Summary: The paper deals with the procedure for numerical solution of thesoil consolidation problem. The theoretical background of the procedure is given within theframework of Biot's theory of consolidation. Unlike the usualapproach, the displacement of the soil skeleton and thedisplacement of the pore fluid relative to the skeleton aredefined as the main field variables. Besides, a generalstress-strain constitutive equation for soil skeleton is allovedfor. Finite element formulation is given by means of Galerkin methodusing the weak formulation. Time discretization includes explicitand implicit schemes.

Summary: The paper deals with the selection of materials for the sealing layer in the final cover of sanitary landfills. The sealing layer is the most critical component of the final cover. Its role is to minimize percolation of water through the final cover. Materials used for the construction of the sealing layer are either of mineral origin (compacted clay) or geosynthetic (geomembrane). They are most often used in combination creating composite liners. Recently alternative materials are also used like paper mill sludge or discarded swelling clay.

    Held: from 04/26/93 to 04/28/93
Summary: Results are presented of an effort to reveal and understandmechanisms that led to the behavior of the 20 years old and 47,5m high earth-rockfill dam evidenced by long term crestsettlements, horizontal displacements, cracking and tilting, aswell as foundation soil settlements. In this respect acomprehensive and detailed analysis of recorded histories ofembankment surface displacements and foundation settlements hasbeen undertaken. Stability of earth dams is usually evaluated by consideringpotential failure modes taking into account appropriatemechanical behavior of embankment and foundation materials, aswell as imposed loads. By this example it is shown that stabilityof an old dam can also be evaluated by a proper analysis of longterm observation data. The proposed procedure anables stabilityanalyses with the same loading conditions as the ones required bystandard procedures. Since this procedure requires nosimplifications used in standard analyses, it is considered to bemore reliable.

    Held: from 10/05/94 to 10/08/94
Summary: This paper describes behaviour of an embankment crossing the sea bay on the island of Pag. The construction of embankment had begun in 1977 and was finished in 1978. As it is built on weak soil, nonwoven fabrics was layed between the embankment and the soil in order to support its stability. The fabrics used was a nonwoven, needlepunched polypropylene. The embankment was instrumented with settlement plates and piezometers. Periodic readings were taken to determine the behaviour of the embankment and to prevent undesirable events. Unfortunatly, shortly after the embankment was finished most of the instruments were destroyed, making all photographs and used a level to monitor elevation changes. Portions of the embankment above deepest weak layer settled more than one meter. In spite of this and of heavier traffic during the recent war, no instability phenomena were observed, which proved that the laying of fabric is an efficient technique of passing over the difficult subsoil conditions.

Summary: Permeability measurements of laboratory prepared clay samples is presented. Permeability measurementsa were carried out in a computer controlled triaxial testing system by using so called flow-pump technique. The flow-pump technique allows for more precise flow and therefore more precise permeability measurements than in conventional test. Test results shows that almost all permeability values are less then 10e-7 cm/s, that complies with the criteria stated for clay layers of sanitary lundfields. Suggested are some modifications in standard flow-pump procedure.

Summary: Permeability measurements were conducted on undisturbed cla samples with the laboratory flow-pump test. The test is performed in a computer controlled triaxial testing system. A triaxial cell is introduced to confine the samples, and full saturation of samples is ensured by appling a constant level of back pressure. Permeability is measured by introducing water at known constant flow rates into the base of thw specimen with a flow-pump, and by monitoring the head difference induced across the length of the specimen with sensitive transducers. The flow-pump technique allows for more precise flow and therefore more precise permeability measurements than conventional "falling-head" test. The experiment duration is much shorter and because of that the seepage induced consolidation is negligible.

Summary: Within the framework of municipal solid waste management it is necessary to construct sanitarylandfills. This task has by no means interdisciplinary feature but with pronounced geotechnical role. The main problems to be solved are, among the other problems, settlements and stability of waste material in the landfill. In relation to these problems the paper deals with the mechanical behaviour of municipal solid waste. Classical soil mechanics approach is addopted but the differences between the soil behaviour and waste behaviuor are emphasized. Using some published data from the literature several experimental procedure for the determination of shear strength parameters are presented. It is concluded that there is every reason to introduce the term "waste mechanics".

Summary: Sanitary landfill is considered as an earth structure. The paper discusses the issue of impermeability of the clay barriers within the criterion for the achievement of maximum density of cohesive soil. This criterion which is usually applied in geotechnical assignments needs to be modofied due to the requirement on the valeu of maximum allowedhydraulic conductivity of a lay barrier. In relation to this requirement the paper stresses the importance of an effective method for hydraulic conductivity measurement in the laboratory as well as in the field. The issue of the chemical interaction between leachate and clay is underlined in connection to the possible deterioration of clay properties.

Summary: Waste disposal does not belong entirely to any of the traditional engineering disciplines. The reason is that, until recently, waste disposal was not considered to be a major problem in the society and cosequently it did not attract adequate attention. Today when the quantity of waste has enormously increased and when the society has become aware of the adverse impactof different waste materials, new methods of waste disposal are being sought. These methods should protect the environment for a long period of time. The problems which are encountered in these activities are of interdisciplinary character and new methods for their solution should be sought in several traditional engineering fields. The approach to the solution of waste disposal problems will remain the same until new engineers are educated according to the needs of waste management. The technology developed in geotechnical engineering has an important role in the solution of environmental problems and it should be considered in their solution. The paper offers a review of such problems and the appropriate methods of solution from the field of geotechnical engineering. Apart from the description of the existing methods which could be applied directly, the paper points to the problems for which no readily available solution exist. Therefore additional research is needed and new methods should be developed for their solution.

Summary: The paper presents results of a stress-strain analysis in the foundation soil beneath wharf No. 5 in Ploča harbour due to fill load on the adjacent depot. Initial stresse on the foundation soil were determined under drained conditions, while stresses due to fill load on the depot were calculated assuming undrained conditions. Soil - wharf structure interaction was taken into account. Soft foundation clays were modeled by an elastoplastic constitutive equation. It was shown that the presented analysis gives realistic displacements and stresses in the foundation soil and the wharf structure.

Summary: Regional characteristics of Dubrovnik and Montenegro zones of the Adriatic coast are the existence of block paleoslides and the occurence of strong earthquakes. Rock blocks on the flysch slope are found at present. Various buildings are constructed on some blocks. The aim of the paper is to analyse recent state of block stability and the possibility of reactivation of landslide due to earthquake. The clear differentiation of the engineering geology elements of the slopes, which represent the area of high contrast of physiacl and mechanical characteristics, follows the hydrogeological division on permeable and impermeable rocks. The possible sliding surfaces were once the mechanical active planes and at the same time are border-lines between two geotechnical media - the rock block and the quasiplastic base. The flysch complex is adopted as the seismic footwall. The paper includes stability analysis under seismic conditions with the parameters of the montenegro earthquake in 1979.

Summary: The analysis of the mechanical interaction of water-tight cantilever diaphragm and dam body included the nonlinear stress-strain analyses of the earth dam. The analyses in several stages encountered the estimate of initial stresses in the dam, excavation of the upper ten meters (during dam crest reconstruction), the placement of the diaphragm, reconstruction of the dam crest and the raising of water level in the reservoir. The analyses are compatible with the planned design actions in dam reconstruction. The parametric study covered the range of expected stiffness and strength parameters of the earth materials and the material of diaphragm, as well. The numerical analyses using the finite element method were performed considering the elastoplastic behaviour and nonlinear relationships between the effective stresses and stiffness or strength of earth materials. The computer program FLAC was used in analyses which enables solving of such complex deformation problems in geotechnics.

Summary: Results are presented of an effort to reveal and understandmechanisms that led to the behavior of the 47 m high Mahabad damembankment evidenced by longterm crest settlements, horizontaldisplacements, cracking, and tilting, as well as foundation soilsettlements. On the basis of a comprehensive analysis ofavailable observational data, and a review of MonthlyConstruction Reports, it was concluded that long term embankmentdisplacements were primarily due to consolidation of the claycore and clayey random fill in the downstream shell, while mostof the foundation settlements occured up to the end ofconstruction. Monitoring data indicate that the cionsolidation process in theembankment and the foundation ended and the embankment has atpresent attained a steady state condition. It also hasexperienced a rapid draw down condition in its early history. Therefore it could be concluded that the embankment is safe forstatic loading conditions with respect to slope failures. Due to lack of data on material properties for quick loading, andthe provisional status of the design earthquake loadingcharacteristics, only a rough and not very reliable estimate onseismic safety was given. An improvement of the monitoring system, controlling seepagequantities and piezometric heads has been suggested.Recommendations are given for future actions on instalation of amonitoring system, investigation work for seismic analysisincluding finalizing seismological studies, and performinggeotechnical and geophisical site investigations. Criteria forpossible remedial works are also given in the Report.
