Summary: The built heritage of Pula, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik and the
seven settlements of Kastela has been dealt by a unique methodology which
has resulteted in developing of young trained personnel and in acquiring
lots of information on the built heritage. Many a research papers prepared
on the basis of such information can be used as preliminary work in the
process of restoration, reconstruction and rehabilitation of the built
heritage. All the so far published books and papers on the Amphitheatre of
Pula have been collected in Pula together with all the available maps
necessary for the presenatation of the original appearance of the
Amphitheatre. Historic documents, both written and grafical, kept in the
archives all over Europe, have been gathered in Zadar, thus making a
presentation of the spatial evolution of Zadar possible. Within the
research on the spatial evolution of Split many of the no longer existing
buildings have been throughly studied. Some of the research have been
completed, such as for Bacvice cape, for the Cathedral belltower and for
the archiepiscopal realty in the southeast section of the Palace of
Diocletian, while the research on the Benedictine Monastery, on the
Lazarets (quarantine hospitals) and on the town fortifications from the
seventeenth century have been nearly completed. The original appearance of
the south-eastern section of the Palace of Diocletian has been thoroghly
studied, and much more learnt about the preserved sections of the Palace
throughout centuries. The belltowers of Dubrovnik have been completely
surveyed, while it is still been worked on the definition and presentarion
of beginnings of mediaeval town of Dubrovnik and the Churches dedicated to
St. Vlaho, patron of the town. Spatial evolution of Kastel Stari, both of
the Town and fortified castle, has been completed, while partial survey is
being prepared for the towns of Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Sućurac and Kaštel
Gomilica.
Keywords: Original state of Amphieatre in Pula, the Diocletian's palace in Split. Spatial development of Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik and "The seven Kaštela" group of settlements.
Research goals: Work on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of
historic buildings and sites enables only a part of the values be restored
and exposed. A great deal of such values, even when we know about them,
remains hidden. By studying the spatial evolution of historic buildings and
sites and by presenting them graphically, one can learn about their values
which were not possible to be presented thus not perceived through the
rehabilitation and reconstruction activities. The understanding of spatial
development retained in people's mind, together with the preserved and
physically exposed buildings and sites makes a unique entity. Therefore,
the results obtained by studying the spatial evolution of historic
buildings and sites form the basis for the process of evaluation, planning,
designing, rehabilitation and restoration of the built heritage. At the
same time it helps in defining the places of possible architectural
findings. The knowledge of historic buildings and sites is now being
broadened with the results of new research which finally helps the
scientific definition be made of the spatial evolution of historic
buildings and sites. Thorough knowledge of historic buildings and sites
provide the opportunities for a comparative research of different buildings
and sites. A thorough research on a historic building includes research on
the structure, building technology, measurement system, etc. The results of
such research provide opportunity for understanding the level of scientific
achivements in different historic periods in the area in concern.
