Summary: In the Republic of Croatia the mostly spread sheep breed is
autochtoneous breed "Pramenka", and not so widely represented are "Cigaja"
and "Solčavsko jezerska".In different climatic conditions various sorts of
this sheep breeds were developed, as well as a lot of crossbreeds. The
physical-chemical examinations samples of wool shows a differences in
properties of wool from the sheep developed in different climatic
conditions.

is the moment when sheep livestock should be reconstituted in Croatia,
financial resources are being invested in it, and we think textile
producers should have their say in choosing the breed of sheep to be reared
in Croatia. If, with ame number of sheep, decision would be in favour of
the breeds with bigger wool harvests. The quantity of washed wool available
in Croatia could exceed 1400 tonnes yearly.

shearing, regardless to breed and wool quality, the sheared wool can become
a useful raw material and not waste. In order to change the present state a

Summary: Wool as a natural protein fibre is a valuable raw material
for the textile industry. Besides, it is the only natural source of an
important pharmaceutical material - lanolin. In Croatia about 1000 metric
tons of greasy wool yearly left behind unused because of an uneven quality.
In order to revive interest in this neglected source of raw material a

Summary: Around 750 tonnes of greasy wool of uneven quality was left
unused in Croatia in 1990, mainlly due to inadequate knowledge of sorting
and preparation for sale and also to wide variety of breeds present. Having
in mind these, not so small, quantities of wool, and also enviromental
considerations, it is clear that the post-war livestock reconstruction
effort in Croatia should beaimed at narrowing the variety of the breeds
present in Croatia, with the purpose to get, besides meat and milk, wool
even and higher quality, such as could be processed in industrial mills.
