    Journal: Journal of Ship Research
    Number: 3
    Volume: 38
    Year: 1994
    Pages: from 225 to 238
    Language: engleski
Summary: Cubic dynamical systems are of great interest in marine technology. The state of the art concerning ship rolling and vessel mooring is described. Time-domain simulation is an indirect and unreliable way to determine harmonic response characteristics of nonlinear systems; frequency-domain analysis is therefore preferable. Numerical methods for deterministic and random oscillations are aproximate. In order to establish a general sophisticated method, the well-known harmonic balance method is extended to polyharmonic excitation and improved to operate completely in the frequency domain. Special recurrent and simultaneous algorithms are given for the case of monoharmonic and polyharmonic excitation and multi- and single-valued response respectively. Subharmonic oscillations are analyzed using the general method. Random oscillations are treated as a set of periodic responses caused by the same excitation spectrum and different phase angles. Illustrative examples are chosen from marine technology practice. Principal, superharmonic and subharmonic response spectra are analyzed. The importance of further research which would cover other nonlinear effects by harmonic alalysis is pointed out.

Summary: Nonlinear oscillations of dynamical systems with a quadratic restoring force, subjected to monoharmonic and polyharmonic excitation are analysed by employing the harmonic balance method. The method is improved in such a way that the system of nonlinear algebraic equations is derived in an explicit form and solved directly in the frequency domain. Two algorithms are given, i. e. the reccurent and simultaneous one in the case of monoharmonic and polyharmonic excitation respectively. Random oscillations are treated as a set of periodic responses caused by the same spectral excitation with random phase angles. The statistical analysis of responses gives insight into the degree of the nonlinear random process nonstationarity. The quadratic dynamical model is used to simulate the behaviour of moored vessels. The response of a vessel subjected to the monoharmonic, polyharmonic and random wave excitation of the first and second order and their coupling is analysed by employing the numerical methods described above.

Summary: A design procedure of contemporary ship structure is impossiblewithout effective software support. The most time consuming partof the ship design is structural analysis which gives the basefor approval of the ship by classification societies or someother authorities. Very complex numerical models have beendeveloped to take into consideration all natural phenomenonpresent in the model describing the ship sailing in sea waves. The paper presents a state-of-the-art rewiew of the methodologiesand software support in this area. An illustrative exapmle isdescribed.

Summary: The method of time domain simulation in marine structure responseanalysis on sea waves is frequently used. This is a common toolwhen the response statistics are estimated of the non-linear 2nd order motions of a moored vessel in random sea. The moored marinestructure in that case is modelled as a 2nd order dynamic systemsubjected to a stationary Gaussian sea and the random seastate is represented as a sum of harmonic components with random phases. Some investigations found such methods to be incorrect. Thealternative method is the spectrum analysis which is the Fourieranalysis of the stochastic process. But when the model isnon-linear, statistical linearisation or the higher momentspectrum must be introduced to show the characterstics ofnon-linear process.

Summary: The exact solution of the differential equation of motion ofa single degree of freedom system with cubic forces in the formof a combination of different displacement, velocity andacceleration exposed to a periodic excitation, is determineddirectly in the frequency domain. For this purpose, thewell-known harmonic balance method is improved. A system ofnon-linear algebraic equations is derived in an explicit form andsolved by a recurrent and simultaneous procedure for the case ofmonoharmonic and polyharmonic excitation respectively. Inaddition, the latter procedure is employed to analyse the randomoscillations caused by a periodic excitation with different phaseangles. Some non-linear effects are illustrated within numericalexamples, as for instance jumping phenomenon and nonstationarityof deterministic and random response.

Summary: An improved methodology for decision making concept design level is presented. A multiatribute approach was preferred to multiobjective one in the complex and conflicting decision makingenvironment such as fishing vessel concept design. Each attributewas defined through membership grade function based on fuzzy set theory. The consistent relative significance of attributes is obtained as an eigenvector of subjective decision making matrix and used as weighting factor. Inadequate information about configuration of feasible designs subspaces is overcome by randomgeneration of design points in feasible region (Monte Carlo method). The concept of nondominated points was used forfiltering efficient (Pareto) solutions. Selection among efficientsolutions is performed by the goal programming approach. Themathematical model of trawler was developed based on analyticaland statistical formulations and was included as a stand-alonemodule in the decision making system.

Summary: Design of fast passenger vessels means taking care of manyconflicting requirements which influence both profitability forthe operator and comfort for passengers. Solving these problemsleads to multiattribute approach. Since some of the attributesare subject to uncertainty by their nature, a fuzzy set approachis adopted for some constraints and goals evaluation as well asfor solving the problem of attribute normalization. All feasibledesigns, i.e. passing all constraints control, are subject to aprocess of search for nondominated solutions (Pareto-optimal)among which the final design will be selected by subjectivedecision-making techniques. The mathematical model specializedfor fast passenger vessels comprises the following elementsČ freevariables and parameters definition, operating scenarioselection, hull form description, hydrostatics, freeboard andstability control, weight and center of gravity, resistance andpowering, seakeeping criteria, cost and economyevaluation, volumes, areas and linear dimensions utilizationinclusive of hull subdivision and evaluation of constraints andgoals. Procedures for these calculations were tuned to conceptlevel design and a good portion of those had to be developed fromscratch. Usage of the procedure is demonstrated on a inter-islandpassenger ferry.

Summary: An improved methodology for CAD process at the concept designstage of fishing vessels design using multicriterialdecision-making techniques is presented. The goal of providingthe the achievment of more efficient fishing vessels is supportedby an user-friendly procedure based on a synthesis module thatinvolves an identification of design criteria, design attributes(goals), and design constraints, in terms of design variables. This module includes three techniques of decision-making:construction of value function, lexicographical optimization andgoal seeking approach. A trawler design model was developed andchecked for consistency by determining two stern trawlers whosedesign goals differ in endurance range and propulsion plantpower, while the other design requirements ramain unchanged. Thefollowing goals are identified in the decision-making procedure:pull at given trawling speed, free running speed, available fishhold volume, weight of a fuel for a fishing trip, light shipweight. The code has been structured so as to simplify theselection among a set of nondominated design alternatives fordifferent requirements according to designer's subjectivedecision-making, thus providing a consistent technical basis forpreliminary design.

Summary: The improved harmonic balance method and the harmonic acceleration method for solution of differential equation of motion of cubic dynamical systems in the frequency and time domain are described. Since the former method is almost exact and the latter approximate, in order to evaluate reliability of the latter method a correlation analysis is performed. Response of a cubic system in the symetry breaking region, as the first step in the transition to chaos, where the both methods are operable, is determined. The harmonic acceleration method is found to be a sophisticated tool for the time integration.

Summary: The definition of chaos as a multiharmonic response of a nonlinear dynamic system subjected to monoharmonic excitation is extended to random oscillations. Depending on the nonlinearity, a narow band excitation may cause a wide band response spectrum. This is illustrated in the case of rolling motion of an intact and a damaged ship exposed to regular and irregular wave excitation. The influence of random phase angles in spectral excitation on the stationarity of response spectrum is analysed.

Summary: Vibration analysis may be successfully performed by the finite element method using 2D and 3D models of complete ship structure. Since such an analsys is very time comsuming, it is used only for final analyses. In early design stage, when the global ship response is considered, the complete ship hull may be represented by 1D model. However, its classical application is limited to lower natural modes. In order to cover needs of propeller excited forced vibration and to increase the accuracy of beam model, vibration properties, such as hull stiffness, added mass and damping, are specified as modal quantities.

Summary: A great interest about catamarans in recent years emphasized attention on investigations of the hydrodynamic characteristics.A very complex interaction between two cylinders which oscillate togather in waves results for some frequencies in peculiar hydrodynamic reaction forces, e.i. hydrodynamic coefficients - added mass and damping coefficients. The method applied in this work to compute the hydrodynamic forces on multiple cylinders is based on discrete models. These methods, although very general with respect to topological form of the problem are not so common in ship hydrodynamic praxis. The main reason is the size of the model which includes besides the wetted surface also a part of fluid domain and its bound what results in a larger system of linear equations. On the other side by means of these methods - the finite element method and combined source and bipod methods, the problem may be modelled more accurate.

Summary: Mathematical design model of the fast catamaran is presented. The model is intended to be included in the multi criteria decision making design shell at the level of concept design. Empirical and analytical methods for predicting vessel;s properties are developed as a set of sub-tasks treating problems of hull form, hydrostatics, resistance, powering, seakeeping, space utilization, cost estimating, economy prediction etc. Design constraints of different types are included. A method for solving the equality constraint has been devised. Attributes needed for the multicriteria decision making are evaluated. Definition of the aspiration levels and normalization are based on fuzzy set theory. Less known procedures specialy developed for the catamaran design model are described in more detail.

Summary: The paper presents the analytical method for determining optimal number of cranes in a workshop of the shipyard. This method is based on the theory of mass servicing. A short description of basic concept, priciples and limitations of this theory is given. The adequate mathematical model is created in the concrete examples of the mass servicing system (MSS). On the basis of this mathematical model, the quantitative characteristics for all variants of MSS are defined and analyzed. Finaly the most important quantitative characteristics, basic parameters of the optimization goals and optimal solution for analyzed variants are presented and discussed.

    Held: from 05/24/95 to 05/25/95
Summary: A proposal for the concept design model of the catamaran fishing vessel is presented. The model is suitable for the multi criteria decision making approach similar to the one previously applied to monohull trawlwer design. The model is aimed at the fast displacement hull forms. The general idea is to increase speed of the Adriatic/type fishing vessel from the present 9-11 knots range to the 12-20 knots range and to analyze the feasibility of the vessel. In order to predict the principal particulars of the catamaran fishing vessel, approximate empirical and analytical methods were adapted based on the very limited data base of existing vessels. The initial version was applied to the task of designing 20 m fishing catamaran.

Summary: Paper deals with the concept development and feasibility study of a large catamaran designed for the fast sea transport of passengers and vehicles in the medium-range Mediterranean routes, intended to be more profitable than present fast monohulls. The concept design was carried out by means of a multiattribute decision-making procedure to generate and select the 'best possible solution'. Two variants of the selected design were then submitted to feasibility study, assuming that the machinery will either be ofthe gas-turbine type for the faster solution or of the diesel type for the slower alternative suitable to carry trucks also in the off-season. An economic trade-off study was accomplished to compare the investment worth of the projected catamaran with the Aquastrada fast monohull.

Summary: The mathematical model of fast RO-RO ship is structured to describe main design aspects. Preliminary analysis of hull forms within predicted size and speed limits, provides initial design guidance. Deck area utilization for loading/unloading of trailers is modelled. Intact and damaged stability are accounted for. Added resistance and other dynamic effects are taken from systematic seakeeping calculations. Power prediction is tuned on regression analysis of experimental data. Structural design study provides insight into weight breakdown and into location of center of gravity. Analysis of potential traffic flow in Mediterranean area serves as a basis for ship specifications. Data of port and shipyard facilities are addresed as constraints. Although emphasis is on technical design rather than economics, the set of feasible and efficient non-dominated ship designs provides a basis for technical decision related to the resultant economic consequences.

Summary: Da bi se uspješno riješio problem čvrstoće dvotrupaca potrebno je odrediti pored statičkog i valno opterećenje. Pored toga je potrebno izvršiti proračun njihanja na pravilnim harmonijskim valovima. Njihanje broda je objašnjeno modelom radijacije i difrakcije. Rješenjem prvog dijela dobijamo dodatnu masu i hidrodinamičko prigušenje, a rješenjem drugog dijela dobijamo uzbudnu silu na tijelo. Za beskonačno dugi cilindar to je dvodimenzionalni problem opisan Laplaceovom diferencijalnom jednadžbom i pripadnim rubnim uvjetima. Problem je riješen metodom konačnih elemenata.

Summary: The main consideration of this study is the research offollowing features of propeller-hull interaction: non-uniforminflow in the propeller plane, spanwise blade loadingdistribution, nonstationary propeller shaft forces and hullsurface pressure fluctuations. As input for their assessmentroutine model test results are used. In order to evaluate thehull form and propeller design, obtained results are undergoing afurther correlation analysis with appropriate criteria forexcitation limits. The presented procedure is illustrated on anumerical example of a series 60 model ship for which detailedexperimental and computational data were available.

Title: APPLICATION OF FINITE ELEMENT METHOD IN ANALYSIS OF HYDRODYNAMIC REACTION

    Authors:
    Ljulj, Andrija
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: In this article, the finite element method is applied for solvingthe hydrodynamic reaction of are oscillatory rigid body motion instill water. In the linear version of the problem we introducedsome assumptions : motion is simple harmonic, square term isneglected, fluid is idealised and irrotational. In this moment, the method is used only for solving classical forms. Next step isto apply this method on complicate forms, bottom effect andsemihull vessels.

Title: Reliability Based Automated Design of Ship and Marine Structures

    Authors:
    Žanić, Vedran (77913)
    Language: engleski
Summary: A design method for concept level of structural design is presented. The design method includes an analysis module and a synthesis module. The analysis module contains: design load definition procedure, response calculation via simplified FE model, feasibility check via ultimate strength criteria, reliability analysis, attribute value calculation blocks. Thesynthesis module is based on adaptive generation of designs in the feasible region. The concept of non-dominated points is used for filtering efficient (Pareto) solutions which are then usedfor an adaptive generation of further nondominated designs.Selection among efficient solutions is performed by the goalprogramming approach. A design model is run on the engineeringRISC workstation connected to the computing surface fot parallel processing. Simplified FE models and AFOSM reliability assesmentsare found to be sufficient for selection of non-dominateddesigns.

    Authors:
    Čorić, Većeslav (77520)
    Language: engleski
Summary: In this article a theoretical method is presented for estimating the response statistics of a marine structure that can be modeled as a second and third-order dynamics system subjected to a stationary, Gaussian forcing input signal. The problem formulation expresses the response in terms of a second and third-order Volterra series. The method is particularly suitable for predict- ing extreme responses in the following marine problems: - ship rolling - heaving of the ships with non-vertical walls - swaying response of the moored marine structure - second order wave force
