Summary: Enhanced models of a telecommunication traffic: non-Poisson
models suitable for description of calls and information within a call,
information flows and traffic parameters in a service switching
environment. Influence of changes in the traffic domain on the network
planning methodology, including overall development scenario and evaluation
of specific solutions. Network reference model, its information model and
relational data base. Service switching processes, logic of
telecommunications and generic functions of the switching node: operations
with information streams, call and service processing, extension on service
switching and control, flexible allocation of network resources. Research
includes: - methods for network development form the point of view of
capacity and functions, for voice, non-voice and multimedia communication,
- stochastic and deterministic models, network planning and optimization
algorithms, flow control procedures, - transition from information
switching to service switching, formal models and methods for the synthesis
of services with complex interaction with a basic call, - service
provision and distributed data bases in an open environment, - functional
integration of public and private, business oriented, communication
systems, - workstations and software tools for telecommunications, -
experimental verification, laboratory network set-up.

Research goals: Overall goal is to study selected telecommunications
and informatics topics relevant for dynamic development of networks,
systems, services and technologies, oriented toward telecommunication needs
of an information society. By integrating various types of information,
different kinds of information processing and telecommunication
technologies a network model is obtained where each user request can be
mapped on a specific service and solved in a flexible way. Expected results
are as follows: - methods for evaluating different network development
scenarios with mixed circuit and packet switching capabilities, - criteria
and algorithms for information flow routing in a switching network and
circuit/bandwith allocation in a transmission network, - access network
planning for new voice and non-voice services, local communication systems
based on integrated voice and data communications, mixed circuit and packet
switching and local area network, - synthesis of call processes and service
switching functions using finite automata, Petri net and calculus of
communicating systems formalisms, - telematic services in an open
environment, information systems and data bases, - diagnostic and self
diagnostic algorithms, reliability and availability models in
telecommunications, - workstations based on UNIX operating system for
design and management in telecommunications, - education of young
researchers.
