Summary: The mechanical properties of most aluminium alloys dependmarkedly on chemical composition, casting methods and heattreatment. Alloys of the G-AlMg5Si type are known for their goodcorrosion resistance and mechanical properties at elevatedtemperatures. Under the designation "Hydronalium" (Hy 511) theyare used for the production of cylinder heads for air-cooleddiesel engines. To obtain better mechanical characteristics, titanium is added to the alloy. This paper deals with the resultsobtained during investigations of the distribution of elements inbinary eutectic Mg2Si and ternary eutectic, as well as thedistribution of titanium in specimens of Hy 511 obtained duringthe casting of cylinder heads. The element distribution wasstudies using EDX/WDX spectrometry

Summary: Cooling water, when used as the coolant in the closed coolingcycle of diesel engines, is just as important as the lubricantand the fuel. Unsuitable cooling water can cause corrosion, cavitation and deposits and can therefore initiate seriousfaults. The present article considers sever corrosive damage tocylinder liners. It has been investigated by metallographic grainstructure methods and the damage may be attributed to anunsuitable method of dealing with untreated water where thetreated water is to be used for cooling purposes.

Summary: Fractured surgical implants were examined and causes of failureswere investigated. Here the results of examinations of fracturesof artifical joint endoprostheses nade from cast and forgedimplant materials are presented. In the case of fixation devicemade from cast Co-Cr-Mo alloy brittle fracture mode was observed. The failure of subject prosthesis made from stainless steel wascauses by initiation and propagation of two crack, one of thembeing a fatigue crack, which initiated at the outside surface ofthe bend and propagated across the section. On the inner surfacethe bend in the stem, there were also cracks of transgranularnature present.

    Held: from 09/23/91 to 09/27/91
Summary: An investigation has been conducted to clarify the possiblemechanisms of oxidation and corrosion of orthodontic wires.Ortodontic wires, which are produced from 316 L stainless steelare used for the mounting and holding of the active free plate, which is a correction instrument for teeth growth. Orthodonticwires can break during service life and the fracture mode isfatigue failure. The fractured surface is covered with acontaminating layer, varying in thickness. During previousinvestigations it was shown that the contaminating layer iscomposed of carbon and sputum products. The chemical compositionwas determined by using AES. During this investigation thecomposition of the surface layer on the fracture surface formedwas determined by AES. The results showed that the ptincipalconstituents of the surface layer were oxygen, sulphur, calciumand carbon.

Summary: Environments can have a much more powerful effect on corrosion ofmetals than is commonly realized either by chemical engineers orby the practizing designer or by the operator of plants, ofmachines and structures. For this reason, a significant fractionof the service failures of modern high technology equipment isdue to the environment-assisted cracking. This paper presents thephenomena and most important influential crack growth, particulary stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue. More particular attention need to be done prevent stresscorrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue during all stages ofequipment manufacture and operation, from the early stages ofmanufacuring to the final stage of steady state operation andshutdown. The principles of devloping rigorous design equationswhich can be used with confidence by the design community arementioned too.

Summary: Since the first use of chromium nickel molybdenum steels forimplants in the thirties rapid progress has been made in thedevelopment of stainless steels. Until today these improvementshave scarcely been taken into consideration by material standardsfor implants. In agreement with the characteristic potentials forlokalized corrosion a statistical evaluation of failures showsthat pitting, crevice corrosion and corrosion fatigue as a resultfrom the latter can easily be avided by higher contents ofchromium and molybdenum. Steels in accordance with theserequirements are specified in all standards and would solely fromthe economic point of view justify their use.
Keywords: materials standards for implantats, stainless steel, pitting corrosion
