Summary: The results from a 15-odd year study of the concentrations ofnitrates, clorides and sulphates in the groundwaters of theVaraždin and Bartolovec well fields and the concentration ofnitrates in the Drava river and the Belski Dol spring wereanalysed. The pollutants of the groundwaters in the two wellfields are industrial and municipal waters or generally urbansewers and mineral fertilizer. Some sulphates derive fromairpollution and some chlorides reach groundwaters byinfiltrating road salt. Sudden increase in concentration ofnitrogen in the forms of nitrates, nitrites and ammonium in thewaters from the Bartolovec well field in 1982 and 1983 has itsorigin in the increased groundwater levels in the area around thereservoir of the Čakovec Hydro-Electric Plant following thefilling of the reservoirs. As a result, large quantities ofnitrates accomulated in surrounding soils, have been washed awayby groundwater. At the same time, highest concentrations ofnitrates in the Varaždin well field have been reported.
Keywords: Groundwaters, well field, quality, reservoir, nitrates, chlorides, sulphates.

Chemical analysis of ground water samples indicate the increased nitrate concentration. In order to identify the origin of nitrates and to assess the posibility of improvement of the present situation, the numeric model of the pollution flow and discharge has been worked out.

    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The paper contains a comprehensive description of research of the source area of Beljski Dolwhich, with respect to the considerable quantity of good quality water, represents an important economic resource for the Županija (County) of Varaždin. Succesfull management of the source and of its water depends on the knowledge on its character, and on its protection. The paper proposesactive protection technical measures in the 1st protective zone of the source area, which will protect the source from the adverse effects forming from the existing road. The source area Beljski Dol with its yield of 63 l/sec is important to water supply of a major part of the Županija, which calls for active conservation measures to protect the source from the adverse effects of traffic on the nearby road. The quantity of water from the upper and lower source coming out into the open watercourse has not be measured, which should be done over a longer period, along with piezometer measurements. The possibility of controlled use of larger quantities of water from the Beljski Dol source, as well as of the use of ground water down-stream from the source, should be the subject of further investigation with the view of utilization of larger water quantity.

    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The public opposition will have to be seriously reckoned with if any waste disposal facility is to get into operation. Thus, the siting of facilities will be an important disposal issue. While people can understand the need for disposal facilities on a national or regional level, no one wants one near his home or workplace. Wherever a facility is proposed to be sited, there will be strong local opposition. It is very important therefor, that the best possible method be used in order to select the best sites. The entire decision process required to get disposal facilities into operation is extremely complex. Many political, legal, and social factors interact on many levels. There overall concern in the waste siting problem has been described by different sources to be protection of water resources, public health, and the environment, or just general population wellbeing. A good metodology, than, than will find the sites with the least adverse and most beneficial effects in these multiobjective areas.

    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The shortage of drinking water will present, in near future, one of the major problems in water supply. Water pollution in some locations has already reached the tolerance limits and to stop the deterioration trend of water quality it is necessary to establish sanitary protection zones, i.e. to find the principles of effective protection of ground water and sources. In the Republic of Croatia, the protection is defined by the Regulations on Protective Measures and Conditions for Defining of Sanitary Zones for Protection of Drinking Water (NN 22/1986). The Regulations are based on empirical determining of protection zones, defining three different zones. This way of solving the issue causes difficulties, in particular in protection of sources in rocks of intergranular porosity and of karst sources. The analysis of demonstrated solutions of protections, and discussion of their possible drawbacks and problems that might occur if the Regulations were fully respected, discovers the major defects of the Regulations and proposes the principles of groundwater and water sources protection. Ground water and sources may be effectively protected by measures organized and implemented on three levels. The first level would encompass protection of registerred and categorised groundwater resources on the teritory of the entire Republic of Croatia. The second level would be inplemented by protection zones around individual sources, and thir sizes would be determined on a case-to-case basis, depending on actual hydrogeological conditions and local conditions. The third level would include a number of measures regarding the design and constructions of water intake facilities

Summary: Waste water treatment plant designs are often based on the results of pilot plant operation due to unsteady characteristics and quantity of water entering the plant. Due to several mistakes in design and construction of sumps built within the waste water treatment plants for the town of Bjelovar, the increased quantity of sludge was noticed at the plant outlet. The paper describes a sequence of activities which lead to detection of the cause for increased quantity of sediment in effluent, and the method by which the operation of the existing sumps was improved. The efficiency of all applicable actions on the sumps was analized.

Summary: In numerical models pollution is most frequently simulated by trasers. The decision on the choice of method of traser transport through groundwater flow depends on the problem to be solved. This paper analyses the finite element method. Numerical model has been tested on the one-dimension case and illustrated on the two-dimension simulation of pollution transport from landfill through saturated porous medium. The impact of numerical diffusion on the results in a two-dimension case has been tested by help of the random walk method.

Summary: The paper discusses random walk method and the criterion of its appropriateness for the dispersion eqation solution. The computer program is completed which simulates by this method the pollutant transport of indicator type in a homogenous porous medium with the developed two-dimensional stationary flow. Analyzing the solutions of one-dimensional and two-dimensional transport problems computed by this program, some advantages of this method compared to the finite element method and the finite difference method have been illustrated.

Summary: The paper deals with the problem of Zagreb waste disposal site Jakuševac. For almost 30 years the uncontrolled open dump has been used. The composition and quantity of solid wastes are determined. The measures for the reclamation of the site are considered and the proposition for the construction of the sanitary landfill is given. The role of the slurry trench cut-off wall and the system of discharge wells is pointed out from the geotechnical point of view. The results of illustrative numerical analyses are presented.

Summary: The various agricultural activities affects the groundwater quality. Addition of fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides and other additives applied to the soil contribute to the groundwater pollution. Irrigation degrades the quality of water due evapotranspiration, which concentrates salts in irrigation return water. Solid wastes produced by agricultural activities, particulary dairies and feedlots are in part deposited in landfills and leachatess also may affect the qroundwater quality. To control the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms governing groundwater pollution it is necessary to establish an adequate groundwater quality monitoring system. The wells to be sampled should be chosen to reflect the quality of water in upper part of the aquifer, and the analysis for the major inorganic chemical constituents and selected pesticides are advisable in most cases.
