Summary: Based on ecological principles of preservation and
improvement of man's environment, the objective of this project is to
analyze particular architectural factors that have a decisive effect on
form, design, energy efficiency, cost effectiveness and psychophysical
qualities of housing, and to attempt to define criteria and elements for an
improved model of apartment building architecture that would outline an
integral ecological approach to residential building in Zagreb and provide
a foundation for a different approach to design and future standards in the
field.

Research goals: With present-day ecological demands in view, the
proposed project will investigate the dominant forms of residential
building in Zagreb (family homes and apartment blocks), in particular a)
their urban value; b) adaptability of their structure to the relative and
absolute flexibility in the organization of residential space; c)
bioclimatic and energy characteristics of both forms in regard to size,
position and orientation; d) their potential at variety that could express
the tenants' individuality and create a feeling of belonging; on the basis
of the above analyses, the project will attempt to formulate models of
multi-apartment building in Zagreb that could provide a pattern for other
cities in Croatia. Within the project, possibilities will be investigated
for the application of CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design) methods
and systems for visualization and evaluation in architectural design that
help the efficiency of the process and the overall quality (in terms of
environment, design, function and energy) of residential designs. Also
investigated will be the possibility for creating knowledge bases on
housing units and surroundings, drawn upon the research in the field of
artificial intelligence, that would contain experience and knowledge
derived from this research, and could become and intelligent part of future
integrated CAD systems and a "consultant" to architects and other
professionals.
