Summary: This treatise on the importance of the Citadel of Slunj in
terms of history and cultural heritage deals with the
origin, development and historical role if this old feudal
castle. Until the Turkish invasion the cith and the
surrounding property were ruled by the Frankopan Princes of
Krk. In the 16th century the place was taken over by the
military authorities of Krajina (the Croatian Military
Border).
The work includes archival graphic presentations
illustrating the changes on this important piece of the
Croatian architectural heritage. The present state of its
ruins not only arouses our exploratorh curiosity, but also
poses some questions about its survival or complete
disapparance.

Summary: Architect Neven Šegvic (1917-1992) was born in Split.
Hegraduated from the Department for Architecture at the ArtsAcademy in
Zagreb in 1941 in the class of professor Drago Ibler.During his studies he
worked at the atelier of Master IvanMestrovic. After the war, he started
working as an assistant forarchitectural composition at the Faculty of
Architecture inZagreb. In 1960 he was elected honorary and in 1972
regularprofessorship at the same faculty. In 1978 he got the doctor'sdegree
with the thesis "Approach to Architecture".
Amidst the many distingueshed architectural realizations that heeither
designed, supevised or conceptually conceived are: theVukovar Avenue in
Zagreb, the Peristil in Split and the WestCoast, Sorkocevic Palace and the
"Excelsior" hotel inDubrovnik, Peljesac, Hvar, Vis, Rijeka, Kumrovec.
A model also for written word, clear and concise, he was thefounder and the
editor-in-chief of the magazine "Architecture"(1947-1950). He managed to
profile the professional puglicationsthrough numerous texts. Also, he was a
moderator and counsellorto recent war editions.

Summary: The feudal city and castle of Modrus is perfectly situated
amidstthe Romanesque fortifications, at an ancient road that used tolink
Northern Croatia with the seaside and the town of Senj. Fromthe 13th
century until its fall a century later it was also aseat of the Frankopan
Princes of Krk, one of the most powerfuldynasties of Croatia. During the
Turkish wars the Modrus Castleceased to be a focal point of a spacious
feudal property.However, the city was being rebuilt, renewed and extended
as longas the property was run by its owners. During the 16th and
17thcenturies, while inhabited only by a small garrison of
frontiersoldiers, the city and its fortifications were left to decay.

Summary: In the second half of the fifteenth and in the sixteenth
century Turkish attacks on Croatia escalated and
fortification construction increased. New types of
fortifications developed, primarily designed for efficient
defence from firearms and artillery. These fortifications
included the round defence tower, which served both for the
daily protection of the owner-castellan and for defence from
attacks by larger Turkish units.
It id interesting that such defence towers wete typical of
the Croatian Military frontier region (Banija, Kordun, Lika,
Krbava), which was probably the consequence of both local
traditions and influence from the south, i.e. from Dalmatia.
The workmanship of the details depended on local materials
and on the skill of local masters, and we may say that these
defence towers were typical of the sixteenth-century
Croatian Military Frontier.

Summary: Planning the new town of Sibenik II in the area of
Podsolarsko, Zablaće, Velika Solina and Mala Solina will
greatly influence the final arrangement. This article is an
attempt to simulate the future situation through analysis of
natural and functional factors and a discussion of similar
examples in the world which will confirm or deny the staring
hypothesis. Research shows that these two settlement will
very great consequences for the Solaris Hotels. The summer

Summary: Zvonimir Požgaj (1906-1971) was one of few Croatian
architects who devoted their creative power to designing of
swimming pools ond beaches. That brought him to a group of
modern architects who dealt with the sports architecture and
he achieved extraordinary reputation. In the sports
architecture he gained two superior awards: in 1953. an
international award at the Second Biennale in Sao Paolo,
Brasil, for a beach center "Borik" in Zadar, and for the
"Plaža" ("The Beach") center in Crikvenica. Požgaj got
the 1961 "Viktor Kovačić Annual Award".
Also his other swimming pools modern designs attracted
attention by their functionality and beauty like the
Stubičke Toplice and Tuheljske Toplice swimming pools.
Požgaj also designed many churches, hotels and private
houses built up in the Croatian capital Zagreb and many
other places.

Summary: Franjo Bahovec designed and supervised the building of many
sports centers whose architectural constructions
unobtrusively fitted into every day living of the city of
Zagreb, where the majority of his buildings were made.
Respectively, one could mention the Salata Sports Stadium,
the Winter Swimming-Pool at the Trg Sportova (the Sports
Square, the Svetice outdoor swimming-pool and belonging
tennis and ATHLETIC field as well as the Sljeme Cableway
stations. His contribution to the sports architecture made
the life of numerous Zagreb citizens much more healthy, rich
and nice. Today his sports buildings represent a creatively
complete and unique work in the context of a wealthier
sports tradition of Zagreb as well as of the Croatian
architecture as a whole.

Summary: Maksimir and Svetice are located at the eastern part of the
city of Zagreb and are known for their sports facilities. The first
playground at the place was built for the members of the Sokol Association
in 1897. Both Maksimir and Svetice became the popular sports centres for
the inhabitants of Zagreb. The architects Aleksandar Freudenreich, A.
Dryak, Franjo Bahovec, Antun Ulrich,Drago Ibler and others, made the
lay-outs of playgrounds and sports stadiums. They built soccer fields,
tennis courts, swimming pools, running tracks and other sports facilities,
which have been used by the numerous inhabitants of Zagreb so far.

Summary: The first sporting grounds, gymnaziums and tennis courts
were put up in Zagreb in the second half of the 19th century. The modern
gymnazium and sports stadium for the secondary school students called
"Elipsa" was built up in 1896. It was used for many sports and games by the
students, individual athletes and sports clubs of Zagreb. In the course of
time "Elipsa" was addedwith new buildings, playing fields and sports
facilities.

Summary: Sports facilities designed by Franjo Bahovec, born in 1906.
in Samobor, are a rounded and complete creative opus in Zagreb's rich
sports tradition and in modern Croatian architecture. His most important
work is the Šalata Sports and Recreation Centre, which began as a small
group of tennis courts, and during thirty years, designed by Bahovec, grew
into what it is today (it was completely renewed and rearranged for the
1987 University Games). He designed the Mladost Swimming Pool, the first
indoor swimming pool in Zagreb, and the Svetice Sports center with an
outdoor swimming pool. Bahovec also designed the bottom and top stations of
the Sljeme cable-car, the ski lift at the top of Medvednica and the outdoor
swimming pools in Zelina and Bregana. His buildings have cleary organized
interiors, and simple and rational structural solutions.

Summary: Presentation of the history of sports-recreational
construction in Zagreb began at the beginning of the nineteenth century
with a reconstruction of the outdoor shootingrange in Tuškanac. During the

Summary: On the examples of some buildings of architect Boris
Krstulović, damaged in the aggression against Croatia, the problems of
sanation of valuable works of contemporary architecture are being surveyed.
Although the reconstruction and renewal of new architecture is less complex
problem than a reparation of an ancient structure (since one uses for the
new architecture contemporary materials and structures, whose qualities are
known to us, and usually the original project is also accessible), it
raises some specific problems not easy to solve (such as material damage to
naked reinforced concrete, e.g.)

Summary: Only recently, a search for proper solutions of the problem
imposed by erecting new buildings in an old, historical
setting has been initiated. Although it had always been an
acute problem, nowadays it has become particularly
pronounced.
There is actually a conflict between two demands, the need
of preserving architectural legacy and the developmental
requirements of new architecture. During several post-war
decades, the architectural legach was quite carelessly
treated, but the priority then given to trade and transport
can by means be attributed to architects alone.
For preservation of historical urban nuclei, mere quality
and careful interpolation vill not be sufficient, and
facsimiles are not the only alternative; proper relationship
between the new and the old appears to be of utmost
importance, while between complete adaptation and ruthless
contrast there is n e w c o n s t r u c t i o n as a
contribution o u r t i m e s.

there was the dilemma of faximile or modern rebuilding of
that unique monument of high gothic. Today - the church is

Summary: In the aggression agains Croatia our architectural heritage
has been systematically destructed. To approach the damages
to historical monuments, scientific analysis methods shorld
be used to asses the damage and approach the most suitable
sanation methods. Our contribution to that objective is the
finite element computer modeling of the damaged dome of the
Sibenik cathedral, a masterpiece of the Croatian
Quattrocento architecture. The analysis has prooved that the
projectile injuty to the dome structure is not a dangerous
one, because the projectile has fortunately missed the rib.

carried out by on COSMOS/M computer system by method of final elements, has
showed that the statics of the dome and the whole cathedral has not been

Summary: By the use of FE method, using the COSMOS-M system, we have
analysed the damage done to the dome of the Cathedral of
Sibenik, a masterpiece of the Croatian Quattrocento
architecture. Before that, an elaborate analysis of the
whole structure was done, using more conventional analysis
metods. Fortunately, the shell injury to the dome structure
is not a dangerous one, but there was an imense luck,
because the projectile gad missed the rib of the dome arch,
which could have done a devastating effect to hystorical
monuments, scientfic analysis methods shoud be used to asses
the damage and approach the most suitable sanation methods.

Summary: Church architecture in the continental part of medieval
Croatia (north of Mt. Velebit) is a specific unit. There were bishopries
with their cathedrals. Unfortunately, most of these buildings were
destroyed during the wars with the Turcs. Churches and cathedrals were
designed in the way of so called "art of the margins", as declared by our
famous art historian Ljubo Karaman.

cjelokupnost sakralne arhitekture na osnovi povijesnih izvora, snimaka na

nekoliko crtaža i fotografija, te obuhvaća 120 tipkanih strana, 333
napomene i 93 crteža i fotografija. Za tisak bih mogao rukopis predati u
vrlo kratkom vremenu.

Other: Za života Mladena Vodičke počela sam mu pomagati u prirpemi
rukopisa za tisak (tehnička suradnja), a nakon njegove smrti sudjelovala
sam u dovršenju knjige: odredila sam izvore, načinila sam sve znanstvene
bilješke, odredila izvore podataka, provjerila podatke, datume i
ortografiju imena, te pronašla grafički materijal za ilustracije.
