Summary: The paper focuses on the development and modelling
ofresidual cyclic pore water pressure, 'u' in clay during undrainedcyclic
strain-controlled loading. Data obtained from a series ofNGI type cyclic
simple shear tests were employed. In addition tothe amplitude of cyclic
shear strain, the number of cycles, N,and the overconsolidation ratio, OCR,
a new component isincorporated the conventional characterization of 'u'.
This newcomponent is the volumetric threshold shear strain, of clayeysoil,
below which for all practical purposes 'u' does notdevelop.

Summary: The results of engineering-geological, mineralogical,
petrographical and geotechnical (laboratori and in situ) investigations of
flysch layers are presented in the paper. These investigation were
performed over the last fifteen years in the coastal areas of the Adriatic
in the Republic of Croatia. The information collected enabled establishment
of number of corelations between mineralogical-petrographical composition
and geotehnical properties of flysch layers. Additional investigations are
currently carried out to obtain further information and the established
correlations are critically analyzed. The investigations performed and the
relations established enable development of more rational solutions at the
stage of evaluation, design and construction of structures in areas
sharacterizes by flysh formations.

Summary: The choice of the excavation technology is very
important inthe design of the relatively long water conduit tunnels
(10-15km) having a small cross sectional area (up to 20 m2). Theexcavation
technology either by blasting or by machine (TBM)should be based on the
previously performed engineeringgeological, geophysical and geotechnical
investigations. Theelastic and plastic analyses of stress states around the
tunnelwere performed using the program package Rheo-Staub. Increase
inreliability of surveying (presisely determining direction of thetunnel
excavation) is described in the paper. All investigationsand analyses were
perfomed at the water conduit tunnel Krivaja -Oskova (L = 13 km).

Summary: Unlike the old solution with at-grade traffic and
open-airparking lots, whereby the route would cut through a number
ofexisting major road services and infrastructural facitities, thenew
solution enables transferring the parking garage structuresinto underground
space.
According to this new solution, the noise and pollution
willsignificantly be reduced in the new commercial and nauticalcenter of
Gruž. Technical elements of the solution, indispensablefor analyzing the
rationality of placing the garage intounderground space, are also presented
in this paper.

Summary: A more rational approach to the production of
constructionmaterials is a significant prerequisite for the renewal
anddeevelopment of the infrastructural, housing and commercialstructures
destroyed during the war. In the light of the existingregional development
plans and considering the increasing trendstowards greater environment
protection as well as the quantity(volume) and price of such materials in
relation to optimumtransport distances, it is indispensable to resort to
theconstruction of multipurpose underground spaces and to use thusobtained
stone material for other construction purposes. Apossibility of the
rational stone material extraction in the areaof Dubrovnik is presented in

Summary: The seismic stability on natural slopes in clayey
materialsis a subject about which much uncertainty still exists. Therefore,
selection of the method for the seismic slopestability analysis is an
important part of solving the problem. In this paper the basic elements of
the pseudo-static method, thesliding block method and the Ishihara's method
are discussed. Acase history of seismic stability analysis of an Adriatic
coastflysch slope has been employed to evaluate the applicability
andreliability of these methods. The slope is treated as an infiniteslope.
Although no definitive conclusions can be drawn from asingle case history
study, results may be used in futureevaluations of seismic stability of
similar slopes in cohesivematerials.

Summary: Steel fibre reinforced shotcrete has been extensively used
in tunnels for underground support for better rock quality, and in
combination with bolts for poorer rock quality. In this paper are presented
results of the laboratory research and field teststo investigate the
possibility of using the polypropilene (PP) fibres instead of steel ones.
The laboratory research included testing the properties of different sorts
and shapes of PP fibres, bond properties (pull-out tests) of PP fibres from
different concrete mixes and standard bending test of concrere prisms. With
obrtained data the computer analysis werw conducted, for different stages
of construction, by means of FLAC computer program, which included the
interaction of primary layer and reinforced rock. For the sake of
comparison test fields on the site werw exwcuted with steel and PP fibres
and steel reinforcing meshes. The bearing capacities of shortcrete with PP
fibres, tested in situ with hydraulic jacks, were of the same order as for
shortcrete with steel fibres or reinforcing meshes.

Summary: Transport solutions presently used in urban areas involve
designing and building high-capacity city arteries, and the emphasis is
increasing placed on providing more parking space in doyntoyn areas.
Considering the lack of undeveloped space on the ground surface and the
very high cost of construction of tunnels and underground structures is
very often cnsidered as the most resonable solution to urban transport
problems.
At that, it is significant to take into account regional-planning and
traffic aspests as well as the results obtained during engineering-geology
and geotechnical investigation, as they greatly influence the architectonik
and structural concept of underground structures. In addition, an adequate
attention must also be paid to enviromental aspects (ground-water
pollution, exhaust gases, etc.) and, sinally, to the rationality at the
design and construction stages.
These investigations served as a basis for establishing the correlation
between the excavation and primary support unit price and the
cross-sectional area or excavation volume. Finally, a complex correlation
between the unit price and the cross-sectional area and excavation volume
was established and presented in the form of diagrams to facilitate its
use.

Summary: A new method is developed for the evaluation of the
seismicresponse of horizontally layered saturated soil deposits composedof
layers of sand and clay, i.e., composite soil deposits. Themethod is
implemented in a computer program named D-MOD, whichcombines a newly
developed generalized cyclic degradation-porewater pressure generation
model for clay, a modified cyclicstress degradation model for sand, and a
modified general stress- strain model for soils.
