Summary: Application of polymers in shipbuilding represents nowadays in the developed countries a new field of organized activity, from basic scientific to applicative investigations. This project has been started with the aim of investigation into the polymer applications in shipbuilding, offshore technology and underwater technology. This issue has been presented on many scientific meetings sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, Split, and the project itself has been financed by the Ministry of Technology, Science and Informatics. The aim of the work so far was the capabilities for elaboration of own programmes for the needs of shipbuilding and to offer the alternative materials to shipbuilding. During the three-years work on the project a number of scientific and professional papers, as well as studies, were published intended for professional employed in shipbuilding and plastics processing industry. The project covers a wide field of work as it is evident from the proposed aims of the research. Due to the great interest in the economy of Croatia many plastic industry companies took an active part in the elaboration of the project, such as: INA-Oil industry, R&D Dept.; Shipbuilding industry "Brodosplit"; Shipyard "Greben", Vela Luka; and the institution like Croatian Register of Shipping and Shipbuilding Institute, Zagreb. The Croatian Chamber of Commerce - Regional Chamber in Split, has been acting as a Sponsor by reason of importance of the issues dealt with in the project. The programme has been thus concieved to continuously deal with these issues, and each period of the time will be provided with a defined segment for which the technological solutions applicable in shipbuilding would be elaborated.

Research goals: OBJECTIVES AND RESULTS The objective of this project is to determine the possibility of application of polymers in shipbuilding and widely in marine industries. The application of polymers in marine industries gave rise to a series of problems with respect to selection of polymers having relevant physical and chemical properties important for sea-airconditions. Higher vessel speeds, needs for light constructions for the purpose of greater transport of goods, good corrosiveresistance - are the reasons which caused the increased application of polymers in shipbuilding. The majority of synthetic materials are of organic origin thus being liable to structural modifications of macromolecules resulting in changes of physical and chemical features of product. Fire-resistance properties should comply to the international SOLAS convention of IMO. The expected results of the project elaboration aim to: 1. Work-out the data bank of polymers having properties relevant for shipbuilding. Traditional shipbuilding still uses solutions based on various metal structures although the alternativ esolutions based on polymers axist nowdays. The aim of the information system is to direct a designer towards usage of such project alternatives and the plastic processing industry towards the development of production programmes neededin shipbuilding. 2. Substitute steel pipelines with thermoplastic and glass reinforced pipes in ship system according to the SOLAS reyuirements: - ballast piping or drinking water piping located in tanks which can be used for ballast water or drinking water only, - cooling fresh water piping branches located inside tanks (forbal last water and drinking water), - cooling sea-water piping system, - air piping sonnding pipes for tanks intended exclusively tobal last and drinking water systems, - piping for pneumatic and hydraulic systems inside control cabins, with some exceptions, - cargo oil washing-out piping in cargo tanks, - ballast piping in pump station inside remotely control ledsea-water valves, - liquid cargo piping through ballast tanks. 3. Overall tonnage reduction. 4. Improvement of anticorrosive system. 5. Substitution of lubricants with polymeric materials for launching operations. 6. Impact of polymeric material on human organism. 7. Research of natural aging of polymers aiming to corrections of the existing compositions and to work-out of new formulations of polymer mixtures for acquiring new products with improved physical and chemical properties.
