Summary: Short communication: At the University Hospital of
InfectiousDiseases, Zagreb,we have recently reviewed our cases of
asepticmenimgitis after measles, mumps, and rubella
vaccination.FromJanuary, 1988, to December, 1992, 50 cases of aseptic
meningitisoccurring 14-26 (median 20) days after vaccination were
recorded. The median age of our patients was 14.1 months (10 months to
6years). 36 (72%) were males; all were febrile, although themedian duration
of fever was only 4 days (2-9); 46 (92%) vomited;4 had bilateral parotitis;
and 7 (14%) had convulsions.Theincidence of vaccine-associated meningitis
in our study was 9 per10 000 doses.

Summary: The epidemiological characteristics and relationship
between respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) subgroup and virulence during an
outbreak of RSV infection occurring in Southeast Texas in the winter season
1991/92 are described. Fiftytwo infants and children were diagnosed with
RSV infection by rapid viral antigen detection and/or viral isolation.
Subgrouping of the isolates was carried out using 11-monoclonal antibodies.
Ten isolates were found to be subgroup B, and 8 isolates were subgroup A.
The subgroup B strains showed 3 different patterns of reaction with
monoclonal antibodies; one of these subgroups was examined further by
restriction analysis of parts of its nucleocapsid and attachment protein
genes. Both subtypes A and B circulated simultaneously in the same
territory. The more frequent occurrence of the B subgroup and the diversity
of its simultaneously circulated RSV strains have made this outbreak
unusual.

Summary: The study subjects were 477 children (216 boys, 261 girls)
with presumed pertussis. The control grup contained 247 (131 boys, 116
girls). The results of the study showed that 177 (37%) of the 477 patients
with clinical signs of a respiratory infection and paroxysmal cough had at
least 1 culture specimens positive for B. pertussis, and only 1 patient had
a B. parapertussis infection. Positive isolates were significantly more
common in patients in whom the material was collected up to the 14th day of
illness (144 of 357, 40.3%), than in patients in whom specimens were taken
more than 2 weeks after the onset of the illness. The vaccination status
was known for 435 patients with pertussis: 241 (50.5%) were not immunized.

Summary: Some epidemiological and clinical characteristics of
Pityriasis rosea Gilbert has led us to hypothesize that this disease may be
the clinical manifestation of an infection caused by legionellas. We have
thus tested the sera of 36 patients ill with Pityriasis rosea and 19
controls for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1-6 and Legionella micdadei
antibodies. Legionella micdadei antibodies were detected in 12 (33.3%)
Pityriasis rosea cases and in one (5.2%) control.
Keywords: antibodies, infective etiology, Legionella micdadei, Pityriasis rosea Gilbert

Summary: An analysis was made by the hemagglutination inhibition
method of 842 sheep and 125 goat sera for the presence of specific
antibodies for two strains of type A influenza virus of human origin-
variant A/Sichuan/2/87 subtype H3N2 and variant A/Taiwan/1/86 subtype H1N1
and for the strain of type B influenza virus of human origin-variant
B/Victoria/2/87. Specific antibodies were found for both variant of type A
in sheep (53.80% and 17.93%) and in goats (16.00% and 3.20%).No specific
antibodies for type B were observed in the examined sheep and goat sera.
This study draw attention to a possible role of sheep and goats in the
maintaenance and spred of human influenza, especialy for type A.
