Summary: The methods of apparent power decomposition in one-port
networks with periodically operated switches are analyzed.Power phenomena
that give rise to the existence of apparent power components other than the
active power are recognized. It is shown that regarding source power factor
compensation the frequency- -domain based methods of apparent power
decomposition are more effective than the time-domain based methods. The
same conclusion does not apply to the multiport (polyphase) networks. The
main reasons are due to the ambiguous meaning of the concept of polyphase
apparent power and due to the requirement that in order to improve the
power properties of polyphase source networks it is necessary to find out
methods of non-active power components compensation on the instantaneous
basis. From the power applications point of view, the most important
examples of the networks with periodically operated switches are electronic
power converters.Starting from the principle of power balance at each
frequency, conversion process in electronic power converters as well as
conversion properties of network devices are explained.
Keywords: periodically operated switches , apparent power components , power conversion at frequency , electronic power converter
Research goals: The development of a more complete power theory
of networks with periodically operated switches for the purpose of: a) the
choice of power circuits of electronic power converters more compatible
with the source network characteristics ; b) the choice of non-active power
components compensation methods in one-port nonlinear networks and in
multiport nonlinear networks ; c) the development of the methods and
equipments for measurement of the particular components of apparent
power in nonlinear networks .
