Summary: The groundwater level on the right side of the Sava, in Zagreb area, has been noted to decrease in the last fifteen years. The phenomenon can be explained by a multitude of erosion conptrol works, construction of various dams, regulation works on the Sava river and its tributaries, including embankment construction, The changes are particularly significant in the Sava cross section near Zagreb, where the minimum annual water levels were reduced in the last twenty years about 150 cm.

Summary: The relation between mesoscale (the Kupa river catchment area, Croatia) discharge and precipitation field anomalies and macroscale (European-Northern Atlantic Region) surface pressure anomalies is considered. For this purpose the principal component analysis (PCA) technique has been applied. Mesoscale monthly discharge values for 25 stream flow measurement stations, precipitation and the Palmer 'drought index' data for 18 weather stations as well as the macroscale surface pressure for 12 x 19 grid points have been used. All refer to the period 1961-1980. Two principal components (PCs) are the most significant for each mesoscale field, which describe more than 85% of total field variance. In addition to a significant correlation indicated between mesoscale discharge and precipitation anomaly and the Palmer 'drought index' PCs, five space anomaly patterns were established for each field. A pattern of the macroscale surface pressure anomaly field corresponds to each of these patterns. Thus, an interpretation of the discharge anomaly field in the Kupa river basin in terms of macrocirculation is achieved.

Summary: The paper discusses the phenomena of soil erosion by water and it's influence on surface water regime. The importance of thisinfluence is stressed, as well as the fact thet it reflects indetermination of water quality regime, but also in scarcity ofwater resources, i.e. more frequent occurrence of droughts. Various forms of soil erosion by water are described, as well asmethods of investigation of such phenomena. The basic characteristics of described methods are presented, indicating the need for their application in the process of waterquality management. For this purpose, the use of the concept 4M +2P (Monitoring, Measuring, Mapping, Modeling + Predicting,Prevention) is recommended, and the importance of preventiveerosion control based on this concept is stressed. Suchprotection is one of the essential preconditions for successfulwater quality and quantity management.

Summary: EFFECTS OF DAMS AND RESERVOIRS ON THE HYDROLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LOWER DRAVA RIVER Abstract: During the last 20 years numerous water supply, hydroelectric and other large structures have been built along the Drava river and in its catchment area in Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Austria. Their construction has greatly influenced the water regime of the Drava River, especially during low water periods. The changes in the low flow regime along the stretch from Varazdin (285 km) to its confluence with the Danube (0 km) are examined. The analysis includes changes in the water levels, discharges and the amounts of suspended sediment and bed load. The intensity of changes, the time of their occurrence and their trends are examined.

Summary: Optimizing Overflow-profile Parameters for Small Watercourses The boundary depth is analyzed as a normal criterion for calculating overflow-profile contractions on structures with concentrated grade change at the bottom of open-air watercourses that do not transport alluvial matter. Authors have demonstrated that this criterion can not as yet be used on wotercourses designed according to the limit-velocity criterion or allowable flow-generating force. It is suggested that a more realistic criterion for obtaining an optimum shape of overflow profile would be obtained by introducing the condition of equal specific energy of flow in the bed and in the contracted profile.

Summary: DISTRIBUTION AND REGIONAL PECULIARITIES OF SOIL EROSION IN CROATIA SUMMARY: Agriculture is an extremly important component of economics of Croatia. More than 90% of whole area of 5,6 million hectares are subject to erosion of varying intensity. Soil degradation by water erosion in some region is a major problem, which cause seriously threatens the productivity of agricultural lands, adversely effects water quality, human health, redistribution of agrochemicals in aquatic ecosystems, reduces the productive life of drinking water storages and hydro-electric structures, increases soil acidification and mobility-toxicity of heavy metals in soil. With respect to soil cover, geomorfology, geological and lithological structure, natural vegetation cover, land utilisation, and climate features the whole territory of Croatia we devided in seven typical zones. Water erosion is particularly severe in the flysh zone of Istria. Distribution and regional pecularities of soil erosion suggest that the study of this problem is one absolutely neglected issues, with respect to its importance. In our opinion, the research work should be oriented towards exact investigation of erosion intensity on various soil types, on various land management practices, topographic positions and the other natural conditions. It is out of the question that land reform provides a unique opportunity for restoration of land that has been subjected to degradation for many years, and soil erosion control is a key question of stabilisation of agroeconomy in Croatia. But, it is sure that Croatia is unable to cover all costs of research and SEC measures from own fonds. Therefore, we expect to find a understanding and financial support for implement demo-farms for demonstrations of apropriate SEC systems, based on long year experiences of SCS using of best management practices. It includes as much as possible cultural practices, such as crop residue management, contouring, strip-cropp, crop rotation and other treatment measures as terraces, or grassed waterways. Our intention is to realise this project in the area of the Butoniga reservoir of drinking water in central Istria, near Buzet town in flysh zone, on pseudogley soil in area of Daruvar-west Slavonia, and on shallow undeveloped soils on marl in Bednja river valley, in north-west Croatia.

Summary: Inland Navigation Development Strategy in Croatia Summary: The objective of this paper is to provide a general review of the inland navigation conditions in Croatia and a scientifcally grunded projections of the authors on its outlooks in the future. Having this as a point of departure a number of aspects have been dealt with referring to traffic, transport, fleet and civil engineering and financing aspects. It hes been proved that the inland navigation in Croatia possesses potential of it enters the Europie's market of services by way of the Adriatic-Danube Basin traffic corridor. Within this scope the subject corridor should be made attraetive from the treffic aspect by construction of a combined navigation/rail route of high international standard and class on the Adriatic-Danube route. This requirement can be fulfilled through the construction of the Danube-Sava Canal, Rijeka-Zagreb double gauge rail link, improving the Sava river by channeling, and construction of the Zagreb river port in conjunction with provision of facilities for other ports and additions to the fleet of vessels.

Summary: Technical and Economic Justifiability of the Sava-Danube Multi-Purpose Canal Construction Summary: The assessments and reviews completed so far indicate that it is justified to continue further preliminary works and operations for the construction of the Danube-Sava Canal. It appears that the construction of the canal is profitable at an interest of less than 8.1 % while the solvency is attained in the period upon completion of the investment project for the entire canal and the drainage and irrigation system with cash inflow in amounts of expected annual profits. Taking into consideration the possibility of getting foreign loans of up to 40 % of the amount of canal construction costs it appears that it is also necessary to secure own funding for the construction of $ 117 milion, including construction of additional sections of the drainage and irrigation system distributed onto the entire period of construction. Within the scope of naming and assigning the contractors (or bearers of further activities) one should consider the former contractors and all other users regarding the multipurpose aspect of the Danube-Sava Canal as well as the users of the multi-aspected improvement of the Sava River. Namely, the up-to-date activities and completion of certain appropriate works on the Biđ, Bosut, Vuka and Sava rivers financed and carried out under the arrangement of water resources management companies and institutions. However, for the completion of the overall program of the "Danube-Sava Multi-Purpose Canal" it is required in an as short as possible period to name and assign the bearers of individual activities with defined financial and schedule- oriented dynamics of execution of activities.

Summary: ARTIFICIAL INCREASE OF WATER QUANTITIES AND WATER SUPPLY OF THE TOWN OF ZAGREB Abstract: With respect to considerable changes (hydrological, morphologi cal, hydrogeological, etc.) occurring in recent years in the upper part of the Sava river catchment area and influencing the water supply of the town of Zagreb, intensive research of the causes of such phenomena has been undertaken. In recent years, hydrological droughts were frequent, and similar situation is probably to be expected until the end of the century, and the question of improvement of low streamflows, as well as of artificial recharging of ground water becomes interesting. Although Zagreb is located on top of considerable quantities of ground water, transfer of water from other catchment areas is considered. The results of research show that water from the Drava basin is of primary interest (large quantities, perfect annual distribution, rather acceptable transport distance, and among all catchment areas considered, best water quality), and in the second place, water from the Una and the Kupa catchment areas.

Summary: Hydrological Aspects of the Butonega Reservoir Management ABSTRACT: The Butonega reservoir is planned and constructed as a central multipurpose water management structure in Istria which had only inferior use as the water reserve so far. The preliminary results of hydrological investigations of the reservoir water balance indicate that, under the conditions prevailing after formation of the reservoir, the available water balance for intended purposes was considerably lower, and the occurrence of floods considerably higher than forecasted. The present paper describes the possibilities for providing the additional quantities of water in the reservoir by its possible recharge from the Bulaž spring and the potential Rečina reservoir upstream the town of Buzet.

Summary: Morphological Forecasts for the Sava River Channel Near Zagreb Abstract: The paper describes mathematical modelling of morphological and psammological processes on the Sava River stretch through the City of Zagreb. The major deviations in shape of the available granulometric curves and psammological inputs impeded unambiguous development of the model. Therefore, two boundary models were developed whose simulation results should be considered envelopes within which the actual situation is expected. The models were prepared on the basis of the general mathematical simulation model HEC-6 developed in the USA, and their concept was to enable continuous updating with the new input data. At the present level of development they can be used for preliminary forecasts of impact of various factors on the morphological-psammological characteristics of the Sava River stretch between the Gaging Stations Podsused-Žičara and Rugvica.

    Held: from 09/14/95 to 09/16/95
Summary: The paper first gives a review of geological, topographic, climatic, hydrographic and biological characteristics of the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia. Among others, the typical characteristics are pointed out which are of essential importance for the occurrence of intensive soil erosion processes and specific erosion phenomena noticed on the peninsula. Accordingly, the division of the peninsula between Bjela Istra (White Istria), Siva Istra (Gray Istria) and Crvena Istra (Red Istria) is given. Next, the present status of development of erosion processes is presented, as determined by studies according to the parameter-estimation methodology, traditionally used in Croatian water management practice. The paper particularly stresses the influence of soil erosion on water management in Istria, which is especially present in the catchment area of the largest and most important water storage basin in Istria, i.e. accumulation Botonega. A review is given of the present knowledge on the erosion phenomena in this catchment area, indicating the need for comprehensive and complex field research of erosion. A summary is given of the research program elaborated in 1993, according to which the research was initiated in the same year. Finally, soil erosion control measures are proposed.
