Summary: The book "Designing and construction of railways" is
intended for students of Civil ingineering, but it can be very usefull for
builders who are engeged in designing, construction and maintance of
railway. In the first Chapter and in few follow Chapters it is written
about general characteristic of railways, railway vehicles and complex task
of railway designing. It is alsow written about designing of single track
reconstruction, second track annex and designing of high speed track. In
Chapters which analyze the track construction specialy accept is put on
specifity of railway objects with review on construction, maintance,
consolidateing, covering and sanation measures of track substructure and
protection of the environment.

Summary: A procedure for the selection of the horizontal curve
radiuses onrailway lines to be reconstructed with the aim of
achievinghigher velocities is prezented. Forst, the selection of theminimum
radius with regard to safety and cost-efficiency isanalised. In the second
part of the paper, the methodologicalprocedure of optimum train speed
determination is explained,wihich is directly related to the selection of
the optimum radiusto be applied for the reconstruction.

Summary: In this paper terms for distribution of stations in
planingrailway network in urban and suburban districts are analysed.After
determing spheres of influence at railroad, i.e. zones ofinfluence at

Summary: Safe and undisturbed moving of trains on the rails
requestsexistance of certain surrounding area underneath as well as
abovethem. Within such area no distrubances (structures, rail gearsetc.)
should be present there. On the rails the difference ismade between the
loading, kinematic and free guages which arecontributing to the definition
of the referred area. This articleis to give analysis of the said gauges
showing so their mutualposition as well as zones between them. The
kinematic guage is tobe especially alaborated since it reprezent the basis
for thefree gauge to be determined. Therefore, details on the
basickinematic measures will be supplied such as: vehicle derailmenton
curves (S), quasi static shifting (Q) caused by the sidewardinclination of
vehicle and safety interspace (M).

Summary: Theselection of the optimal solution is a very complex
process indecision making, which implies the selection and
precisedefinition of criteria. Since there is no uniform criterion forthe
selection of the optimal solution (as various users havedifferent, and
often conflicting, requirements) it is necessaryto select and define
precisely several criteria. The methodologyto be used shuold take into
account all the possible aspects ofthe problem. The PROMETHEE and GAIA
methods make it possible toinclude all the criteria in a precisely defined
way. ThePROMETHEE method makes is possible to include the criteria in
the"authentic" units, and thus it eliminates the laborious and
oftenerroneous process of reduction of criteria to a common unit. Thispaper
analyzes in detail the aplication of the metnioned methodin the evaluation
of the projects of traffic infrastructure.

Summary: The section Knin-Split has a great importance for the
social andeconomis development of the Middle Dalmatia region. It
reprezentsat the same time, the only exist connection between theconsidered
area and other parts of Croatia and Europe. After ananalysis of the section
it can be said that because of itsspreading along an extremly rough
terrain. extreme valoues(horizontal and vertical) of the alignment have
been used. Thepresented factors significantly influence both the
transportationand flow capacity of the considered section and the
travellingtime between the sub-seetions as well as the safety and comfortof
the traffic. The paper presents an analysis of the currentstate on the
railroad under study (review of the applied elementsof horizontal and
vertical railroad route, the number ofstructures and of the road crosings
etc.). The graph, coveringthe period from 1970. to 1990. presents the main
indicators ofthe intensity for both freight and passengers traffic.

Summary: Bringing into harmony limited possibility and groving
necessity,especially at traffic infrastructure extension, shows need
forleading a rational investment politics, that should be closedwith the
basic principle of rentability: investments must befollowed with proper
tehnical and economical effects and theymust be compensated with
exploitation savings in determined time.At researching justifiability of
extension in prexis,justifiability of deposit in single investment programs
istheoretical researched, i.e., single initial investments whereanalyzed.
Such solutions can't give full econommicwarrantableness. With the increase
of traffic necessity,capacities become exploited, and need additional
investments forincreasing by degrees. Those solutions, in principle, are
showingthe best rentability. Besides there is a question: When adds
aninvestment to make economical optimum? This paper showstheoretcal and
methodical optimization of the repeated investmentthat are usually used for
traffic infrastructure extension.

Summary: The priority task of railroad reconstruction and
modernization is to increase their capacity or rather to decrease the
transportation costs. The selection of transportation means is greatly
influenced by "the general transportation cost" - it is a parameter which
synthesizes by itself many other factors (costs, travel time, etc.). In
principle, any investment in the reconstruction and modernization increases
the transport demand because it decreases difficulties which existed in
previous situations. Consequently, rational solutions should be sought in
stage extension which brings into accordance the increased traffic needs
and capacities. Evidently that the intervention in modernization of
railroads and harbors brings about positive changes in the network by
increasing and logically distributing the traffic flows. The evaluation of
the suggested intervention can be provided by "cost-benefit" analysis which
should be adapted to the present state. The costs on the network can be
established by a test "with and without" modernization. Each proposed
modernization project can be estimated from the difference between the
costs effects. The suggested proposed modernization project can be

procedure is espscially suitable in assessing the possibility of
modernization in stages for complex tasks which is particularly important
for the decision-maker. In order to answer this complex question, it is
necessary to establish the influence of the zones on the network caused by
any positive planned change. Finally, the gravitation areas of sea ports
can be reliably determined by applying the above factors and according to
the actual costs analysis.

Summary: The transportation of goods are vital part of the country's
economy without regard to the level of economic development. The rapid
growth of economy and the improvement of the living standards lead to an
increase in the production and consumption of goods consequently. The
location of railway container terminals and designing of apron space is not
a static process but develops with changes in technology of goods movement:
advance in design of transportation vehicle, development of traffic
network, improvement of the loading-unloading facilities, containerization
of goods. The current trend is to retain the same number of container
terminals and to find such locations that allow the expansion of the
required areas without limiting the development of the places in whose
vicinity they are located. The design of such terminals is not an easy task
since it involves optimal exploatation of all types of transportation means
and their combination. The processing of these data by computer makes it
possible to form a sound basis for developing the final program for solving
these problems (bottleneck). Cosequently, the experts engaged in railway
transportation working together with specialists from other transportation
fields will be called upon to find the most efficient solutions for these
problems.
