Summary: A solar pond is a body of liquid which collects solar energy andstore it as a heat. A solar pond is a relatively inexpensivesolar collector and thermal storage device. Operating costs for solar ponds are low when compared to fossil fuel devicis. Thesolar pond is an artificial black-bottom pond as lake one to twometers deep in which convection is prevented by having a strongdensity gradient from the bottom to the top. The gradient isobtained by having a high concentration of suitable salts. Itis necessary to analyzed climate characteristics in Croatiaconnected by these ponds and to establish types of solar pondswhich correspond to these characteristics.

Keywords: solar energy, pond, salt gradient, density of water, storagezone, thermal, heat extraction, heat exchanger, liner, membrane, meteorological factors

Research goals: The goal or research is to find an effective way of heat extraction in solar ponds in the climate conditions of Croatia (continental and adriatic part) with the lowest operating costs an to prove that these solar collectors are more convenient than other similar ways of thermal sources for all the same applications.Solar energy is not a medicament for all energy problems but it covers about (15%) of the world energy. One may expect that the climate conditions of Croatia are convenient for an effective way of heating from the solar ponds. The storage of water may be used for heating of spaces, dewatering of agricultural lands, different heat in the production and obtaining of electrical energy.
