Summary: This project consists of three main parts (principal investigators: (A-V. Čorić, B-I. Senjanović, C-V. Žanić) and grouped into two projects (1-part B, 2-parts A and C). A-Ship Oscillations on Waves and Loading of Floating Objects The classification of problems of motions and loading calculations of ships on waves on the basis of linear theory. Ordering of existing software on the common data basis. For the solution of problems of swaying and rolling of ships and their anchoring a nonlinear theory has been devloped. For the determination of loading of single and multy hull slender bodies on waves the numerical modelling of the hydrodynamic forces of the 1st and 2nd order was performed. The procedure for determination of loading on ship structure caused by underwater explosion, is analysed. The effects of shock wave and the gaseous bubble products of such explosion, are treated separately. For determination of propeller-hull interaction the non-uniform wake in the plane of propeller, unsteady harmonics of propeller forces and hull-surface pressure fluctuations are analysed. Numerical methods of calculation are developed. B- Response (Strength and Vibrations) of Ship Structures For determination of normal and shear stress distribution over open and closed ship's cross-sections and their flexural, shear, torsional and warping stiffness, a higher-order theory of thin walled girders has been developted. A coresponding computer program for calculation of that stiffness and of the longitudinal vibrations of ship's hull of higher-orders has been worked out.In the analaysis of the transient and nonlinear vibrations of ship's hull new harmonic acceleration method is developed and the well-known harmonic balanse method has been improved. These methods are applied to solve the problem of the ship's stability in rough sea. C- The Assesment of Structural Safety (Reliability) is based on integration of the following mathematical models : stohastic loading model, FEM calculation of structural response, deterministic safety check procedure, calculation of ultimate strength failure modes, nonlinear procedure for determination of collapse load, reliability calculation. They are used for multicriterial decision making via the adaptive generation of hippersurface of non-dominated designs (based on the Monte Carlo method). Note: From 1991 until 1994 the principal researcher of the project was Prof.D.Sc.Josip Uršić.

Keywords: hydrodynamic forces, numerical methods, slender bodies, loading of ship structures, underwater explosion, shock wave, wake field, propeller shaft excitation forces, thin walled girders, effective stiffness, nonlinear vibration, harmonic acceleration method, theory of chaos, ship capsizing, safety, reliability, simulation methods, multicriterial optimisation, Monte Carlo procedure.

Research goals: The development of numerical methods for calculation of loading on floating objects of arbitrary configurations by regular and irregular sea waves. Developing the procedure for checking ship's structure endurance to loads caused by underwater explosion. The development of method for determination of propeller exciting forces for ship's vibration calculations.Improvment of the procedure for calculations of vibrations and stability of ship.To develop the procedure for the design of more economical ship structures (of less weight and price) with reliability and safety in the prescribed limits.
