Summary: Nickel complexes with Schiff bases
2-(2-pyridylmethyleneamino)phenol (PMAP) and
2-(2-quinolylmethyleneamino)phenol (QMAP) were prepared and the composition
of the crystalline complexes was determined by elemental analysis,
solubility, UV-VIS, IR and mass spectrometry. It was found that, for the
Ni-PMAP complex, two ligands were bonded to one metal ion, giving a neutral
complex with one molecule of water probably bonded in the inner sphere of
the complex. with QMAP, nickel forms cationic complexes with a
metal-to-ligand ratio of 2:2 and two molecules of acetate as anions. The
solution properties of NI-QMAP were investigated a t different pH. The
chromophoric properties of the complex were enhanced with increase ih pH,
while stability decreased with time. The aplication of QMAP as a
spectrophotometric reagent for the determination of small amounts of nickel
was investigated. Adherence to Beer's law was observed from 0.00 to 5.00
ug/mL at pH 8, the most appropriate pH in respect to sensitivity and
acceptable time stability of the complexes. Dyeing properties of both
complexes were investigated on polyamide 66 and the influence of the
addition of another phenyl ring to the ligand molecule on the dyeing
properties of the complex is discussed.

Summary: The solution properties of PPP, QPP, and their complexes
with copperand nickel were investigated. The composition and stability
ofthe complexes have been determined using the spectrophotometric method at
T=25 C, constant ionic strength (I= 0.5 M, adjusted with KNO3) and a volume
ratio of methanol/water of PHI=0.10 and 0.16 for PPP and QPP, respectively,
due to lower solubility of QPP. The experimental results have been fitted
to the theoretical equations using the computerized iterative method of
succesive approximation. The influence of pH and addition of another
benzene ring to the ligand molecule has been studied. The structures of
isolated solid metal complexes with QPP were investigated by infrared and
mass spectroscopy. The use of PPP and QPP as analytical reagents for
spectrophotometric determinations of copper and nickel is discussed.

Summary: The complexes Cu2L2.CH3COO, Mn2L2.CH3COO, Ni2L2 and Co2L2,
where L is 2-/(2-pyrrolylmethylene)amino/phenol (PYMAP), were synthesized
and characterized by IR, UV/VIS and MS spectrometry and by elemental
analysis. It has been found that PYMAP behaves as a tridentate dianion or
as bidentate monoanion and tridentate dianion at the same time, which
therefore forms various types of complexes. The Ni(II)- and Co(II)-PYMAP
behaves as a tridentate dianion or as bidentate monoanion and tridentate
dianion at the same time, which therefore forms various types of complexes.
The NI(II)- and Co(II)-PYMAP complexes form neutral chelates of M2L2 type,
while the Mn(II)- and Cu(II)-PYMAP complexes have the same M2L2
stoichiometry but with acetete in the inner coordination sphere.

Summary: Azo dyes belong to the largest group of marketed
colourants. Removal of dyes from effluents is the major environmental
problem because certain aromatic compounds carrying HSO3 groups resist
biodegradation or are incompletely degraded. In the present study microbial
removal of ayo dye Reactive Red 120 from aqueous solution was investigated.
Miyed bacterial culture previously aerobically grown in the presence of
this dye was used in static culture experiments. It was found that some
ecological factors affected dye decolourisation. The fastest dye removal
was obtained at 28C, pH 6.8 with 0.20 volume fraction of culture inoculum
and by addition 0.1 volume fraction of nutrient broth.

Summary: Spectrophotometric and electrochemical methods for
monitoring of pyrocatechol (PC) indoor air pollution have been
investigated. The efficiency of PC sampling collection was investigated at
tempertures (27 and 40C) in water. 0.1 M NaOH and 0.10 M HCl. The
reliability of the proposed methods was checked by monitoring of the indoor
PC polution in working premises were PC is released from metheorolčogical
charts during mapping or paper drying.

Summary: A first derivative spectrophotometric method using a
zero-crossing technique of measurement is described for the simultaneous
determination of zinc and nikel i mixtures. The procedure is based on the
reaction of zinc and nickel with 2-(2-pyridylmethyleneamino)phenol in
buffered 10% v/v methanol-water solutions at pH8. The determination of
nickel and zinc in mixtures in the concentration ranges 0.3-3.0 and 1.0-6.0
ug/mL, respectively, shows good linearity of the calibration graphs. The
proposed method was applied to the determination of nickel and zinc in a
real brontze sample. The main interferences present in copper alloy were
also examined.

Summary: The solutions properties of zirconium complex with the
Schiff's base 2-(2-pyridylmethyleneamino)phenol have been studied by
zero-order absorption spectrophotometry. The influence oh pH, stability of
the complexes with time and stability constants were investigated. The use
of fiirst derivativa spectrometry eleiminates the interference of chromium
and enables the simultaneous determination of zirconium and chromium
without previous separation. The relative overall standard errors, of five
independent simultaneous determinations of zirconium and chromium at the
1.0 ug/mL concentration level, were 2 and 4 % respectively. The proposed
method has been successfully applied to the analysis of some real samples
of zirconium/chromium bronzes.
