Summary: The system for viral meningitis differentiation, by usingpromptly accessible attributes, has been described. It is basedon attribute values, and logical principles on similarities anddiversities. The system is dynamic for its ability to make itselfpermanently adjusted by using new cases and their attributevalues. Through the possibility of prompt data processingaccording to a certain methodology, the system is able to takepart in medical decision making.

Summary: Decision trees have been constructed by using the modifiedQuinlan's approach, Assistant Professional software. Thevariability in results has been studied under varying learningconditions. Two data sets have been chosen for learningexperiments: from a study on rheumatoid arthritis, and from anepidemiological investigation of ageing. The results indicate thenecessity to determine inductive learning parameters in aspecific way for each problem, depending on problem complexity.

Summary: Estimates of needs for education of physicians in Croatia must be based on analysis of population health condition and age structure, on the country's economic capacities on which the employment of those specialists depends, and on estimates of realistic educational capacities of the Croatian medical schools. Basic analysis indicates that in the upcoming decade there are no possibilities of more extensive employment. So, it is necessary to educate only a certain number of physicians: those which will serve as replacement for deceased, retired or physicians leaving for other positions.

Summary: The method for defining strategy for thyroid function laboratory testing is presented in this study. In order to accomplish the task an available software, Assiostant Professional, was used. The strategy is generated by induction from routine data, using the method of minimizing entropy. Each of 1002 patients was described by 15 attributes and thyroid function status (euthyreosis, hyperthyreosis, hypothyreosis). Seventy per cent of the patients were chosen at random for generating and 30% for testing the strategy. The results is the decision tree or a set of decision rules. Absolute prognostic accuracy is estimated to 90% and relative to 90.16%.

    Held: from 11/24/94 to 11/26/94
Summary: The epidemiological domain consists of 2684 subjects examined in the period between 1970 and 1971, described by anamnestic and laboratory data, blood pressure and variables presenting living habits. The data on survival in 1990 (living or deceased) were used to make a predictive class. The method based on Quinlan's ID3 algorithm was applied. It uses Shannon's formula on information quantity needed for the subject classification. After 10 runs with different training/testing splits, 70% randomly chosen subjects for training set and 30% for test set, two different decision trees with the age as a root were obtained. The absolute predictive accuracy was 65.77% for the first decision tree, and 80.54% for the second one, while relative predictive accuracy was 60.56% for the first decision tree and 67.36% for the second one.

    Author: SONICKI ZDENKO
    Date of defense: 07/14/94
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 85
Summary: Two methodologies (adapted ID3 algorithm, neural network) have been applied to two domains (clinical and epidemiological), aiming to find out their applicability in real medical domains, and their good and bad sides. Result is that medical reality, having at least one contradictory example, is the problem for teaching the neural network. Taking into account empirical rules for teaching the neural network, results are (good but) consistently worse than those given by (adapted) ID3 algorithm. Regarding the domains, it was shown that less predictable domains to human are less predictable to both (adapted) ID3 and neural network.
