Summary: This study was designed to investigate the effect of gestational diabetes on the content of lipids in decidua free placental tissue. It was realized by comparing fatty acid contents in placentae from normal term pregnancies with those from pregnancies complicated with gestational diabetes. All pregnancies were terminated by cesarean section. There was a highly significant increase in placental of palmitic acid, stearic acid and in total lipids in gestational diabetic patients. There was no significant difference between two groups in total linoleic and total arachidonic acid.

Title: Incoplete Adaptation of the Bony Birth Canal to the Needs of the Function of Delivering at Pre-Term Deliveries

Summary: The authors have beenresearching the curve of the lumbosacral bend at 285 healthy women in confinement immediately after delivery, who were divided in two groups: a group of 32 women who delivered after a pregnancy shorter than 37 weeks, and a group of 253 women who delivered after a full duration of pregnancy, i.e. after more than 37 weeks. The characteristic points on lateral roentgenograms of lumbosacral spine were analysed. A statistically significant difference has been found for the variable "promontorium angle" and the angle between terminal planes of vertebrae L5 and S1. Analysing other variables no significant differences have been established. Although the process of the adaptation of the bony birth canal is a long-lasting and slow one, definitive changes occur in the last three weeks of pregnancy. The need of full-term pregnancy is stressed to enable easier and more simple mechanism of delivery.

Summary: The authors have been researching the curve of the lumbosacral bend at 285 healthy women in confinement immediately after delivery, 26 pregnant women immediately before medically indicated abortion and 142 women outside pregnancy for a year or more. By measuring the characteristic points on lateral roentgenograms of lumbosacral spine it has been established that pregnancy and birth are rebuilding and accommodating i.e. straighteing the spine, the more the term is nearer, making delivery easier, compensating the changes of the L-S spine curve and birth canal conditioned by upright gait.

Title: Influence of Ritodrine on Placental Metabolism of Lipid in Preterm Deliveries

Summary: The goal of this study was to investigate the action of ritodrine hydrochlore on placental lipid metabolism in preterm deliveries. Eighteen placentas from preterm deliveries were analyzed. Group I consisted of ten preterm deliveries in vich iv ritodrine hydroclore had been administered. All patients recieved intravenous infusion of 150 mg ritodrine (Pre-par) in 500 ml of 5% glucose solution. Group II consisted of eight preterm deliveries in which no tocolysis had been administered. Ritodrine administration as tocolysis leads to elevation of placental lipid contents. At the same time, the concentrations of phospholipids and fatty acids increase.

Summary: Fetal grovth and development are dependent upon various growth factors such as glucose, insulin, HGH and IGF-I. These growth factors were measured in maternal serum (MS), amniotic fluid (AF) and umbilical vein serum (UV), in late gestation, in normal and IUGR pregnancies. The UV glucose values of 2.1+0.7 mmol/L and UV insulin values of 7.6+1.2 mU/L were lower in IUGR pregnancies than in normal pregnancies, and the difference was statistically significant for this two groups. There was not a significant difference in IGF-I concentrations when IUGR group was compared to the control. Infants from pregnancies complicated with IUGR had IGF-I low values of 0.6+1.2 micromol/l in AF.
