Summary: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections are the most severerespiratory infections in infants. The virus was discovered 3oyears ago, but we still have had no available active protection nor specific therapy for this disease. RSV has two subtypes (Aand B). During the lifetime period reinfections with bothsubtypes occurre. The aims of this study are: 1. detection of RSVsubtypes causing outbreaks in winter seasons in Croatia, and 2.study of relation between severity of illness and isolated RSVsubtype. The research will last at least 3 consecutive years, which will allow us to study inpatients, aged 0 to 5 years, withthe signs of acute respiratory infections throuhgout 3 winterseasons.Etiological diagnosis will be done by the direct viralmethods i.e. isolation and rapid detection of RSV from clinical specimens.

Keywords: respiratory syncytial virus, respiratory infections, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, childhood infections, RSV subtypes, monoclonal antibodies

Research goals: The aims of this research are: 1. Detection od RSV from clinical specimens.RSV subtyping will be done using monoclonal antibodies. Our previous several years lasting study showed that onthe territory of Croatia different biological variations ofRSV strains were circulating (Pediatr pulmonol 1987, Vol.3). 2.Epidemiological picture of seasonal appearance of both RSVsubtype during at least 3 consecutive years. 3. Exploration ofrelation between the clinical syndroms and isolated RSV subtype.
