Summary: Analysis is presented of physical and chemical properties
ofcarbon/graphite, aramid, and polyolefin fibres, and the human
andenvironmental exposure levels. Mechanism of deposition, clearance,
translocation and biopersistance, and health effectsin animals and humans
are described. Data suggest low level ofoccupational and non-occupational
exposures with dermatitis beingthe most frequent health effect. However,
longterm exposure tokevlar fibres have caused lung fibrosis and cystic
keratinizingsquamous cell carcinomas in rats.

Summary: Health risk analyses have been performed of chrysotile, the
only asbestos variety which could possibly be maintained under defined
conditions. Emphasis is given to interactions between chrysotile and human
and animal tissues, levels of current exposures, and the use of biological
indicators. The relationships 'exposure-mortality' and 'exposure-morbidity'
in animals and humans are analysed, taking into consideration changes on
the bronchi, lung parenchyma and pleura, and fibrosis, carcinoma and
mesothelioma in particular. Cellular and tissue responses to chrysotile are
considered.
Keywords: chrysotile exposure, fibrosis, bronchial carcinoma, pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma, chrysotile health risk assessment

Summary: In view of contradictory evaluations of world scientists of
feasibility of further use of chrysotile as the only form of asbestos, a
detailed analysis of recent information is given. Data are presented on
physical and chemical properties, methods of identification and quantitative
analysis of fibres in air and tissues, sources of occupational and
environmental exposures, behaviour of fibres of chrysotile in air and
respiratory tract, and effects on animals and cells as well as effects on
humans. Results of quantitative risk assessments for human populations are
analyzed, but definitive conclusions could not be derived.

Summary: There was no difference between prevalence of any
respiratory symptom (chronic cough, chronic phlegm, chronic
bronchitis, dyspnea) in 53 female or 61 male family members of asbestos
workers and the matching members of the general population. No difference
was found between the measured and predicted values of FVC, FEV1 or FEF50
in nonsmoking or smoking men. In women, the measured values were
significantly lower. Airborne chrysotile concentrations in houses of
asbestos workers were found to be significantly higher than in homes of
general population.

Summary: In 15 workers exposed to mean formaldehyde concentration
0.21mg/m3 the prevalence of both conjunctivitis and pharyngitis was found
to be 100%, while in 25 workers at 0.08 mg/m3 the prevalence of
conjunctivitis was 100% and that of pharyngitis 48%. A significantly
increased prevalence of both diagnoses was found in subjects exposed to
formaldehyde compared to 48 controls in spite of the exposure of the former
to maximum one-third of TLV. This finding raises doubts as to the validity
of the currently employed TLV for formaldehyde.

Summary: The prevalences of chronic cough, chronic phlegm, chronic
bronchitis and dyspnea were significantly higher in 1127 asbestos workers
than in 593 controls, in nonsmokers and smokers. The prevalences increased
with cumulative exposure to total airborne particles and with length of
employment, but did not increase with cumulative exposure to airborne
asbestos fibres. The finding leads to the conclusion that the development
of chronic respiratory symptoms is not the consequence of the specific
influence of airborne fibres but rather of total particles.

Summary: In spite of a greater mean cumulative exposure to
asbestosfibres, with practically equal mean cumulative exposure to
totalparticles, the prevalences of chronic respiratory symptoms werenot
higher in 70 women compared to 98 men. Comparing thefrequencies of
examinees having ventilatory function parameterslower than 75% of the
normal values, the frequencies in womenwere not found to be higher.

Summary: Linear regression analyses were performed of the membrane
filter on the konimeter and thermal precipitator count
concentrations, resp., in asbestos textile manufacturing, asbestos cement
production, mining and milling. The slope coefficients of regressions
differed significantly on the basis of which it is concluded that no single
conversion factor can be used to reliably interconvert the count
concentrations obtained by different methods; a separate conversion factor
must be derived for each technological process.

Summary: The main unresolved issues are discussed. Average
chrysotile concentrations in buildings are low except where damaged friable
chrysotile is present. Risk estimates for general population are low
compared to many other environmental risks. Possible adverse effects of
paraoccupational exposures in domestic environments cannot be excluded. In
view of very shallow slopes in the exposure-response relationships for lung
cancer risk, exposure to airborne chrysotile-containing friction materials
is not likely to be a significant health risk.

Summary: There was no difference between the mean concentrations of
respirable mineral fibres measured before (0.0038 and 0.0031 f/cm3, resp.)
and about two months after the substitution (0.0039 and 0.0028 f/cm3,
resp.), suggesting that the substitution was unnecessary. However, the
concentrations measured two and eight days after the substitution were
significantly elevated (0.0095 and 0.0054 f/cm3, resp.), suggesting that
the unnecessary disturbance of the insulating material caused an increase
of exposure levels of inhabitants.

Summary: An overview of main health consequences is presented
emphasizingthe errors in the main current published quantitative
riskassessments. Mathematical proofs are given of the errors in the
estimated number of projected cancer cases in the risk assessmentof the US
EPA, and the errors due to disregarding of the role ofasbestos fibre type
and size. The proof is also given ofunacceptable variations in the risk
estimates due to conversionof units of asbestos concentration.

Summary: The chronology of asbestos-related diseases abroad and in
Croatia is presented. The results of a study of asbestos disease performed
among workers employed in a Croatian ship-repairing yard are discussed. The
presence of pleural thickening was observed in 9 out of 61 workers; in 6 of
those 9 patients pleural thickening was bilateral. The problems are
emphasized concerning the criteria for the assessment of working capacity.

Summary: Uncertainties included in the published current chrysotile
risk assessments are discussed. Particular attention is given to
differences in the values of slopes in published risk equations developed
for different industrial activities. Errors introduced into risk esttimates
thropugh unjustified exposure conversions are analysed. Threshold limit
values for chrysotile are calculated on the basis of some well-known risk
estimates and their practical unfeasibility are demonstrated
mathematically.
