Summary: Satellite altimetar data (Geos-3, Seasat and Geosat) and bathymetric data have been used to calculate an ocean wide set of free-air gravitz anomalies and geoid undulations. An averaged, over one zear (1986/1987), Geosat sea surface height track, based on improved, over GEM-T2, orbits was used as the master altimeter frame. The Geosat track was based on the averaging of 22 ERMs and taking into account geoid gradients (Wang and Rapp, 1992). In the computation the altimeter sea surface heights were reduced to geoid undulations using an Ohio State long wavelenght spherical harmonic representation of sea surface topographz (dznamic heights). The altimeter data in a region, usuallz a 8řx 8ř area, was subjected to a bias alone crossover adjustment with fitting to the geoid undulation implied by the OSU91 potential coefficient model. The average Geosat crossover discrepancies after this adjustment were +-4cm with poorer agreement with Seasat data (+-10 cm) and Geos-3 data (+-46 cm). The anomalies and undulations were predicted in a 0ř,5 cell using a two component remove/restore technique. Thew first part was the use of the OSU91A potential coefficient model to degree 360 as a reference while the second part involved the computation of the residual terrain model (RTM) effect on both anomalies and geoid undulations using the 5'x 5' ETOPO5U dta set and a Fourier computation program from Forsberg. The incorporation of the bathymetric data introduces a strenght to the solution, especially in areas where the altimeter coverage is sparse. The initial predictions were subjected to several editing steps. Contour plots of the undulations were examined to indentfy obviously poor prediction. The predictions were also examined relative to magnitude and predicted standard deviations so that unacceptable predictions could be removed. A second edit was carried out by comparing predicted along track gradiednts along a Geosat track for comparison with observed values. Such comparison revealed significant discrepances in some areas. The first edit predictions were then modified to correct most, but not all, of the problems. The final data set contained 2,312,964 geoid undulations and 2,325,669 gravitz anomalies, on a 0ř,125 grid, with standard deviations for each point. A mean sea surface can be created by applying a sea surface topography correction to the predicted geoid undulation, and taking into account a proper tide reference system. The predicted point values were used to create 30'x 30', 1řx 1ř, and 5řx 5řmean gravity anomalies and geoid undulations. The 1řx 1ř anomalies were compared to terrestrial anomaly data with an agreement of +-9,2 mgals which is 14% less than with the previous (Hwang, 1989) prediction. A detailed description of a number of different data sets developed in this report are described in an appendix.

Summary: Three kinds of satellite altimeter data have been combined, along with 5'x 5' bathymetric data, to calculate a 0.125ř ocean wide gridded set of 2.3x10Č6 free-air gravity anomalies. The procedure used was least squares collocation that yields the predicted anomaly and standard deviation. The value of including the bathymetric data was shown in a test around the Dowd Seamount where the root mean square (rms) difference between ship gravity measurements decreased from +-40 mgal to +-20 mgal when the bathymetry was included. Comparisons between the predicted anomalies and ship gravity data is described in three cases. In the Banda Sea the rms differences were +-20 mgalfor two lines. In the South Atlantic rms differences over lines of 2000 km in length were +-7 mgal. For cruise data in the Antartica region the discrepancies were +-12 mgal. Comparisons of anomalies derived from the Geosat geodetic mission data by Marks and McAdoo Š1992Ć with ship data gave differences of +-6 mgal showing the value of the much denser Geosat geodetic mission altimeter data.

Summary: In the past years high resolution detailed fields for free air gravity anomalies and sea surface heights (SSH) in ocean areas have been produces. These solutions are based on the crossover adjusted satellite altimeter data and a geopotential model, which were combined using the method of least squares collocation (LSC) in the manner of the well-known remove-restore technique. In the paper an extension of this procedure is described by also taking bathymetric information into account. From the comparisions based on ship gravity measurements, it can be concluded that significant imporvemnets in predicted gravity anomalies and altimeter implied geoid undulations are possible in this way, especiallz for ocean areas featured with rough bathymetry and sparce altimeter data. For the Dowd seamount test area the simultaneous use of Geos-3/Seasat altimeter data, OSU89B geopotential model and ETOPO5U digital terrain model gave an imporvement by nearly a factor of two (in terms of the standard deviations of differences) versus the solution which excludes bathymetric information.

Summary: As a independent state, Croatia needs much better knowledge of the gravity field parameters, especially in connection with the present realization of GPS-measurements on its territory. In order to get the best possible gravity field solution in the case of really large relief variety, different kind of data - gravity anomalies, vertical deflections, satellite altimetry - has to be appropriately combined, taking also into account the topographic/bathymetric information. In this paper some preliminary results for the gravimetric geoid are presented for the first time. It is comparison with the existing astrogeodetic solution for Slovenia and part of Croatia is given and future possible steps described.

    Held: from 07/02/95 to 07/14/95
Summary: After the first astrogeodetic and gravimetric geoid surfaces have been completed recently, the very first results of new gravity field solution in Croatia in 1995 is being presented in this paper. It includes the long wavelength part of the gravity field information from the specially tailored gepotential model to degree and order 360, since no gravity data at Croatian territory has been employed in the compulation of existing such models so far, the middle and short wavelenght part is covered by astrogeodetic vertical deflection components over the land and point gravity anomalies from satellite altimeter data over the Adriatic Sea area. As the method of compulation, the collocation, which enable the optimal combination of different kind of gravity field data and ensure the error estimates of all predicted quantities is applied, in connection with well known remove-restore technique.

Summary: The original approach in the modelling of the Earth's crust - especialy its upper portion - utilising different kinds of geodetic (vertical deflection components, geoid surface), gravimetric (Bouguer and other gravity anomalies) and geophysical (3D density information coming from seismic and boreholes prospection) data is presented in this paper. This scientific research was being worked on within the frame of a special contract between Faculty of Geodesy and the state oil company INA - Naftaplin, with the major aim to establish additional new interesting information about the gravity field in certain test area of northern Croatia. It should support better geophysical prospection of mineral bearing, particulary in the field of possible hydrocarbon exploration.

    Held: from 08/11/91 to 08/24/91
Summary: When investigating the linear correlation between quantities which can be represented as geometrical configurations in n-dimensional Euclidean space, a geometrical interpretation can be assigned to the absolute value of the correlation coefficient. If one of the configurations can be obtained by streching the other, the correlation coefficient will have the absolute value of 1. When this value is different, but close to 1, one of the configurations can be streched in such a way to come close to the other. Hence, the relation between the value of the correlation coefficient and the geometrical relationship between the respective configurations is established. The proposed geometrical interpretation of the correlation coefficient serves as a basis for establishing the theory of "maximal correlation adjustment". In fact varying the geometrical relationship between two geometrical configurations changes the value of the correlation coeficient, which at some moment may become maximal (by absolute value). Theoretical considerations are illustrated on geodetic-geophysical examples.
