Summary: The existing way of making technical specification, ordering andwarehousing of plates is described in an attempt to improve thesefunctions by increased typification of plates. For this purpose,a computer program that simulates all phases of operation withplates is made, enabling thus the choice of the optimum variantfor a specified level of typification. Based on the results ofthe computer analysis, diagrams showing the dependence of thetotal price of plate manipulation, from the moment of orderingtill the beginning of working out, on the typification level, aremade. The optimum level of plate typification and thecorresponding manner of warehousing can, thus, be determined, andthe savings in price and time ensured.

Meeting: Simpozij "In memoriam Leopold Sorta" 1992.
    Held: from 10/22/92 to 10/24/92
Summary: The ships hull elements fabrication process rests on theapprehension of logical substance and logical structure ascomponents jointed into an integral whole. One should appreciate, however, that neither of the logic happens to possess the sameexistential, or objective, value. Now and then, either due to a requirement that two newbuildingsbe developed simultaneously, or due to production organizationinefficiencies within previous stages, and/or other drawbacks inthe process, its adequate organization/management may becomedifficult to establish. The principal ensuing problem in such cases appears to be how tomanage a given work quantity within a given period, with relyingupon available sources and a suitable choice of work plan. This study of such problems has been based on a systemic approachin examination of possibilities as to realisation of planned workby application of activities animation technique. The studyprocess rest on restructuring of the decision making rules to bemade at the management level.

Summary: Polymer materials have been fully recognized in the last twodecades. Today are not thought-of as substitute or standardmaterials. Due to their specific properties, a rapidtechnological progress within many branches of the economy hasbeen made, that would have been impossible in many cases withoutpolymers. Being fire-proof the polimers are used as construction materialsin marine industry. However, more frequent demands forlightweight materials which have all physical properties ofstandard, have caused that all research works has been aimed atmodification of polymers for shipbuilding applications. The application of polymer materials and our experiments onradiation crosslinker plasticised PVC pipes, with improvedproperties for shipbuilding industry has been presented in thispaper.

Summary: Polymer materials have been fully recognized in the last two decades. Today are not thought of as substitute gor standard materials. Due to their specific properties, a rapid technological progress within many branches of the economy has been made, that would have been impossible in many cases without polymers. Being fire-proof the polymers are used as construction materials in marine industry. However, more frequent demands for lightweight materials which have all physical properties of standard, have caused that all research works has been aimed at modification of polymers for shipbuilding applications. The application of polymer materials and our experiments on radiation crosslinker plasticised PVC pipes with improved properties for shipbuilding industry has been presented in this paper.

Summary: All materials are subject to aging and corrosion in space and time depending on their specific properties. Aging and corrosion are affected by the environmental influences. Those processes for majority of materials can be defined as unintentional wear of material caused by physical, chemical, mechanical and biologic impact from the environment, while for a small number of materials those influences does not affect the change of properties. Evaluation of aging is based on surveying the change of appearance, chemical and physical properties which makes possible defining the degree of aging. Accurate predicting of durability of complex formulations which contain besides polymer stabilizers, fillers, plasticisers, is difficult to determine without systematic testing of natural and accelerated aging. However, one of the basic problems is a correlation between the results obtained by accelerated testings and those gained through natural aging.

Summary: The increasing applications of polymers in shipbuilding give rise to a series of new technological issues and possibilities. However, in the shipbuilding the sever criteria have been imposed to structural, installation and other materials regarding their properties, persistence etc. Therefore, the efficient education of personnel is needed to enable them to perform all installation and mounting of polymers according to the technical requirements. After considering the existing educational programmes for shipbuilding occupations it seems obvious that they are very insufficient and do not correspond to the requirements imposed by the increasing polymer applications.

Summary: The efficient expert systems for reasoning about complex physical systems together with methods for automatic synthesis of models and learning, represent the new class of second generation expert systems. These techniques will enable the development of tools which are necessary for reasoning about systems in complex, for now not always suitable domains. Thereby not only that hard problems from such domains will be solved more easily, but the expert systems for a wide class of industrial problems, ranging from prognosis and diagnosis to control of industrial processes will become more feasible. In this paper some ideas for application of mentioned techniques in the complex domain of shiprepair and shipbuilding are presented.

Summary: All the materials are subject to ageing in space and time depending upon the specific characteristics. The ageing is affected by the ambient aggressiveness and corrosion processes. These effects may be defined for a major number of materials as an unintentional wear of the material due to physical, chemical, mechanical and biological ambient influence resulting in the change of the characteristics. The corrosion processes occur in expressively aggressive environments, and with respect to the characteristics of observed materials, they bring to a partial or complete decay of the product. The testing of the polymer materials and procedures of protection enables to obtain materials with new characteristics as for the resistance and durability are concerned, and in such a way also to widen their application as new materials. The paper reviews in particular the development of the Testing station for natural ageing and corrosion of materials in a site near Split.

Summary: Radiation crosslinking of PVC pipes in the presence of polyfunctional monomer was investigated. Patterns of pipes were produced and irradiated with gamma ray. The resistance of crosslinked PVC pipes to internal pressure was measured at 80řC and compared with resistance of noniradiated PVC pipes. The survey on possibilities of application of PVC pipelines and the application of polymeric materials in maritime industry, as well as conditions to acquire rights for manufacture of products according to IACS (International Association of Classification Societies) requirements, have been given in this paper. Simultaneously there are requirements for lighter materials of the same physical characteristics as classical materials which is attained by modifications of the existing polymers for marine environment.

Summary: Advanced integrated technological systems of nowadays in production processes for highly complex products, require a carefully planned and design preparation system as an unavoidable and vitally important element. Locating and analysing of bottle necks within the ship construction process seems to be one of the most complex problem in production management. The bottle necks' expected occurrence in this industrial process appears hard to prove outside actual realization of the process, that is to say apart from their actual occurrence. This research has been focused on discovering eventual patterns under which bottle necks are likely to occur within he ship construction production process, the research instrument applied being a ship hull structure material design for production system.
