Summary: Several simulation methods are used to evaluate the expected values and correlations of the ordered characteristic roots of a sample covariance matrix arising from a normal distribution with zero mean and identity covariance matrix. The methods used are importance sampling coupled with regression and ratio estimates. The comparison of the efficiency of these methods is determined, where efficiency is defined in terms of variability measures.

Summary: PILOT (Process Improvement by L.O.G.I.C.A. Operational Team) is a complete process improvement pilot study application, providing data collection, entry, analysis and decision making. It is designed primarily as a simple, easy-to-use diagnostic tool for production process description, problem identification and improvement in small and midsize manufacturing companies, characterised by relatively small amounts of data emerging daily. The analysis of the information collected facilitate tracing down the sources of the identified production related problems and finding means for eliminating or minimising them. The statistical methodology utilised includes simple, but useful tabular and graphical techniques, such as Ishikawa's Seven Tools, but also some sophisticated exploratory data analysis methods, e.g. correspondence and cluster analysis. Furthermore, the results of PILOT constitute a good basis for developing more advanced studies, utilising statistical and/or simulation methodologies, and for setting up SPC charting information systems or designed experiments. An effective PILOT application in a midsize company manufacturing department is described for illustrative purposes.

Summary: Assesing statistical significance of correlation between distance matrices is difficult due to problems arising from nonlinearity and relationship and interdependencies between pair-wise distances in each matrix. Quadratic assignment procedure has been proposed as a valid permutation test of association between matrices. In this paper power of the quadratic assignment strategy applied to Pearson's correlation coefficient is estimated on distance matrices simulated according to Malecot's isolation by distance model. Power of the test is satisfactory for range of values of model parameter and error component variance which are often reported in literature.

Summary: Data on vehicle operating conditions have been recorded by a specially equipped car, while circulating through Naples on several typical routes, during rush hours. Traffic has been described in terms of parts of movements between two consecutive stops ("kinematic sequences"), characterized by a number of kinematic varables, such as mean velocity, driving and idling time, gear ratio, number of velocity peaks, etc. Cluster analysis was applied first to identify characteristic sequences, and second to detect the characteristic series of sequences. These series were denoted as driving cycles, and were used for characterizing different traffic intensity levels. The cycle groups were described in terms of kinematic variables, and a typical representative of each group was identified and graphicaly presented.

Summary: An experimental approach has been applied to define driving cycles characterizing driving behavior in urban traffic. Driving cycles are to be used for the evaluation of exhaust emissions from individual vehicles in traffic. Designed trips have been performed by an instrumented car in highly congested urban area of Naples. Vehicle and engine operating conditions have been recorded. Car velocity profile was analyzed in terms of kinematic sequences describing conditions between two successive stops. Series of successive sequences with homogenous characteristics were used to define, by cluster analysis, experimental driving cycles representing different traffic conditions. Results of the analysis are summarized and graphicaly presented.

Summary: Descriptive sampling has been introduced bz Saliby as a better and more appropriate alternative to traditional simple random sampling in Monte Carlo experiments. Instead of random input sample selection, in descriptive sampling (DS) values are selected in deterministic manner. On the other hand, importance sampling (IS) is a variance reduction technique in which input sample selection i controlled, but still random. The purpose of this paper is to examine the reduction in sampling bias and variance when descriptive sampling is applied in selecting input values for importance sampling. A simple Monte Carlo experiment showed that IS coupled with DS yields moderate to considerable variance reduction.

Summary: Recent Delf's results on symmetric interval eigenvalue problem are applied to twodimensional interval symmetric matrices. For symmetric interval matrices of higher dimension the results apply only to eigenvalues belonging to eigenvectors with sign pattern constant over the interval matrix. Bounds on the width of the interval matrix sufficient for the invariance of eigenvector sign pattern are hard to verify. Constraining the symmetric interval matrices to subsets of symmetric point matrices is natural for many applications. When twodimensional symmetric interval matrix is constrained to is subset containing only symmetric point matrices, it is possible to characterize the sets of its eigenvalues and eigenvectors without bounding its width. These characteriyations are a basis for the construction of interval Jacobi method.

    Author: ŠIMIĆ DIANA

    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 255
Summary: In this thesis Deif's results on symmetric interval eigenvalue problem were used to find exact bounds for eigenvalues of a twodimensional interval symmetric matrix. Results were used to define interval Jacobi method. This method does not always converge, but even in the case of divergence inclusion is guaranteed by using the Gershgorin circle theorem. Results of the numerical investigation on real matrices confirms numerical stability of the Jacobi method. Numerical investigation on interval matrices shows that method converges on small matrices even when lower and upper bounds of their elements agree in only 2-3 most significant digits. Even when exact bounds are necessary, interval Jacobi method may be used to obtain initial data on the stability of sign patterns of eigenvectors, and to obtain bounds on rounding errors when solving real symmetric eigenvalue problems which provide exact eigenvalue bounds.

Institution depot: Alfa Romeo Avio, Research and Development Department
    HW platform: VAX
    Operating system: VMS
Programming language: SAS (Base, STAT, GRAPH)
    Year: 1993
Summary: The SIMUL program is written using SAS macro language and as such is flexible and easy to use. Values of macro variables (e.g. specification limits, number of replications, etc.) could be changed before running the program. Thus, input to the program are macro variables and a SAS dataset needed for estimating regression coefficients later used in simulations. In the simulation part of the program values are drawn at random from each "uncontrollable" component distribution and combined (using the model equation) to obtain the simulated values of responses (some critical performance measures). Output from SIMUL consist of three different tables, printed for each combination of fixed variables. These are: 1. Tables of the values of PRTL, PRT, PRTH, 2. Tables of the values of predicted response (critical performance characteristics) means and standard deviations, 3. Tables of the values of expected losses due to each response and both. PRT, PRTL and PRTH are predicted probability of success, lower and higher probability limits, respectively. The losses have been included in the third table in order to take into account uncertainty of prediction. Thus, the optimal conditions could be found by minimizing expected loss, i.e. by choosing the setting of fixed variables for which expected loss is close to 0.

Summary: A large database of "kinematic sequences" has been formed from vehicle operating data recorded by a specially equipped car in highly conjested urban traffic. Data were collected following a designed experiment with driver, route and time-of-day (morning/afternoon) as factors. Original data (recorded every second) were transformed into sequence level data, where a sequence is defined as a period between two successive stops. One record in a database corresponds to one sequence. Variables (fields in the database) are different vehicle operating characteristics, such as, average velocity, number of peaks, distance covered, idling time, percentage of time in i-th gear (I=1,5), etc.

Summary: A statistical procedure has been developed to predict the probabilities of a turboshaft aeroengine to achieve prescribed performance specifications. The application is based on a statistical model that relates different relevant assembly variables to the performance measures, and on simulation experiments, that estimate the influence of the uncontorllable variables on the performance. Special attention has been given to the validity of the procedure and on the effects of the errors in measurements on the parameter estimates. Also, methods for efficient generating of dependent truncated normal random variables have been proposed and tested.

Both procedures have been validated with data collected during 1991-1993. The errors-in-varaibles model has been developed and implemented for the second type of aeroengine. The biases in the regression coefficient estimates have been estimated by simulation. The trade-off between increasing precision and minimizing risk of wrong prediction has been studied. The need for collecting new data using experimental design has been emphasized.
