Summary: Laminates optimization based on the laminate maximum bendingcapability and mass ratio is very important for the reduction ofhull mass and hull construction expenses. The direct searchmethod was employed for the dimensioning and optimization oflaminates with even number and symmetric layers arrangement. As adesign variable, a resin-glass reinforcement mass ratio in thelaminate layer was chosen. The optimization for the laminatesproperties, the role of glass reinforcement in laminateoptimization processes and the possibility of choosing theoptimum laminate for a given bending moment are defined.

Summary: Both the classicaland the numerical analysis of polyester composite structure is based on the theory of elastsicity. This means that a laminate is approximated to Hooke s material, which is specified by the corresponding elasticity constants. The paper eyxamines the relations between the stiffness matrix coefficients of Hooke s generalized law and the engineering constants of Hooke s material (modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, and Poisson s ratios). Eachas laminate layer is considerred as orthotropic two-dimensional Hooke s material. The method of tensile testsing, suitaable for obtaining the elasticity properties of laminate layyers, is also discussed. The elasticity properties of a laminate are determined numerically, considering the laminate as a structure consisting of llayers.

Summary: Isotropic and orthotropic approaches are the two mosts commonly used approaches to the study of flexural properties of polymer composites. In photoacousticspectroscopy (PAS) the gas to be measured is irradiated byintermittent light of pre-selected wavelength. The gas moleculesabsorb some of the light energy and convert it into an acousticsignal which is detected by microphone. PAS is an inherently verystable method for detecting very small concentrations of gas inships condition.

Meeting: VI-th Congress of the IMAM
    Held: from 04/23/95 to 04/27/95
Summary: All the materials are subject to ageing in space and time depending upon the specific characteristics. The ageing is affected by the ambient agressiveness and corrosion processes. These effects may be defined for a major number of materials as an unintentional wear of the material due to physical, chemical, mechanical and biological ambient influence resulting in the change of the characteristics. The corrosion processes occur in exspressively aggresive environments, and with respect to the characteristics of observed materials, they bring to a parytial or complete decay of the product. The testings of the polymer materials and procedures of protection enables to obtain materials with new characteristics as for the resistance and dureability are concerned, and in such a way also to widen their application as new materialss. The paper reviews in particular hthe development of the Testing station for natural ageing and corrosion of materials in a site near Split.

    Gugić, Danko (181646)

    Proceedings title: IMAM 95
    Language: engleski
    Place: Dubrovnik
    Year: 1995
    Pages: from 788 to 797
Meeting: VI-th Congress of the IMAM
    Held: from 04/23/95 to 04/27/95
Summary: Glass reinforced polyester laminates are usually in structural analysis treated as Hooke s material defined by thickness and Youngs modulus of elasticity. Polyester resin is a bimodular material (it has different tensile and compressive modulus), and glass fibres can carry a larger load in tension than in compression, thus tensile and compressive modulus of laminates differ. Because of this, with bent loaded laminates (ship plating), flexural rigidity of laminates, which depends on tensile and compressive modulus of layers and on the position of layers in the cross section of a laminate, should be taken in consideration. For the determination of flexural rigidity of a laminate, it is necessery to find the position of the neutral level surface which does not pass through the cross section centre of the laminate. In this paper, a mathematical model of a laminate is given, and on its basis expressions for determing the position of the neutral level surface and flexural rigidity are derived. The influence of bimodulus layers on the flexural rigidity of laminates is analysed by a PC program. Theoretical and experimental values of the flexural rigidity of glass mast and roving reinforced laminates show excellent correlation. Since the presented theory gives smaller values for the flexural rigidity, bimodulus layers should be considered while dimensioning bent loaded laminates.

    Held: from 05/19/94 to 05/21/94
Summary: The increasing applications of polymers in shipbuilding give rise to a series of new technological issues and possibilities. However, in shipbuilding the severe criteria have been imposed to structural, installation and other materials regarding their properties, persistence etc. Therefore, the efficient education of personnel is needed to enable them to perform all installation and mounting of polymers according to the technical requirements. After considering the existing educational programmes for shipbuilding occupations it seems obvious that they are very insufficient and do not correspond to the requirements imposed by the increasing polymer applications.

    Held: from 05/19/94 to 05/21/94
Summary: All materials aare subject to aaging and corrosion in space and time depending on their specific properties. Aging and corrosion are affected by the environmental influences. Those processes for majority of materials can be defined as unintentionalwear of material caused by physical, chemical, mechanical an biologic impact from the environment, while for a small number of materials those influences does not affect the change of properties. Evaluation of aging is based on surveying the change of appearance chemical and physical properties which makes possible defining the degree of aging. Accurate predictinbg of durability of complex formulations which contain besides polymer, stabililzers, fillers, plasticisers, is difficult to determine without systematic testing of natural and accelerated asging. However, one of the basic problems is a corrlation between the resuzlts obtained by accelerated testings and those gained through natural aging.

Summary: This overview presents and discusses issues with numerous delemmas and difficulties arising in the course of the selection of reliable elastomeric materials for the production of structural parts and products in shipbuilding. The existing lack of materials and product standardization concerning the durability in service in marine environment may be partly compensated by considering and reasonaably using the novel findings obtained in outdoor terrestrial environmental ageing and in accelerated laboratory tests. The need for establishing the real marine environment polymer ageing experiments and simulating them appears as a required assignment of materials scientists in naval architecture and shipbuilding.

Summary: The problems connected with the discharge of oil, from the technological aspect, are not caused by oil releases throughout the year, but by releases of large quantities of oil within small areas in relatively short periods of time. These discharges are caused by accidents brought about mostly by weather conditions, human factors or faulty technical equipment. Frequent tanker accidents over the last years (Alaska, Morocco, Genoa Bay, Shetland Islands) which resulted in the escape of oil into the sea have caused ecologic catastrophies. Aas a consequence of this a series of constructional changes of tanker-vessels have been introduced, and new technological solutions for the cleaning-up of oil slicks on the sea surface have been developed. The paper deals with a technological solution for the prevention of the expansion of oil slicks by protective floating booms.

Summary: The toxic effects of exposure to fire effluents were probably observed by prehistoric man on the first attempt to move fire into a cave. The contribution of carbon monoxide to the toxicity of fire effluents has been recognized for more then a century. Fire can be a catastrophe for any ship, specially for a passenger ship. The analysis of fire on board Scandinavian Star, introduced many conclusions, which were included in the documents of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), thus promoting safety of human life at sea. Insulation of ship s cables during fire creates toxic gases and large quantities of cables in passenger ship public spaces impose special care to be taken.

Summary: The application of composite polymers to marine environment has brought adbout a number of prob lems as regards the choice of polymer materials with physical and chemical properties, important in sea-air conditions. Faster chips, demands for higher constructions to make transport of larger quantities of cargo possible, resistance to corrosion - these are the factors that have obliged the shipbuilders and scientific institutions to replace traditional materials (metals) with polymers. New materials are mosty of organic origin and subjec to structural changes resulting from chemical processes that occur withn macromolecules by asging. Some polymer material may produce dangerous gases in case of fire. Off all materrials polymers are most numerous, very important in shsipbuilding and in marine environment. Their application requires interdisciplinary approach in the study of all relevant fasctors for marine use, safety and ecological factors.
