Summary: In the centre of Zagreb in the immediate viciniti of the railway station in the area of 32000 sq.m a garage and shopping centre were constructed. In order to ensure the construction of a completely buried structure with three storeys, an excavation 14.60 m deep under the ground surface was provided. the retaining structure had to ensure the stability of the foundation pit, adjacent buildings (Hotel Esplanade) and trafic circulation (tramway and pedestrain subway) and to prevent water inflow in the foundation pit and thus to provide construction of the structure. The retaining structure consisted of a continuous reinforced concrete diaphragm wall improwed by the prestressed ground anchors.

Summary: A plane strain elasto-plastic kinematic hardening constitutive equation for frictional materials has been constructed based on the power law for small strain or elastic shear modulus, Mohr-Coulomb type shear strength law and the normalized shear modulus reduction function which relates the normalized shear strain and the normalized shear modulus fora wide range of strains. The elastic shear modulus and elastic shearstrain at failure were used as normalizing parameters. The proposed normalized shear modulus reduction function as a unique material function arises from the recent laboratory research on stress-strain behaviour of soil specimens tested with high resolution local strain transducers, which shows that the static and dynamic shear stiffness of soils follow the same pattern. Published data on the stress-strain response of Toyoura sand under cyclic and monotonic loading were used for the construction of the normalized modulus reduction function in static and dynamic analyses. The Masing type behaviour for cyclic loading is introduced by a series of simple elasto-plastic parallel elements which may easily be adjusted to the given normalized shear modulus reduction function. All model parameters can directly be obtained from standard laboratory tests.

Summary: A model for prediction of porewater pressure buildup in saturatedsands under cyclic loading is presented. The porewater pressurebuildup for all cyclic and static tests performed fellon a unique curve in the coordinate space of these parameters.Verifications of the model proved favourable also for otherresults published in the literature.

Summary: Computer program FLAC is described. The program is intended forsimulation of various field problems in two dimensions. It uses afast and memory efficient dynamic relaxation algorithm for thenumerical solution of partial differential field equations. Amongothers, this algorithm allows a simple interactive controll whenconvergence to the solution of nonlinear problems is endangered. The program allows for different constitutive equations formechanical behaviour and various types of interactions amongphases of two phase materials to be used simultaneously in thesame problem. FLAC also enables anlysis of steady and nonsteadyflow through porous media. These features render the programattractive for solving practical geotechnical problems.

Summary: It is often necessary to reliably predict foundation soil deformations. Overprediction of settlements in stiff clays and sands is often encountered when based on results from laboratory tests. Recent research has shown that overprediction occurs due to considerably greater soil stiffness at small strains than measured by conventional triaxial apparatuses, which normally do not provide for accurate measurements of small strains. Further, research has shown that shear modulus reduction with shear strain attained in monotonic tests closely corresponds to that used in dynamic analyses, for a long time considered as inappropriate for static loading. Consequently, devices for measuring small strains mounted directly on soil specimens were developed, and geophysical in situ test reaffirmed. Three necessary ingredients for successful prediction of deformations in stiff soils are identified through literature review: stiffness measurements by use of appropriate in situ geophysical methods, laboratory tests that can measure small strains, and methods of analysis that incorporate nonlinear stress-strain behaviour of soils. Main points of the paper are exemplified by a simplified settlement analysis of a circular shallow foundation on a sand layer.

Summary: The seismic stability was analysed by so-called "sliding block method" which includes the dynamic response analysis of dam, the determination of yielding accelerations of potential sliding bodies and the estimate of permanent dam deformation after the design earthquake. The dynamic response was studied by variable-stiffness-shear-beam model including the parametric analyses over the wide range of dynamic stiffness properties of earth materials and appropriate nonlinear stress-strain behaviour. The input seismic parameters included several real strong-motion records covering the wide range of frequencies. The yielding accelerations were determined by conventional slope stability method. The estimate of permanent displacements included the generation of appropriate diagrams using the same acceleration time-histories as in reponse analyses. The same method was applied in analysis of seismic behaviour of the dam during the strongest experienced earthquake in 1990., using the original acceleration records from the stations close to the Peruča dam location.

Summary: The causes of failure of left embankment of HPP Dubrava supply channel are analysed and the embankment stability conditions and remediation measures are discussed. Included are the result of geotechnical investigations for this purpose, as well as detailed filtration and slope stability analyses and embankment remediation criterions.

Summary: The concept, the extent and the results of complex geotechnical field and laboratory investigations in clayey dam core are presented. The investigations were carried out a year after the damage. The selection of design parameters included data collected during dam construction and control investigations performed after twenty years of dam exploitation. The comparison of recent measurements and the selected range of parameters for clay core is also presented. It is demonstrated that the design values are adequately estimated.
Keywords: Geotechnical investigations, design parameters, Peruča dam
