Summary: Research aims to revise and enhance the current knowledge
of stress-strain behaviour of water saturated sands under cyclic loading in
the range of small and medium strains. Experiments on sand samples in the
triaxial apparatus are part of the project. Measurements of strains will be
enhanced by Hall-effect transducers mounted inside the triaxial cell
chamber on the sample sides. Stress-strain relationships obtained by the
experimental program will be used to formulate a constitutive equation for
sands. The constitutive equation will be used in an appropriate computer
program for the analysis of earth structures under seismic loadings.
Research goals: - Determination of influence of drained and
undrained conditions on stress-strain behaviour under cyclic loading under
various initial stresses and densities; - Formulation of a unique
constitutive equation for sands under monotonic and cyclic loadings; -
Implementation of the developed constitutive equation into an appropriate
computer program for simulation of the behaviour of foundation soils under
various loads including earthquakes; This would enhance the design of
engineering structures founded on potentially unstable soils.
