Summary: The fluorescence of human teeth for which the phylogenetic
agewas estimated in the range of 42000 years, has been measured
byspectrofluorimeter at exication with 365 nm ultraviolet rays. Allrecorded
teeth, regardless of absolute age, exhibit thefluorescence within 400 to
500 n, wave-length. The maximumintensity was registered between 440 to 460
nm. The appearance
of the spectrum curve and the relative intensity of fluorescenceare an
individual characteristic of each tooth and do not dependupon sex, age,
tooth kind and phylogenetic age. The fluorescentsubstance within the tooth
crown remains preserved in the processof fossilization.

Summary: A rare case of an intracranially located supernumerary
tooth wasdescribed, observed over a period of 14 years, where movement
wasestablished laterally in relation to the referent Carthesiancoordinate
system, down and forward with rotation around theanteroposterior axis.
During skull growth, the skull base anglechanged by 20 degrees, but this
movement only affected the changein tooth position slightly. During the
observation period, nofurther changes in the neurological findings were
observed.

Summary: Mechanical stimulation evoked by Intermittent Compressive
Force(ICF) in a closed culture system has been shown to
stimulatecalcification of fetal bone tissue in presence of
serum, independently of the small increase in pO2 and pCO2 (18). Theauthors
have studied the effects of ICF on the sulphatemetabolism and DNA synthesis
in 17-day old mouse metatarsal bonerudiments under serum free conditions in
a short-term culturingperiod (24h). Exposure to ICF for 24 hours
significantlystimulates growth of calcified diaphyseal parts of the
rudiments, whereas the total length of the rudiments, as well as,
DNAsynthesis remains unchanged. This study shows that underserum-free
conditions, mechanical force by ICF stimulatesdaiphyseal calcification and
sulphate metabolism.

Summary: The study presents quantitative computed tomography (QCT)
as anoninvasive method for analyzing the inner bone structure.Randomly
selected mandibles were CT-scanned in five bone areas.Analyzing the
denzitometry curve in two horizontal levels therelation between the compact
and spongy bone and the total amountof bone substance were determined. The
smallest bone quantity wasfound in the area of the neck and angle of the
mandible, theareas of most frequent bone fractures. The alveolar part of
thebone, apart from the area of the angle, was considerably lessthick than
the base. The compact bone was predominant in allCT-scans.

Summary: An investigation was carried out by established
anthropometricalmeasurements on 64 native skull samples. In specially
constructedstraining frames, using the photoelasticimetric procedure,
weobserved the isocrome distribution at the moment of applicationof the
axial and excentrical strains simulating the forcesdeveloped by chewing and
their transport through trajectories ofstrain of the skull. Our
investigation has confirmed the earlierassumption that the upper jaw, which
together with the palatalbone makes up the hard palate, are in fact, the
central fulcrumof the transfer of forces occur by chewing in dental
extensionsof the upper jaw.

Summary: An 18-year-old man suffering from uremia was hospitalized
because of severe skeletal pain and multiple exostoses. The patient had
been treated for 5 years by regular hemodialysis: primary oxalosis was the
suspected cause of uremia. Transiliac bone biopsy and subsequent
histomorphometric analyisis of undecalcified bone specimen as well as
specific aluminum staining revealed a picture of oxalosis combined with
osteomalacia and a marked accumulation of aluminum at the front of
mineralization. This combination of histological features of oxalosis and
aluminum bone disease suggests a new type of mixed renal osteodystrophy.

Summary: The dose related effects of systemically administered
rhIGF-I and rhIGF-I/IGFBP-3 were monitored in the osteopenic rat skeleton
at three different sites with cancellous bone: distal femoral metaphysis,
epiphysis, and lumbar vertebral bodies. At the age of 16 weeks, rats were
bilaterally ovariectomized (OVX) or sham operated (sham) and 8 weeks later
divided into the control groups (sham OVX) and OVX groups treated with
different doses of rhIGF-I or rhIGF-I/IGFPB-3 for 8 weeks. Fluorescent bone
markers were given 9 and 2 days before necropsy. The highest trabecular
bone loss was measured in the metaphyses (40%), compared with 22% in the
lumbar vertebrae and 16% in the epiphyses. After 8 weeks of treatment with
7.5 mg/kg or rhIGF-I/IGFBP-3, bone formation rates were increased at all
sites measured. This experiment demonstrates site-specific differences in
cancellous bone reactions following ovariectomy. The data presented confirm
the potential of rhIGF-I(IGFBP-3 complex to promote the bone formation
process at various bone sites in osteoporotic rat skeleton.

Summary: Ovariectomy (OVX) and immobilization (IMM) in rats are
useful models of osteopenia, replicating some aspects of osteoporosis in
humans. The purpose of this study was to compare changes in cancellous bone
after OVX and/or IMM.The femurs were used to determine bone mineral content
(BMC) using single photon absorptiometry (SPA) and for scanning electron
microscopy (SEM). Tibias were collected for micorradiography, image
analysis and histomorphometry of metaphyseal cancellous bones. Cancellous
bone formation rates were generally greater in the OVX groups but less in
the IMM groups compared with controls. The results demonstrate differences
in the osteopenic changes that occur in cancellous bone following OVX or
IMM.
