Summary: Atherosclerotic lesions localized especially in portions of arteries where abrupt changes in vessel geometry occur, such as bends bifurcations. Variations in the severity of atherosclersis in different individuals and in specific locations in the circulatory system of the same individual appear to arise from individual anatomic variations. An interplay between fluid dynamic and cellular surface properties in conjunction with physicochemical variables which are categorized as risk factors, produces atherosclerosis. In order to develop features of the risk profile, flow systemsm which simulate closely the pertinent anatomy and surface properties of the human vasculature were used in conjunction with test fluids which mimic the physicocemical properties of blood. Analysis of the flow regimes were made by a laser-Doppler-anemometer. Particle-particle, particle-vessel wall interactions were evaluated using a low shear viscometer. We started with a simplified Y-junction model made of glass and an elastic silicon rubber model. The flow was visualized with dyes and a birefringent solution using a photoelasticity apparatus. Regions of interest were then analyzed with a laser-Doppler- anemometer. The flow parameters, such as steady and pulsatile flow, influence of the elasticity, and non-Newtonian flow behavior were studied separately. In regions of low shear stress, the non-Newtonian flow and also the elasticity have a large influence on the flow behavior.

Summary: Models investigated in this study are elastic silikone rubber Y-shaped models. The radius of the entrance tube was 5 mm; of the two daughter tubes, 4mm. The material used for elastic models was two-component silicone rubber 601A and 601B made by Wacker-Chemie GmbH Munich. This material is known for its material constants which can be compared to the constant values of the carotid artery material in order to establish the speed rate and the law of flow power loss by means of the vessel deformation law. According to Liepsch et al (1992) it is possible to determine a relative change of volume of the silicone rubber material at a certain pressure in the elastic pipe whose thickness is 1 to 2 mm. The flow was visualized with dues and a birefringent solution using a photoelasticity apparatur. Regions of interest were then analyzed with a laser-Doppler-anemometer.

Summary: Blood vessels are extremely complex structure and understanding both its normal function and its pathology pose a number of challenging physicochemical problems. Experimental analysis of the pulsatile flow using viscous fluid through an elastic pipe in models of the arterial blood flow were made by Liepsch et al. (1985). In his work Ab‚ et al. (1978) presumes that the blood vessel material is composed of stronge fibres. It is analyzed as a transversal isotropic material with respect to radial direction. Besides the aforementioned considerations of the linear and nonlinear elasticity as model of the blood vessel material, very often this model is replaced by the linear viscoelastic one. Sato et al. (1985) studied nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour of blood wall using the Green-Rivlin finite viscoelastic theory (1957). Siekmann et al. (1980), Pedley (1984), Holenstein et al. (1984) considered material as biphasic continua, with elastic fibres surrounded in incompressible fluid phase. In this paper nonlinear mechanical behaviour of carotid artery wall is modelled allowing large elastic strains, with the supposition of material incompressibility. The nonlinear problem was solved by the incremental procedure, using the hybrid-stress finite element method. Numerical simulation of wave propagation through thin -walled elastic tube are described. The viscoelastic solution is obtained with the small deformation theory.

Summary: Blood vessel material is usually represented by the layers which offer a more reliable reproduction of its nonlinear behaviour including the geometric nonlinearity in the mathematical model, applying the large deformations theory. Micromechanic model of the structure has proved to be the chariest to accept as a model of mechanical repetition of a blood vessel. According to Caro et al. (1985) Young's elastine elasticity module is about 105 N/m2, while Young's collagen fibres elasticity module is 109 N/m2. This confirms the fact, that collagen fibres are less stretchable than elastine and that in cases of straining and inner pressure there is a change of the blood vessel tissue physical characteristics. Oddou et al. (1978), Siekmann et al. (1980), Pedley (1984) and Holenstein et al. (1984) considered material as biphasic continua, with elastic fibres surrounded in incompressible fluid phase. Summary: At blood vessel bifurcation there is either deposit formation, resulting in a reduction of the vessel diameter, or local widening resulting in blood coagulation. Both of these disturb the blood flow. On the other hand of the separation zone of bifurcation is conditioned by the vessel geometry streaming speed. Analysis of the flow regimes were made by a lasser-Doppler-anammomete.

Summary: Arteriosclerosis is one of the most frequent disease of blood vessels. The most outstanding consequences of the disease are a narrowing of blood vessels at branching points and bifurcations. To determine the causes of arteriosclerosis, it is necessary to be acquainted with hemodynamic layers, especially at branching points and bifurcations. The most important hemodinamic factors are: blood vessels geometry, pulsatile blood flow, blood vessel wall elasticity and non-Newtonian fluid. Component velocities have been measured using a single-component laser-Doppler-anemometer.

Summary: Flow parameters were studied in elastic rubber model, in a 30-Y-junction. Velocity components were carried out using a one component LDA system. Fluid have to be transparent, so that the beams of the of the laser were not reflected. Solution has a refraction index, n=1.41 in fact the same refraction index as the, silicon rubber wall of the model. The most important effects which are influences on flow behaviour are the geometry, the pulse form, wall elasticity and non-Newtonian behaviour of fluid.

Summary: Hemodynamic factors, such as change of velocity and pressure and transmision of the volume have a major role in atherosclerosis. It is assumed here that characteristics, wall elasticity and velocity influence flow formation in the elastic silicone model. This is achived by Reynolds number and the womersley parameter. We analyzed wave propagation in an elastic silicone model, knowing the stated parameters and material constants of the vessel.

Summary: The solution of fluid flow problems by finite element methods hasobtained increasing attention during receant years. The objective of this paper is to present some aspects of afluid-structore system. The fluid elements are employed inconjuction with structural elements both based on Lagrangian descriptions. The basic assumptions for liquid flow in pipelines are, that liquid is compressible and the pipe wallis extensible, but limited to an extent that liquid density and pipe diameter do not change morethat one percent. The method is used to described the transient flow in pipe. Thegeometry and loading are axisymetric, and system can be modeledusing the axisymetric elements. Variable isoparametric finite elementdiscretization are employed for fluid elements, than for solid elements. A finite element method combined with animplicit Euler method is used. To investigate the application of the finite elementmethod for solving pressure transient equations, a simple pipeline system is considered.

In this paper nonlinear mechanical behaviour of carotid artery wall is modelled allowing large elastic strains, with the supposition of material incompressibility. It has been established one the basis of the analysis carried out that the blood vessel material is extremely complex. We studied the blood vessel like a isotropic incompressible material using the theory of the large deformation, also we analyzed completly system blood vessel-blood with the fenomen of interaction.

Summary: Bendings and bifurcations, as the points of sudden blood vessel geometry changes, are the most common atherosclerotic lesions localisation sites. In order to determine the risk profile characteristics we have used models which correspond to the particular anatomy and characteristics of human blood circulatory system, as well as the experimental fluids which imitate physical and chemical characteristics of human blood. Flow regime was analysed by means of laser-Doppler-anemometer. Interactions between the tiny material particles with other such particles and of the same particles with the blood vessel wall were assessed by viscosimeter. The experiment started on a simplified silicone rubber Y-model. Studies of flow through the model were done for the following flow rate rations: Q2:Q1 = 0.5 and 0.7. Reynolds number Re = 250, 380, 500 and 1000. Flow was visualized by means of dying combined with the Tiedemann photoelastic device and by means of a birefringent solution. While the former can ony be used for continuous flows, the latter method is successfully applied on pulsatile flow. The whole length of the disturbed flow, starting from the disturbance onset point, flow separation to the creation of the secondary flow, is visualized. This method enables visualization of the whole flow field: it is a considerable improvement as regards other methods which offer information only on certain particles or flow portions. For a systematic insight, the observed events were videotaped.

Summary: The theory of human rest and motion, as well as the theory of motion of all living system, is mostly based an experiments. These experiments include measurements of the valuation of position, speed, acceleration, force momentum etc. during various forms of activities. By various forms of activities we primarily mean man's walk as the unique phenomenon of the propulsion of the body, various sports activities (running, jumping etc.) and the movements a man does in various jobs (such as riveting, writing etc.). The most complex movements of its single parts and joints. Man's skeleton can be considered as a group of one classed kinematic concatenations (the bead, the arms, the legs). According to the theses set forth about the construction of the side part of the spine (vertebrae, discs and the so called muscular and connective tissue), this work examines the extended model of the dynamic segment of the side part of the human spine. This model differs from others in having three vertebrae and two discs. Thus defined physical model is in the spine which, according to the known-adage acquired so far, constitutes fundamental data that have not yet been defined in such a way. Furthermore, this work examines translational and rotational shifts among, vertebrae but it deals only with the so called habitual ones, which take part in the motion of a healthy spine. The work studies also mechanical characteristics of the spine under stroke-loads at physiologically possible states.

Summary: Complex function of blood in human organism asks for as precise possible definition of rheological properties of blood as a continuum. By its composition blood is a multicomponent fluid with a dominant role of eritrocites. Rheologically, blood can be described as micropolar fluid. Blood cells as microelements ( biconcace discs ) are significantly influenced by local mikrodeformations. Separan, as a proper rheological approximation of blood, is used experimentally. Rheological parameters of the model liquid, using Couette rotation viscosimeter RV100, are defined in this paper. Representative viscosity of 8.72 mPas and density of 989 kg/m3 have been obtained through experimental data processing. Casson model of non-newton fluid has been used to define representative viscosity. Separan components significantly influence the level of viscosity. Shear stress of plastic flow has been obtained by non-linear regression betwen experimental data and the theoretical model. By comparing the elastic and viscoze components of viscosity betwen blood and separan, a significant shift of elastic components of complex viscosity has been observed, while viscose components are similar. Because of that, in model experiments the use of two-phase fluid, with a high particle concentracion, is recommended.

Summary: The theory of human rest and motion, as well as the theory of motion of all living system, is mostly based an experiments. These experiments include measurements of the valuation of position, speed, acceleration, force momentum etc. during various forms of activities. The extraordinarily complex construction of the spine and its links has numerous and various functions. This is the reason why in the last few decades a great number of researchers have made researches in order to examine geometrical relations among the spinal elements as a kinematic concatenation, the forces and the way they generate an the whole spine or on its single elements under static and dynamic or stroke-loads. In this work measurements have been made in order to establish the shifts of the joints of three vertebrae (dynamic segment) in the sagittal and frontal levels as well as the angle shifts around the neutral axis. Shifts at sagittal level (translational and rotational) are measured through the laser-smoothed metal plate-panel system. In order to describe the nature of human body vibration, and in it the vibration of the spine we have chosen the example of forced vibrations generated by the kinematic excitement of the base.
