    Summary: A numerical method for the Schotky diode microwave mixersimulation is described in this paper. The method is based uponsubdivision of the network into linear and nonlinear parts. Thevoltage and current waveforms are determined by the use of theharmonic balance technique and the reflection algorithm.Computing is provided in the time and frequency domains. The fastFourier transform algorithm is used to convert between thefrequency and time domain. Some examples of diode mixersimulation for different loading environments are given.

    Summary: The paper presents the results of the Institute of High-FrequencyTechnology in the area of advanced antenna technology. Basicconcepts of the active antenna copmosed of Gunn diodesand rectangular patches are presented. Using quasi-opticalcombining technique a simple active array of two Gunn-patchelements on glass cloth reinforced PTFE substrate was created.The measurements showed high radiation power, advantageouspolarisation characteristics and low second harmonic content.Experiments demonstrate feasibility of the oscillating antennaconcept in transmitting active arrays and quasi-opticalmicrowave-millimeter wave power combiners.

    Summary: An efficient and sufficiently good general method of microwave mixer analysis is presented. The process involves first analyzing the non-linear device under large-signal excitation only. By the use of nonlinear analysis the LO voltage waveform is obtained, and diode differential conductance and capacitanceare determinated. A linear diode model, and conversion admittance are formed which relate the small-signal sideband currents and voltages of the diode. The expressions for conversion loss and port impedance are determined. A computer program is developed to perform the analysis. Results are presented to show how the reactive terminating impedances at image and sum frequency ports affect mixer input and output impedances, and mixer conversion loss.

    Summary: Bipolar transistor CAD modelling is performed. As a basis the model elements obtained from S parameter measurements and additional DC measurements are used. The small signal model is extended to nonlinear incremental model. A wideband feedback amplifier is designed. The output spectrum of the realized circuit with the low excitation level is measured. A nonlinear amplifier transfer function for weak nonlinearities is obtained by the use of Volterra series representation. The results obtained by measurements and simulation are conpared.

    Summary: A numerical solution for the excess capacitance and inductance of a microstrip step discontinuity is obtained by the method of moments. The discontinuity is a transition between two semi-infinite infinitesimally thin perfectly conducting strips. Above ground plane, these strips are immersed in a medium that has constant permeability. A numerical solution for the excess capacitance of a compensated discontinuity is obtained by the same method. Compensation of discontinuity in transmission lines has been carried out by removing appropriate triangular portion from the discontinuity configurations and by a gradual change in the conductor cross section in such a way that the characteristic impedance of the connected lines remain constant right up to the junction.

    Summary: Second and third order intermodulation distortion small signal amplifier using Volterra series is analyzed. Functional series in high series amplifiers with memory are used. Incremental nonlinear model is necessary for nonlinear transfer function evaluation. Bipolar transistor model on the basis of S-parameter measurements is performed. It is possible to obtain second and third intermodulation distortion components inn dependence of the source and load impedance. Optimal source and load impedance for maximum values of second and third order intercept points is found.

    Summary: In this article one of the possible methods in the analysis or the projecting of the oscillators is exposed. The starting point of this method is the transistor, the three-port element. The following step is determining of the common electrode, stating the transistor on two-port element, respectively. By adding the feedback the unit develops into one-port unit of elements, oscillator. Such analysis needs many calculations with complex numbers. Quick transformation of S-parameters from the common-emitter configuration in the common-base or common-collector configuration is enabled by the usage of the computer. The adding of the feedback and input and output matching networks is also possible. This method is used in the construction of the negative resistance oscillators. The analysis of greater number of transistors results derives the conclusions about the optimal common electrode and the feedback for that type of oscillators.

    Summary: This paper describes the results of research and development in the area of advanced antenna technology being pursued at the Institute for High Frequency Techniques. Basic concept and technology of active antenna composed of Gunn diodes and rectangular patches are presented. Using quasi-optical combining technique a simple active array of two Gunn-patch elements on glass cloth reinforced PTFE substrate was realized. Co-polar and cross-polar radiation patterns, ERP, and power combining and phase locking properties have been measured. ERP of 96 mW with 25 mW diode at the frequency of oscillation 11.7 GHz is obtained. Second harmonic content is more then 40 dB below the principal radiation. Injection locking technique was used to improve short-term and long-term stability of the oscillating array. Experiments demonstrate feasibility of the oscillating antenna concept in transmitting active arrays and quasi-optical microwave/millimeter-wave power combiners.

    Summary: ABSTRACT: The results of research and development in the area of active antenna technology have been presented. The applicability of a modified rectangular microstrip patch radiator for active antenna using one-port active element has been demonstrated. The modified rectangular patch antenna (40x25 mm2), designed for the operating frequency of 3.4 GHz, was manufactured and tested. The invertor line was placed inside the rectangular hollow in the central part of the patch. Two active patch elements (8x12 mm2) for the 10.6 GHz frequency were realized. Co-polar and cross- polar radiation patterns, spectral purity and effective isotropically radiated power (EIRP) have been measured. Using quasi-optical combining technique a simple active array of two Gunn-patch elements on glass cloth reinforced PTFE substrate has been realized. Experiments demonstrate feasibility of the oscillating antenna concept in transmitting active arrays and quasi-optical microwave/ millimeter-wave power combiners. The circuit should have many applications in low cost transmitters and quasi-optical power combiners.

    Summary: An active antenna composed of Gunn diode with rectangular patch for quasi-optical power combining arrays is described. The patch is modified to improve cross-polarisation patterns and to perform VCO capabilities. Patch parameters are optimized by using a moment method procedure. An active antenna for 9.85 GHz range is realized. A tuning range of more than 300 MHz at 9.85 GHz and EIRP of 208 mW are obtained by single path antenna. Low levels of cross-polarisation are observed. Injection locking of the oscillating antenna is investigated. A locking range of 6.7 MHz is obtained at 9.9 GHz. Good agreement between theoretically predicted and experimental results is obtained.

    Summary: In this article reflection coefficient measurement error for three-probe reflectometer is analyzed. By computer simulation, which uses Ghannouchi and Bossisio's worst case method, the influence of power measurement error, probe locatiions, reference coupler directivity, attenuator value and probe coupling on useful reflectometer frequency bandwidth has been investigated. Using simulation results, useful frequency bandwidth for the reflectometer with parameters which can be found in practice, was estimated.

Part of the patch metallization was removed to form a rectangular opening where a Gunn diode was placed. This modification lowered the Q and allowed the oscillating patch to perform VCO capabilities. Patch parameters were optimized using a moment method procedure. A tuning range of more than 300 MHz at 9.85 GHz and EIRP of 208 mW was obtained. A clear spectrum with no spurious components of the free running oscillating antenna was observed. Injection locking experiments were performed. At 9 V bias, a locking gain of 40.9 dB with locking bandwidth of 5.9 MHz was obtained. Radiation patterns in E and H plane were measured. Low levels of cross- polarisation were observed.

    Summary: A procedure of adding a parasitic patch element over a driven rectangular patch in order to achieve an increased bandwidth of microstrip antennas has been considered. Comprehensive measurements were carried out and enabled one to determine the influence of a separation distance between the parasitic and the driven patch on the input impedance locus. The matching network consisting of a single line transformer was derived and its parameters computed for the antenna with optimized separation distance between the driven and parasitic patches. The achieved relative bandwidth is about 30% with VSWR lower or equal to 2.

    Summary: A rectangular patch antenna with a Gunn diode integrated in a rectangular opening in the patch is proposed as oscillating antenna for spatial power combiners. This configuration gives a better defined loading for the active device. The overall Q of the antenna is reduced, thus allowing a wide band frequency tuning by changing the bias voltage. Injection locking properties are investigated throughout the tuning range. A relatively wide locking range with a good locking gain is achieved.

    Summary: An experimental investigation on stacked circular patches was performed. he influence of the electromagnetically coupled radiator on the input impedance and the radiation patterns was investigated. Two cases of excitation were observed. The lower patch was in the first case excited with a coaxial line, and in the second with a microstrip line on the edge. A significant increase in input impedance bandwidth and a possibility of wide band input impedance matching was observed.

    Summary: A method for finding optimal dimensions of the line transformer to match an arbitray load to an arbitrary real impedance is described. The procedure takes into account the frequency dependence of the impedance to be matched and optimizes transformer length to obtain maximum bandwidth. It is shown how to find an optimal transformer for a load, using its previously measured input impedance data. The restrictions of such a matching are given. The area in the Smith chart, in which the load cannot be matched is determined.

This dicontinuity is a via between two semi-infiniteinfinitesimally thin perfectly conducting strips. Above a groundplane, these strips are immersed in a medium that has constantpermeability.     Summary: The purpose of the research was the analysis of theinteraction of a semiconductor amplifiers coupling network tothe linear and nonlinear distortion in the circuits forradiocommunication systems. Analysis was primarily concerned tothe systems with weak nonlinearities using mathematical modelwith memory ability analysis. The response of memory systems aredepending not only of instantaneous excitation, but also ofexcitations which have been existed before this time on the inputof the system as well. This problem, and the problem of generalexcitation (excitation function of the general shape including excitation by noise) was treated by application of Volterrafunctionals. It has been shown that such a mathematical approachrepresent in fact generalization of system impulse response- convolution integral. Because such a mathematical approach wasnot usually used in classical intermodulation distortion analysisin radiocommunication circuits, chapters three and four aredealing with introduction to Volterra series application in thefield of nonlinear transfer function determination for someparticular series. Starting point in the analysis was development of thelinear and nonlinear model of active element. Measured results ofactive elements and of realized circuit was used in the analysisas well. According to the fact that analysis was applied in thelower microwave band (below 1 GHz), bipolar transistor as activeelement was chosen. Firstly, linear small signal model was realized, and thenthe analysis was extended to nonlinear model of bipolartransistor. Results of such an approach was more accurate model for frequency band below 1 GHz, in comparison to theliterature. Measured scattering parameters were the basis for themodelling. Nonlinear model of bipolar transistor consist of fournonlinear elements: exponential emitter nonlinearity connected tothe base-emitter barrier dynamic resistance, diffusioncapacitance of the same barrier, collector-base barriercapacitance, and collector nonlinear current source. The last one include also avalanche breakdownnonlinearities. Passive components modelling was also necessarybecause of better accuracy of the selective amplifier model. This model is the first one which contain all mentionednonlinearities. Frequency characteristics of the model andmeasured realized circuits were compared, and results are in satisfactorily correspondence. Distortion measurements wereperformed as a function of frequency and of load impedances.Analysis of simulation and measurements results was the relation between third-order and second-order distortion. In theliterature such an explicit relationship can not be found for thebipolar transistor amplifier. Theoretical model was compared with experimental circuit.The measured data are in a good correspondence with calculationresults. On the basis of applied analysis it is possible tominimize influence of the second and third harmonic components ifthe dependence of the source and load impedance on thefundamental frequency and frequency of second harmonic is known.

    Summary: The work covers techniqes of scattering parameters measurements.Theoretical background of six-port network analyzer is given,demands on the components of the measuring system are analyzed,and the appropriate cicruit solutions are given. For experimentalresearch, the reflectometer consisting of the symmetrical fiveport and directional coupler is chosen. Two methods forbroadening frequency band of the hybrid are used. By addingSchottky diode detectors, A/D converter, and by connecting to thepersonal computer, the experimental single six-port networkanalyzer has been realized. Results of the measurements of theunknown reflection coefficient are given, and compared by thosefrom computer simulation.

    Summary: The aim of this work is to describe the Green functions of thegrounded dielectric slab and their use in the analysis ofmicrostrip antennas by means of the moment method procedure. Inthe first part the Green functions are described. The theory ofdistributions is introduced and properties of Helmholtz'sequation are given. The Green functions of the groundeddielectric slab are calculated in detail. They are given in spaceand spectral domain. Surface waves are also considered. Spectraldomain Green functions for multilayer dielectric substrates areevaluated via transmission line analogy. The use of Greenfunctions in the analysis of microstrip antennas is given in thesecond part. The theory of moment methods is developed as anumerical method for solving integro-differential equations.Moment method procedure is used in the analysis of microstripantennas. The comparison between calculated and measured resultsis made for rectangular patches. The analysis of infinite phasedarrays of microstrip patches is given and the comparison withfinite prased arrays of rectangular patches is made.
