Summary: The project is aimed towards the development of a new
twodimensional large strain consolidation theory incorporating the
elastoplastic behaviour of soft clays. The theory should enhance
predictions of time dependent settlements of soft clay deposits including
the distribution of pore water pressures. The new theory is an extension of
a previously developed onedimensional theory. Its predictive capacity will
be tested against field measurements of long term settlements of an
embankment.
Keywords: soft clay, consolidation, creep, constitutive equation, large strain, finite element method
Research goals: The research project is aimed towards the
development of a theory and a practical computer program for numerical
simulation of the twodimensional consolidation process of soft clay layers
under structural loads. The stress-strain behaviour of soft clays will be
modelled as elastoplastic thus integrating settlement and bearing capacity
analyses into a consistent procedure. These analyses are dealt with
separately in standard engineering practice. The computer program will be
based on the finite element method with a numerical algorithm specially
developed for personal computers.
