Summary: This paper describes the application of caustic method
infracture mechanics for determination of stress intensity factorsof
mechanically anisotropic materials. The equation for mode Icrack opening
are expressed for optical effect in the transparentand reflective light and
applied in the given experimentalresults for standard specimen. The problem
of determination ofthe constants of caustics is solved by relating the
opticalconstant of caustics with the photoelastic constant fo theoptically
anisotropic material. This algorithm eliminates thedeficiency of a
additional criteria for choosing the prevailingstate of stresses and
strains near the crack-tip.

Summary: In this paper the analytical formulation of equations for
the shape of caustics around the crack-tip of mechanically orthotropic
matrrials has been shown. The derived formulas are valid only for the
cracks situated in the direction of one principal axis of orthotropy and
also for the case of symetrical orthotropy that is most common in praxis.
The shape of the caustic curves is obtained for three different types of
composite materials by the numerical evaluation of analytical equations.

Summary: In this paper the possibility of application
ofstereophotogrametry in the experimental stress analysis has beenstudied.
The principle of this method and its particularitieshave been described on
two experiments, in which thedisplacements of thinwalled construction (a
circular plate anddiaphragm spring) and the stress concentration have
beenmeasured. The accuracy of obtained results has been stated withthe
analysis of the method drawbacks. Finally this paper suggeststhe trends for
further improvement of this method.

Summary: The basic principles of gamma-rays-irradiation method are
presented in the paper. This method, which is used for fixation of
photoelastic effect in three-dimensional stress analysis, has several
advantages as opposed to classical freezing method. These advantages become
obvious especially in the investigations of contact and thermal stresses.
The influence of the model temperature on the level of fixed photoelastic
effect has been observed and found significant for the experimental
results.

Summary: This contribution focuses on the theoretical development of
the method of caustics and its applicability to anisotropic materials. The
method displays its full power when employed in conjunction with
interactive numerical data reduction and evaluation procedure. For the
analysis the selection of data points along the experimentally recorded
caustic curve is done automatically, the selected points are marked on the
screen and if necessary interactive correctness of the positions is
possible. Final proof of the correctness of the result of the automatic
data point selection is achieved by comparing for acceptable coincidence
the numerically generated caustic determined on the basis of the results of
the data- reduction technique with the experimentally recorded caustic.

Summary: The stress distribution around the crack-tip depends upon
the mechanical properties of the mechanically orthotropic materials. The
presented analysis of the shapes of caustics for mode I crack opening shows
the influence of mechanical characteristics and the crack orientation on
the shape of caustic curve. The solution cannot be given in the general
form and the calculation is necessary for each material separately, as the
condition for the proper interpretation of the experimental results.
