Summary: Chemical, phisycal and dyeing properties of wool fibres will be investigate , with the aim of structural caracterization and utility. Samples of wools from domestic shheep flocks will be cillected and defined: breeds, flocks, age, breeding conditions otc. Wool fibres classification methods will be developed and data from our standards coordinated with foreign ones, especially New Zealand and Australian. Domestic wool fiber quality will be compared to coarse cross-breed wools (for example New Zealand and other so called cross breds). Contacts will be made with veterinarians and agronoms and an joined proposition of possibilities and ways of breeding new breeds and of merinisation of sheep flocks in Croatia will be given, with the aim of obtaing besides meat and milk also an wool fibres satisfactory for textile usage.

Research goals: The aim of the investigation is to get to know all the characteristics of the wool of pramenka - domestic breed of sheep, sub-breeds and cross-breeds. This will be the first systematic recording of the conditions and quality of domestic sheep wool ever made in Croatia. It will serve as a foundation for deciding whether it would be feasible to start a project of improving sheep flocks with the aim of getting wool fibres of higher quality. Successefully implemented projects of merinisation (cross-breeding oh autochtonous sheep breeds with merino sheep) have bruoght New Zealand and some other countries, into the position of important wool fibre producers. It should be noted that such a project is costly and long-lasting so the decision on its implementation should be brought with all due considerations. If it is affirmative, this survey can also serve as a basis for choosing sub-breeds which could be subjected to merinisation. Having in mind the fact that a single sheep is a small raw material factory for food, textile, leather and chemicall industry, the project aims at connecting all the branches interested. This cooperation is critical for Croatian economy, especially at the moment when the livingstock has been destroyed and when its reconstittution is being planned. Through joined research effort optimal use of sheep products could be achieved.
