics of the deformed metal is demonstrated by means of process modelling of thick strip rolling.

Summary: The deformation anomalies of higher orders at plastometric tests are studied on easily deformable lead alloys-models of different rheological complexity by original testing methods. It is ascertained that the development of deformation anomalies depends upon the degree of rheological complexity of the material. Simple strain anomalies are due to the inadequate conditions of contact friction, while those of the highere orders results mainly from microrelief of the sample butts. Recommendations for the obtention of homogeneity of deformation at plastometric tests are given. The testsshow that the deformation of rheologically complex metals develops according to laws basically different of the contemporary notions of the mechanics of plastics deformation.

Summary: In determining the oscillation parameters, the relation of the mould oscillation speed and the casting speed must be considered. A suitable negative strip ratio must be assured. The mould speed depends on the product of the amplitude and the frequency. Experience showed that it is more suitable to cast at low amplitudes and high frequencies. The demand for a low amplitude arises from the requirement that the displacement of the mould during the negative strip time must be smaller than the thickness of the slag layer on the steel meniscus in the mould. In this paper, the bases for optimization on the oscillation parameters are given, the relation of this parameters to the behaviour of casting powders, and some results obtained in Steelworks Sisak are presented.

Summary: Heat treated specimens of Single crystal nickel base superalloy were submitted to tension creep at the temperature of 900řC. The deformation process was investigated at different states of creep. In the matrix hardened by bimodal precipitates the development of dislocation structure and precipitates morphology changes were studied by means of TEM on longitudinal sections of creep deformed samples close to fracture surfaces. The observation of fracture surfaces shows that fracture induced by creep damage starts from incipient casting pores of cracks initiated in carbide precipitates.

Summary: Environment sensitive cracking of high strength low alloyed (HSLA) steels usually occurs in deep sour wells. Hydrogen sulfide dissolved in water and oil phase has been proved to be the principal species responsible for sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC). In this work, resistance to SSCC of an experimental low alloyed Mn-Mo steel was increased by properly chosen heat treatment conditions. Tensocorrosion tests and microstructural investigations by x-ray diffraction revealed that residual stresses are reliable indicator of SSCC-susceptibility.

Summary: The friction force at continuous castings of steel represents thedifference between the force acting at the mould oscillationduring casting and in the idle motion. For the measurement ofthis force more methods are used: extension band, load cell andpower of the oscillator motor. In this work the friction forcewas determined from the difference of the acceleration measuredby a vibrometer: at the idle oscillation, with load of known massand during casting. The method does not require the insertion ofsensors in the parts of the oscillation system. The acchievedvalues of friction force depend on the oscillation parameter.

Summary: Two low-alloyed Mn-V steels differing in sulfur content (0,005 %and 0,028 %) were hydrogen charged in two different stresscorrosion test. All specimens fractured after charging revealedbrittleness, with less ductibility - loss in steel with moresulfur. The same steel also had better resistivity to sulfidestress corrosion cracking, what was ascribed to more orderedmicrostructure obtained by heat treatment (normalizing). Thehighest resistivity to hydrogen embrittlement has shown the lowsulphur steel after normalizing and tempering.

Summary: The paper represents the research of the influence of the condition of pickled and thermally treated surface on the quality of operation for temporary protection of seamless steel tubing. It was found that, in the presence of oxidation, a significant amount of oxsidelayers Fe3O4, as the basic phase, and other ferrous oxside Fe2O3 and FeO are formed on the surface of hot-rolled seamless steel tubing. The scanning x-ray analysis of pickled samples in sulfuric acid, in operating conditions, has shown the presence of remaining oxide layers-scale and the occurence of clean metal surface at the same time. With the thermal treatment, the sharee of oxide layers-scale is significantly increased. The protective coat discontinuously covers such a surface. The best results have been obtained with laboratory pickling, thermal treatment, and with the protection of hot-rolledseamless tubing at controlled pickling parameters(bath composition and temperature, pickling time, washing out after pickling) and the atmosphere in the thermal treatment oven. The best results have been obtained by sand blasting of oxside layers-scale(mechanical method).

Summary: Exposed to the extremely aggressive environment of deep sour wells, oil country tubular goods are expected to satisfy both, demands for high mechanical performances and also high corrosion resistance to brittle sulfide stress cracking. Development of such OCTG-products relies on adequate chemical composition of steel used, as well as on production technology possibilities. Corrosion and mechanical properties of low alloyed Mn-V tubing were investigated depending on heat treatment procedures. Two different regimes of HT have been performed regarding disposable equipment in Željezara Sisak. Tensocorrosion tests, metallographic inspections and fractographic analyses revealed that heat treatment by quenching and tempering at higher temperatures resulted in a microstructure which provides better mechanical and corrosion resistance. Results obtained are input parameters in the know-how triade TECHNOLOGY-MICROSTRUCTURE-PROPERTIES, what is obligatory cycle in new products research and development.

Summary: A literary review of the development of open-heart steelproduction has been given in the work with special regard to thepresent achievements in balacing carbon content and melttemperature in the refining process as well as optimal control ofthermal regulation. The work is directed to seeking adequate influence ofdecarbonication, which is calculated by means of flue gasanalysis in the vertical canal of furnace head and otherparameters in open hearth furnaces, upon fuel consumption. It hasbeen shown that melt heating during the refining process withoxygen injection without fuel feeding is impossible in smalleopen-hearth furnaces. The method of carbon content follow-up has been in proved in therefining process by means of flue-gas analysis in the verticalcanal of furnace head. The accuracy of carbon content follow uphas been increased by flue gas analysis in the vertical canal inthe relation to the analysis of flue gas in the common flue. In the concluzion of this work optimal necessary flow mass ofmasut for continuous control of melt heating in the refiningprocess obtained by means of model has been shown depending ondecarbonisation rate and other parameters without continuousmeasurement of melt temperature.

Summary: The meniscus appearances during continuous slabs casting havebeen investigated by metallographic technique and mathematicalanlysis. The mathematical tests have shown that the oscillationmarks could be classified according to the presence or absence ofsmall hook in the subsurface structure. The positive segregationof the soluted elements, especially the phosphorus ones have beentracted at the bottom of the oscillation marks and have beenclassified into two types. The first type has been tracted at theunder surface hooks, whereas the other type of the positivesegregation is found at the bottom of the oscillation marks. Thetransverse cracks occur along the bottom of the oscillationmarks. The surface of the transverse cracks shows interdendriticappearances in the vicinity of the slab surface which means thatthe cracks have started when hot slab broke into the mould. It isshown by the theory of lubrication that due to film geometry ofthe molten powder which is found between the meniscus solidifiedshell and mould wall, considerable pressure gradient is in acondition to deform the meniscus. The pressure gradient in themolten powder is created by reciprocal mould progression inrelation to the slab solidified shell. The surface balance offorces between steel and molten powder is applied for calculatingthe meniscus as a function of the pressure created in the film atdifferent stages of the mould oscillation cycle. This shows thatthe contact point between the meniscus and the mould goes out ofthe phase for 1/2f and has a large amplitude than the moulddisplacement. By heat transfer analysis, the temperaturedistribution is predicted in the infiltrated film between thesolidified slab shell and the mould wall.

Summary: The definition of process parameters making influence to the quality of iron with application of personal computer and program package based on the mathematical statistics method, represents one of the ways for mastering and improvement of the general iron quality. The offected data processing, covering a longer time period, on the investigated aggregate, indicates one unstable technological process based on the unprepared(raw) charge and low blowing temperature parameters. This causes a low utilization of gas reduction capability, higher participation of direct reduction, low production and high coke consumption. The analyses of iron quality and distribution of the particular elements between iron and slag in the suitable reduction atmosphere, point out the importance on maintaining the thermal conditions within the furnace chamber as on important cause of iron composition variation. The evaluation of the parameters influencing the production and iron quality indicates the necessity of: benefication of ore stopping, homogenization of charging materials, increase of temperature and blowing air, proper selection of slag quantity, corrections or changes of current desulphuration method, introduction of accurate and fast quality control during the production process, introduction of information system for the monitoring and planning the iron production. The improvement of average obtained values of influencing parameters within these raw materials and technological conditions of production in Iron Works Vareš will provide the decrease of dry coke consumption by 55 kg/t of iron, increase of production by 12,45% and iron production of considerably higher quality.
